Huawei cites momentum with optical transport

Huawei announced that its Super 200G optical transport solution has over 80 commercial deployments around the world.

At Huawei's Sixth Optical Network Innovation Forum this week in Nice, France, the company also announced the following:

  • Huawei has cooperated with operators in Asia and Europe to achieve Super C-Band innovation, increasing the effective spectral width by 50% compared with the traditional C band.
  • Huawei's new OXC all-optical cross-connect solution has been commercially deployed multiple operators to provide all-optical interconnection for hundreds of super core nodes/
  • Huawei's OSN 9800 M series and OSN 1800 series support the extension of OTN to the metro network. More than 60% of OTNs have been moved to COs in China, and that number exceeds 50% in Europe.
  • New smart O&M: Huawei has worked closely with 38 operators around the world to develop OTN premium private lines and help operators achieve revenue growth. 
  • Huawei, together with leading operators in China and Europe, is working on the introduction of AI into optical networks to predict faults on optical networks and better anticipate future network resource requirements, improving O&M efficiency and marking a critical step towards zero-touch optical networks.

Richard Jin said that "Looking to the future, the bandwidth potential of optical fibers is infinite. In a fully-connected 5G era, Huawei proposes to redefine the optical industry. Massive connectivity will promote the continuous expansion of optical networks."

Broadcom unveils 200G Ethernet Controller with 50G PAM-4 + PCIe 4.0

Broadcom introduced a 200G Ethernet controller with 50G PAM-4 and PCIe 4.0.

The new "Thor" device, which builds on Broadcom's widely-deployed NetXtreme E-Series architecture, combines a high-bandwidth Ethernet controller with a unique set of highly optimized hardware acceleration engines to enhance network performance and improve server efficiency. Broadcom is offering Thor dual-port 100G PCIe NICs and single-port 100G OCP 2.0 Mezzanine cards. Sampling is underway.

Brazil's Copel Telecom deploys Coriant's 200G transport

Copel Telecom, a regional telecom operator in Brazil and a subsidiary of the electric power utility company in the State of Paraná, has deployed 200G optical transmission technology from Coriant to scale its fiber backbone.

Copel Telecom uses Coriant's hiT 7300 DWDM platform to power its regional backbone, which supports residential Internet services covering more than 81 cities as well as corporate services offered in all 399 municipalities in Paraná. The recent upgrade uses Coriant CloudWave Optics technology to increase line-side transmission speeds to 200G per wavelength. In addition to increasing reach and spectral efficiency, the programmable interface solution enables Copel Telecom to reduce power, footprint, and cost as the network scales. Enhancements to the Coriant Transcend Chorus transport network management system enable simplified end-to-end service provisioning and advanced network control through software-defined programmability and automation.

Orange Spain has deployed a national optical transport network using Huawei's equipment.

The optical backbone offers up to 96x200G transmission capacity. The new network consolidates the traffic of several different DWDM systems that arose as the result of several mergers.

Ixia delivers 200/100/50GE test for its 400GE QSFP-DD system

Ixia, a division of Keysight Technologies, announced first shipment of a 400GE test system with multi-rate 200/100/50GE speed options for the K400 400GE QSFP-DD load module family.

These multi-rate speed options allow network equipment manufacturers to test products at speeds based on the new IEEE 802.3cd draft standard and IEEE 802.3bs standard using the 400GE QSFP-DD module at 200GE, 100GE, and 50GE speeds, from a single port.

Ixia said 56 Gbps technology is at the forefront of Ethernet speed evolution—moving from legacy 25GE, 50GE, and 100GE (based on 28Gbs technology) to the new 200GE, 100GE, and 50GE interfaces expected to come to market this year. The Ixia K400 QSFP-DD load module is the only shipping test solution that can validate these technologies using 400GE-port fan-out media for testing 400GE, 200GE, 100GE, or 50GE multi-speed or single-speed network devices.

“Flexible test solutions are necessary to develop higher speed, multi-rate, high-density Ethernet products for the leaders in the data center space,” said Sunil Kalidindi, vice president product management, at Keysight’s Ixia Solutions Group. “Network devices such as routers, switches and servers must be able to operate at all new speeds in the IEEE 802.3cd draft specification and IEEE 802.3bs on most, or all, ports on their devices.”

Sweden's Norrsken First to Deploy Infinera XTM II and 400G Flexponder

Norrsken, a Sweden-based regional operator, is the first to deploy the Infinera XTM II and the recently released 400G Flexponder. The carrier operates a regional network in Sweden providing Layer 1 wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) services and Layer 2 Ethernet services.

The equipment will be used for new 100 Gb/s services to leading internet service providers and carriers. Infinera said its XTM II platform and 400G Flexponder enable network operators like Norrsken to activate multiple 200 Gb/s wavelengths on a fiber, providing up to an eightfold density increase and a reduction in power per gigabit of 3.5 times over the previous generation of 100 Gb/s technology.

Infinera Intros XTM II for Cloud Scale Metro Packet-Optical

In June, Infinera introduced its next generation packet-optical platform for metro networks. The XTM II, which delivers Layer 0, Layer 1 and Layer 2 services, is optimized for bandwidth-intensive cloud scale applications at the metro edge, such as Remote PHY, 5G transport and data center interconnect (DCI). The new platform builds on Infinera's XTM Series, but now adds 200 gigabits per second (200G) per wavelength capabilities, with an eightfold density increase and a reduction in power per gigabit of 3.5 times. Power consumption is believed to be the lowest in the industry for 100/200G transport. It also features Infinera Instant Bandwidth, which is the company's open grid line system with SDN control. This gives network operators a highly flexible, open and software-programmable packet-optical solution for Layer 0, Layer 1 and Layer 2 services.

A key component of the XTM II platform is the new range of 200G per wavelength traffic units, featuring:
  • The 400G Flexponder: A dual, 200G muxponder that uses 16QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) for high-capacity transport, or a dual 100G transponder that uses quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) for longer reach operation. This device provides 400G of line and client capacity per slot, giving an eightfold density increase over the previous generation. Including optics, the device operates at as low as 20 watts per 100G service, which the company believes is the lowest power consumption per 100G available in the industry on any wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-based platform.
  • The 200G Muxponder: A 200G Layer 1 muxponder that supports a broad range of client signals, including 10G/40G/100G Ethernet and Optical Transport Network (OTN) as well as 8/16/32G Fibre Channel. The device can also be paired to create an OTN add-drop multiplexer (ADM).
  • The EMXP440 Packet-Optical Transport Switch: A high-capacity addition to the existing range of EMXP devices that provides Layer 2 packet-optical switching with dual 100/200G ports and 12 or 24 10G ports. The EMXP440 supports Carrier Ethernet (CE) and MPLS-TP, packet transport with sub-50 milliseconds protection, Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) CE 2.0 service creation and quality of service-aware traffic aggregation. In addition, the EMXP440 has feature-harmonization with the EMXP/IIe range and PT-Fabric.
Additional enhancements to the XTM Series include:


  • A new portfolio of XTM II upgraded chassis for improved power management and cooling and increased density to support nodes that require large volumes of new traffic units. 

  • Instant Bandwidth capability, enabling the on-demand licensing of 100G bandwidth increments to align capital expense spend with service revenue and to reduce operational expenses through automated software activation of new capacity.
  • New 400G+ per wavelength-ready flexible grid 4x and 9x ROADM modules and optimized hybrid erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)/Raman optical amplifiers to support sophisticated modulation formats and higher baud rates required above 100G. In addition, the new XTM II open flexible grid line system supports fiber capacity up to 24 terabits per second.
  • A unified solution providing end-to-end software control from core to access. The XTM Series, including the XTM II, is supported by Infinera’s Xceed Software Suite and DNA network management system. This new range of packet-optical platforms provides network operators with leading low power and high density at Layer 0, Layer 1 and Layer 2, and supports full interworking with the large installed base of XTM Series and the DTN-X platforms.

Ranovus Launches 200 Gbit/s CFP2 Direct Detect Transceiver

Ranovus, a provider of multi-terabit interconnect solutions for data centre and communications networks, announced the availability of a 200 Gbit/s CFP2 optical transceiver for data centre interconnect (DCI) applications.

The new CFP2 solution is designed to enable robust and cost-effective end-to-end scalable bandwidth connectivity for the DWDM metro network and cloud infrastructure markets where reach of 80 km and beyond is required.

The optical transceiver is based on Ranovus' technology including multi-wavelength quantum dot laser (QDL), ring resonator-based silicon photonic (SiP) modulators, driver ICs and receiver building blocks. The device also incorporates an advanced 56 Gbit/s PAM4 PHY solution with PAM4 codec and FEC capability to support a range of network applications. The 200 Gbit/s CFP2 optical transceiver is form factor-compatible with CFP2 DCO to allow the same shelf density for data centre interconnect systems.

Additional key features of the new CFP2 product include:

1. Support for DCI and metro access distances for 15, 40 and 80 km+ applications.

2. Supports 96 x DWDM channels in the C-band, plus L-band to be added in the future.

Coriant Announces Short Reach CFP2-ACO Pluggable for Groove Network Disaggregation Platform

Coriant introduced a Short Reach CFP2-ACO pluggable for its Groove G30 Network Disaggregation Platform (NDP). The Groove Short Reach CFP2-ACO pluggable, which uses silicon photonics from Elenion Technologies, enables cost-optimized, power-efficient 200G connectivity for carrier transport and Data Center Interconnect (DCI) applications.

Coriant said its Short Reach CFP2-ACO represents a new class of analog coherent devices purpose-built for surging data traffic growth. Compared to PAM-4, the Short Reach CFP2-ACO preserves the operational and network engineering simplicity of coherent transmission while significantly lowering the cost and power for short reach interconnect applications. In combination with the Coriant Groove G30 Muxponder solution, the Short Reach CFP2-ACO helps support delivery of very high-capacity, low power, and cost-optimized connectivity for all applications requiring 10G, 40G, and 100G service aggregation and 200G DWDM transport. MaxLinear Launches 32 Gbaud Linear Coherent TIA for 200G

MaxLinear, a major supplier of RF and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband, the connected home, data centre, metro and long-haul fibre networks and wireless infrastructure, has introduced the
MxL9105 dual-channel linear coherent transimpedance amplifier (TIA) targeting 100/200 Gbit/s DWDM coherent transmission systems.

Delivering characteristics including low input referred noise density, total harmonic distortion (THD), power dissipation and channel crosstalk with high channel bandwidth, the new MxL9105 device is designed to meet the performance requirements of next-generation intradyne coherent receiver (ICR) designs for long-haul and metro network applications.

MaxLinear's MxL9105, which is now sampling, is a dual-channel TIA supporting a per-channel data rate of 32 Gbaud, while programmable channel bandwidth capability allows receiver sensitivity to be optimised with photo detectors (PDs) from a range of manufacturers. In addition, low input referred noise density and low power consumption make the solution suitable for a range of 32 Gbaud ICR module designs, including type 1 and 2 and the latest micro-ICR modules.

The MxL9105 also supports low differential output swings required for next-generation low-power coherent DSPs, while high transimpedance gain makes it suitable for metro network applications where high signal loss may be experienced due to the prevalence of older fibre and multiple interconnects.

The pin-out assignment and functionality provided by the MxL9105 are compatible with legacy 32 Gbaud coherent TIAs to help reduce the need for re-design and re-qualification by customers.

Offering support for DP-QPSK/BPSK coherent designs for ultra-long-haul applications, the device provides a per-channel data rate of 32 Gbaud with low jitter and low power dissipation.

Spark New Zealand Installs 200G Wavelength with Nokia PSS 1830

Spark, New Zealand's leading communications service provider, has deployed the country's first 200G per wavelength production fiber link using Nokia's PSS1830 Optical Transport Network (OTN).

Spark's new 200Gbps network link connects its core network with the global gateway, and enables the service provider stay ahead of the data demand curve for both residential and enterprise customers.

Nokia said it has now shipped its 200G solution to more than 88 customers worldwide.

"Like many operators, Spark has faced relentless growth in bandwidth demand, largely driven by an increase in video streaming by business and consumer users. By taking a flexible approach to this challenge with New Zealand's first 200Gbps fiber link, together with Nokia, Spark is well placed to meet continued demand growth while meeting existing user expectations," stated Ray Owen, head of Oceania at Nokia.

NTT Electronics Adds 200G DSP for DWDM

NTT Electronics (NEL) announced has begun sampling a 20nm 200G High Performance DSP for use in metro, regional and long haul DWDM systems.

The new 200G High Performance DSP (NLD0660) improves OSNR performance with a brand-new DSP core whose Soft-Decision Forward-Error-Correction (SD-FEC) achieves 12dB Net-Coding-Gain (NCG), allowing either less optical repeaters or longer fiber reach between optical transceivers. It supports a variety of Dual Polarization (DP) modulation formats, 16QAM, 8QAM, and QPSK. 200 Gb/s DP 16QAM doubles Metro Access (MA) link capacity, 150 Gbps DP 8QAM upgrades Metro Regional’s (MR’s) capacity, whereas 100 Gbps DP QPSK expands Long Haul (LH) reach through OSNR improvement. If configured with two DSP chips for Nyquist super-channel dual-carrier solution, then dense WDM transmission of 400 Gbps, 300 Gbps, and 200 Gbps all per 100 GHz spacing or denser are made possible in MA, MR, and LH fiber links respectively.

This is the second 20nm CMOS coherent DSP in NEL’s lineup which is enabled by its ongoing collaboration with Broadcom.

Alcatel-Lucent Ships 100G/200G Single Carrier Line Card

Alcatel-Lucent announced commercial delivery of a single-carrier 100G/200G DWDM optical line card for its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform. This allows operators to transmit data over distances as great as 4,000 km in 100G mode and as far as 1,000 km in 200G mode.

The 200G solution initially allows for the doubling of fiber capacity from 8.8 Tbps (88 x 100G) to 17.6 Tbps (88 x 200G). Alcatel-Lucent’s flexible grid feature delivers a total system capacity of 24 Tbps.  The solution is backward compatible with previous generations of Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G DWDM solution.

The 100G/200G single carrier line card has already been deployed into 20 service providers networks.

The Japan-U.S. Cable Tests 200G Undersea Transmission with Ciena

The Japan-U.S. Cable Network completed a 200G trial over a segment of its network on the U.S. West Coast.  The trial employed Ciena’s submarine solution and 16QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) using the company's 6500 Packet Optical platform and WaveLogic coherent optical technology. The trial was successfully conducted earlier this year on a 630 km submarine segment in California, and builds on the successful deployment in 2013 of Ciena’s 100G submarine solutions across the Japan-U.S. Cable Network.

Ciena said the trial demonstrates how 16QAM technology can be leveraged to double the number of bits per wavelength to support twice the amount of data compared to standard 100G technology.

“The Japan-U.S. Cable Network is a critical source of capacity for our consortium members. The goal of this trial was to ensure that the cable’s various segments can be equipped with appropriate future-proof technologies to scale network capacity in a cost-effective manner, as needed to meet rapidly increasing demand for bandwidth. This collaboration with Ciena is helping the network prepare for cost-effective growth.”
