CommScope's new DAA aggregator, Soft EDD, DOCSIS timing protocol

CommScope announced three technology breakthroughs that improve performance at the core, throughout the access layer, and at the edge:


  • DAA Aggregator – This massively scalable new architecture extends fiber deeper into the network, lowers total cost of ownership, and requires relatively minor changes to existing fiber deep networks. The change significantly increases the number of homes passed per RPD serving group – from 20 to 40 to between 150 to 300 – enabling deeper reach into neighborhoods and a simplified path to network upgrades.
  • Extended Soft FDD – This new combination of software-only Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Extended Spectrum DOCSIS (ESD) – pushes network interface speeds beyond 1.2 GHz and is already being hailed as a preliminary flavor of DOCSIS 4.0. The advance comes just four months after the company first demonstrated soft FDD.
  • A new DOCSIS timing protocol – Precise timing distribution over the DOCSIS network is now possible. Such precision is imperative for time-critical processing and applications, where a fraction of a second means the difference between success and failure. Current and future applications include mobile backhaul, virtual reality, and autonomous vehicle control.

All will become elements of the company’s Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) and 10G portfolios.

CommScope will discuss and demonstrate the new technologies at the SCTE•ISBE Cable-Tec Expo beginning September 30th in New Orleans.

There will be significant changes to architectures over time, and it’s important to work with a company that has both industry-leading technology and the expertise to execute at any point in that transformation.”

CommScope Advances 10G Broadband Roadmap

CommScope announced several areas of progress on its 10G Broadband roadmap
  • A low-latency DOCSIS system deemed crucial to next-generation broadband performance. The company is demonstrating IP video running alongside traditional QAM video over an EPON channel at 10 Gbps. 
  • A software-configurable Frequency-Division Duplex (Soft FDD) system with the potential to deliver 10G speeds over traditional coaxial wiring. Soft FDD uses FDX technology and provides a foundation for symmetrical services.
  • The E6000 vCore fully virtualized converged cable access platform (CCAP) core. This offers automated provisioning and capacity tools for end-to-end service provisioning and smart capacity additions; and orchestration and intelligence tools to manage multi-access configurations and produce better analytics about network performance.
CommScope notes that these announcements come fewer than six months after it revealed its role in pioneering the core technologies for 10 Gbps broadband (10G), and just four months after it announced a 8.5 Gbps network trial with Virgin Media.

In addition, Vodafone Germany is underway with a nationwide upgrade to support 1Gbps service. Some 12 million customers will enjoy the high-speed Gigabit service through an ARRIS broadband device when the rollout is complete. Swiss provider Sasag last month became the first European operator to announce upgrading its entire network to use DOCSIS 3.1 (D3.1) for both the upstream and downstream channels.
CommScope completed its acquisition of ARRIS International in April.

Huawei: Ecosystem backs 5th Gen Fixed Network based on 10G PON

At last week's MWC Shanghai, industry partners launched "The 5th Generation Fixed Network: A Gigabit Future Is Now" initiative based on 10G PON technology. 

Partners include the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), Broadband Development Alliance, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Ovum, China UHD Video Industry Alliance, China Telecom, China Unicom, and Huawei.

In his keynote speech at the forum, Ao Li, Director of the Technology and Standards Research Institute of CAICT and Deputy Secretary General of the Broadband Development Alliance, said: "From the perspective of the fixed network development history, we have witnessed the narrowband era (64 Kbps) represented by the PSTN/ISDN technology, broadband era (10 Mbps) represented by the ADSL technology, ultra-broadband era (30–200 Mbps) represented by the VDSL technology, and megabit era (100–500 Mbps) represented by the GPON/EPON technology. Now we are entering the 5th generation, gigabit broadband era featuring the 10G PON technology."

Lumos lights up 10G PON in rural Virginia with ADTRAN

Lumos Networks is deploying ADTRAN's 10G fiber access portfolio to deliver network-wide 10Gbps or 10G fiber services for small business customers in rural Virginia.

Lumos Networks, which has been an ADTRAN customer for nearly a decade, is using the ADTRAN Total Access 5000 fiber broadband platform as the cornerstone of its access network. The carrier is now using the ADTRAN software-defined access (SD-Access) architecture.

“The number of applications that require more robust broadband services continues to grow for both residential and small business customers, especially with emerging technologies accelerating network demands,” said Lumos Networks SVP and General Manager Diego Anderson. “Our partnership with ADTRAN positions us to create reliable connections with our customers while delivering a level of distinguishing service and support over a fiber-based infrastructure. Intel intros 10G PON chipset for FTTx and 5G base stations

Intel introduced a new multimode 10G PON chipset designed for small form-factor pluggable optical network termination (SFP+ ONU) and single family unit (SFU) ONUs.

In a blog post, Intel's Dirk Wieberneit writes that SFP+ ONU plays a crucial role in fiber deployments by providing entire ONU (Mac and PHY) connectivity between the 10G PON optical network and any unit it is plugged into, such as residential gateways, MDUs, DPUs, mobile small cells and base-station equipment. This positions the new chipset for a wide range of implementations in both residential and business environments, including SFU, SFP+ ONU, fiber to the distribution point (FTTdp)/multi-dwelling unit (MDU), and 5G base stations, while enabling service providers to reuse their existing fiber infrastructure.

A key feature is an embedded 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) PHY, which supports low-power, cost-effective SFUs, providing fast speeds both into and throughout the home.

Other features of the chipset:

  • It can be used in both ITU and IEEE PON environments (EPON, 10G-EPON, GPON, XGPON1, XGS-PON, NG-PON2 and active optical Ethernet.)  
  • It is prepared for bidirectional optical subassemblies (BOSA), allowing cost-effective BOSA on board (BoB) ONU designs. 
  • It supports network timing synchronization protocols, such as IEEE 1588v2, synchronous Ethernet or time of day (ToD), providing clock accuracy for 5G/LTE mobile base stations.
  • It offers embedded VoIP supporting FXS voice ports. 
  • It delivers the necessary quality of service (QoS) and power management, carrier-grade features and hardware OAM, including Y1731, with the highest accuracy.  
  • It includes a dual-core, multithread processor and dedicated packet processing engine so you get both service application flexibility and benchmark performance.

MACOM's 10G PON chipset leverages its manufacturing efficiencies

MACOM Technology Solutions introduced its portfolio of 10G passive optical network (PON) devices for optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network unit (ONU) infrastructure.

MACOM said its new 10G PON portfolio enables seamless component integration and unrivaled cost efficiencies to help accelerate 10G PON infrastructure build-outs. Its solution portfolio combines the inherent performance and supply scalability advantages of electro-optic modulated lasers (EOMLs), complemented by its pre-qualified, interoperable APDs, TIAs, laser drivers, and CDRs. The company also cites its L-PICTM technology platform and patented Etched Facet Technology as an advantage for high-volume, low-cost laser manufacturing. The aim is to replicate the cost structure reductions that MACOM previously achieved in 2.5G PON.

Chattanooga Offers 10G Residential Service for $299 a Month

EPB, the municipal utility of the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee, has launched the first 10G residential Internet service across a large community-wide territory.

EPB’s 10 Gig service, which is now available for access by every home and business in a 600 square mile area, uses Alcatel-Lucent’s TWDM-PON broadband technology. The service is priced at $299 per month. EPB is also launching 5 Gig and 10 Gig Internet products for small businesses as well as a 3 Gig, 5 Gig and 10 Gig “Professional” products for larger enterprises. These Internet services are available at varying price points.

“Five years ago, Chattanooga and Hamilton County became the first in the United States to offer up to 1 Gig Internet speeds,” said Harold DePriest, president and CEO of EPB. “Today, we become the first community in the world capable of delivering up to 10 Gigs to all 170,000 households and businesses in our service area.”

Aquantia Raises $37 Million for 10GBASE-T and 5GbE Silicon

Aquantia, a start-up based in San Jose, California, announced $37 million in Series H funding for its 10GBASE-T Ethernet silicon solutions for data centers.

Aquantia's 10GBASE-T and AQrate PHY product lines lead the market with low-power, high-performance, and high-density silicon solutions.  Aquantia developed AQrate, a unique technology capable of increasing network speeds to 5 Gbps at lengths up to 100m on existing Cat 5e/Cat 6 cables. The products were first sampled in late 2013 and are currently in mass production. The company currently employs over 160 people. Since its first round of funding in 2005, Aquantia has become a market leader in high-speed Ethernet copper connectivity solutions in data center and enterprise.

New investors participating in this round include Credit Suisse's Direct Equity Partners, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, and Walden Riverwood along with existing investor Cisco Investments. Previous investors include Intel Capital, Cisco Investments, Xilinx, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, and Venture Tech Alliance. Aquantia has raised a total of $199 million to date.

Verizon Completes 10G FTTP Trial Using NG-PON2

Verizon has completed a test of a 10 Gbps technology on its fiber-to-the-premises network.

Field testing of the NG-PON2 technology was completed recently from Verizon’s central office in Framingham, Mass., to a FiOS customer’s home 3 miles away as well as to a nearby business location. This followed extensive testing in Verizon’s laboratories in Waltham, Mass.

A new optical line terminal (OLT) installed in the Verizon central office generated four wavelengths, each capable of operating at 10G/2.5G. Later versions are envisioned to support the same download and upload speeds of 10G/10G per color. One test transmitted the NG-PON2 signals over a fiber serving live GPON customers proving that the network can simultaneously deliver GPON and NG-PON2 on the same fiber. The trial was conducted with a NG-PON2 equipment system from Cisco and PT Inovação.  The technology will have the system capacity to grow to 40-80 Gbps as the market demands.

Verizon said upgrades on its FTTP network will begin when commercial equipment is available to support business services such as switched Ethernet services. The company plans to issue a request for proposals later this year for the purchase of hardware and software for the new NG-PON2 platform.

“The advantage of our FiOS network is that it can be upgraded easily by adding electronics onto the fiber network that is already in place," said Lee Hicks, vice president of network technology for Verizon. "Deploying this exciting new technology sets a new standard for the broadband industry and further validates our strategic choice of fiber-to-the-premises.”

San Francisco Public Library Gets 10G Internet Connection

San Francisco Public Library (SFPL), the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC), and the City and County of San Francisco announced today that they have collaborated to provide unprecedented direct connection at 10 Gbps access speed to CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN) and from there to the world.

SFPL accesses city-owned fiber that is used to connect them to CalREN. SFPL has a direct 10 Gigabit connection to their main library. Seven branches now connect to the main branch at 1 Gigabit, with plans to connect all 27 branch libraries at this speed using city-owned fiber. From CalREN, San Francisco’s libraries are connected to California’s K-12 and higher education systems, to research and education networks throughout the world, and to the public Internet.

Singtel Plans 10G Residential Service

Singtel will be soon be deploying Next Generation GPON on its Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network. A pilot service will begin in the next quarter and Singtel plans to make the service available to all fibre customers in the later part of the year.

The technology will give customers the option of a 10 Gbps fibre broadband service, useful for applications such as running multiple 4K video sessions. The maximum bandwidth currently available to customers is 1Gbps on Singtel’s Unlimited Fibre plan.

“Over 70 per cent of our customers are on fibre. We believe in constantly innovating and looking for ways to bring them better speeds using the newest technologies,” said Mr Tay Soo Meng, Chief Technology Officer. “Most of these households already have multiple devices connected to their home network. The adoption of this technology will help us meet demand as the number of applications increase and become even more bandwidth intensive.”

Crehan Research: 10 Gigabit Server Networking Market Surges

Following some recent softness, the 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) server networking market delivered impressive results in 1Q14, according to the latest server-class adapter & LOM/controller report from Crehan Research.The strong showing was even more noteworthy given that servers based on Intel's next-generation Grantley platform have not yet hit the market.

"New server micro-architecture platforms, such as Grantley, tend to drive a positive step-function in demand for higher networking speeds," said Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research. "The increased processor performance puts greater demands on the network in conjunction with driving a server-upgrade purchase cycle," he explained. "Such stellar results in the seasonally-soft first calendar quarter, even prior to the arrival of Grantley-based servers, are positive indicators for the market's future growth."

Besides the overall strong growth, the report points to other positive milestones in the server networking market during the quarter, including:

  • Record 10GbE shipments which surpassed a 10-million-port annual run rate
  • 10GBASE-T shipments exceeded a one-million-port annual run rate
  • One vendor – Intel – shipped over a million 10GbE ports during the quarter
  • 40GbE shipments surpassed a 50-thousand-port annual run rate

Last quarter, Crehan Research reported that 10GbE data center switch shipments surpassed those of 1GbE to become a majority of total data center switch shipments. Many of those ports are deployed as uplink, aggregation and core networking connections. Crehan Research now reports that this technology is starting to migrate to direct server access in much greater volumes.

Vitesse Extends its 10GE PHY Portfolio

Vitesse Semiconductor introduced the latest generation of its widely adopted 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) PHY portfolio, the VSC8489 physical layer transceiver family.

The new devices offer a low cost, flexible LAN/WAN solution with multiple interface options for KR backplane and SR/LR/ER/ZR/220MMF optical module applications. The VSC8489 family also has the industry’s smallest footprint in its feature class, consuming 22% less area than the competition. Target applications include enterprise data centers supporting cloud services.

Vitesse said its new VSC8489 family includes two products with VeriTime, the industry’s de facto highest accuracy IEEE 1588v2 timing synchronization technology, as well as one without VeriTime for cost-sensitive applications that are not timing-critical. The VSC8489 family allows customers to choose the right 10GE PHY for their needs now, with a seamless and pin-compatible upgrade path to advanced timing and security features if, or when, they are required in the future.

“Demand for greater bandwidth and more feature-rich solutions at the physical layer is evident everywhere, from the Enterprise to service providers, as 10G technologies become increasingly more cost effective,” said Richard Interrante, product marketing director at Vitesse. “The VSC8489 family gives OEMs an efficient way to upgrade networks transitioning to cloud and other virtualized environments.”

Intel Looks for Market Ramp of Thunderbolt 2 this Year

Intel announced Thunderbolt Networking, a new way to connect two computers directly together using a standard Thunderbolt cable to achieve 10 Gbps throughput.  Thunderbolt Networking, which is already released on the Mac with OS X Mavericks, will soon be available to connect two PCs together or a PC to a Mac.

Intel said Thunderbolt Network will prove to be especially valuable for handling 4K video production workflows or for backing up large data sets between computers, which should lead to "a strong ramp of Thunderbolt 2 in the market this year." A demo at this week's NAB conference in Las Vegas features HP’s Z Workstation and Apple's Mac Pro.

Frontier Adds 10G Optical Transport Service in 25 States

Frontier Communications launched a an Optical Transport Service in its markets in 25 state, offering point-to-point, transparent fiber paths.

Frontier's Optical Transport Service's point-to-point dedicated wavelength uses a shared infrastructure with protocol support and protection configurations. The 10 gigabit service in now available within Frontier's exchanges in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Crehan: Data Center Ethernet Switch Market Posts Record Results

The data center Ethernet switch market posted record revenue and shipment results in 2Q13, according to the most recent Data Center Switch Report from Crehan Research.  The data center market's overall growth was propelled by 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) price declines.

As shown in the accompanying figure, 10GbE pricing within the fixed/top-of-rack switch segment – which accounts for a majority of overall data center switch shipments – is now almost at three times that of 1GbE.

"Offering ten times the bandwidth for only three times the price of 1GbE is a key threshold for 10GbE data center Ethernet switch adoption,” said Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research. "This type of pricing  should  finally  drive mainstream 10GbE data center switch adoption."

Last month, Crehan reported that 10GbE adoption within servers also returned to strong growth in the second quarter of 2013, with shipments and revenues posting double-digit increases.

In line with a strong quarter for data center networking investment, Fibre Channel Switching also enjoyed a sequential increase, albeit much more modest than that of the data center Ethernet switch market. Cisco had a particularly strong quarter, with its recently introduced flagship MDS 9700 Director switch driving close to a 40% increase in its overall Fibre Channel switch revenues.

NTT Develops 10G LEAP Laser with 90% Power Reduction

Researchers at NTT have developed a Lambda-sacle Embedded Active Photonic-crystal (LEAP) Laser that enables 10 Gbps communications while using only 10% of the power of conventional lasers.  NTT believes the technology could be used for optical cross-connects between microprocessors, yielding significant reduction in power consumption and heat.

NTT Laboratories have been developing the LEAP laser to create the world’s first continuum wave operation of a current-injection photonic crystal laser with the threshold current of 390 microamperes at room temperature (20°C-30°C).  NTT Laboratories are aiming to market this laser in about 2016.

Huawei Updates its SingleFAN Access Platform for 10G PON, Copper Vectoring


Huawei announced its new generation multi-mode & dual-core MxU with support for PON/10G-PON multi-mode uplink and Vectoring downlinks over copper access at up to 100 Mbps.  Huawei's MxU is the key processing module in its SingleFAN solution, which is the company's unified platform for PON, P2P, DSL, coax, E1, and other network access infrastructure.

The upgraded MxU now leverages dual-core CPUs to improves processing speed and enable better system reliability, as timely protection switching will occur when a CPU subsystem is faulty.  Huawei's new MxU also features dual-BIOS technology, enabling automatic restoration should an error occur because of an upgrade failure or similar fault.  The MxU adopts an intelligent architecture that integrates path protection, remote monitoring, web-based management, VPN functions, and hardware support for Y.1731. This simplifies network performance monitoring and better caters to the needs of various service scenarios. The MxU also supports intelligent fault detection over PONs and real-time fault detection for voice services, shortening troubleshooting time.
