Analog Devices debuts Single-pair Power over Ethernet at 1 km

Analog Devices introduced the first Single-pair Power over Ethernet (SPoE) Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Power Device (PD) chipsets.

Potential SPoE applications include smart buildings, factory automation, and other applications at the edge of traditional networks. 

Analog Devices’ new SPoE solutions, LTC4296-1 and LTC9111, reduce reliance on localized power and batteries by using a single twisted pair of Ethernet cables to provide efficient, reliable, easily installed power at reduced size and weight. The company says the solution an reliably transfer both power and data over one kilometer in industrial Ethernet applications.

Analog Devices’ new LTC4296-1 5-port SPoE PSE with Classification and LTC9111 SPoE PD with Polarity Correction products support both SPoE and Power over Data Line (PoDL) variants of single-pair powering. SPoE augments Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) to provide more reliable, fault-tolerant, and interoperable point-to-point power solutions, delivering up to 52W. Both products are 802.3cg compliant and support Serial Communication Classification Protocol (SCCP).

NTT Electronics spins out fJscaler to focus on ICs for coherent optics

NTT Electronics has established a majority-owned subsidiary called fJscaler to focus on differentiated electronics integrated circuits (ICs) that powers its 100G+ coherent DSP product portfolio. 

fJscaler, a new majority owned subsidiary of NTT Electronics, is a fabless semiconductor group designing high-speed, high-performance ICs for coherent optics, as well as several related interconnects in the optical communications market needing PAM4, Direct Detect and other modulation schemes. The company's mission is "to scale femto-Joule optical communication with digitally assisted analog signal processing preserving low latency of fiber optics interconnects."

fJscaler is based in Beaverton, Oregon.

The new subsidiary brings a rich talent pool and history of delivering critical components at that PHY layer. fJscaler will continue mass production of its linear driver and TIA for 100-400G ZR/ZR+ applications, and will immediately begin executing a roadmap to service the next generation of coherent optics as well as many other growth markets for coherent optical communications.

Cisco posts quarterly sales of $13.6B, up 6% yoy

Citing an “easing supply situation,” Cisco reported first quarter revenue of $13.6 billion, up 6% year-over-year, net income (GAAP) of $2.7 billion or $0.65 per share, and non-GAAP net income of $3.5 billion or $0.86 per share.

“Our fiscal 2023 is off to a good start as we delivered the largest quarterly revenue and second highest quarterly non-GAAP earnings per share in our history,” said Chuck Robbins, chair and CEO of Cisco. “These results demonstrate the relevance of our strategy, our differentiated innovation, and our unique position to help our customers become more resilient.”

“We delivered strong results in Q1 and continued to make progress on our business transformation,” said Scott Herren, CFO of Cisco. “Our annualized recurring revenue increased to more than $23 billion, with product ARR growing 12%. This, together with our significant backlog, strong RPO, and easing supply situation, provides us with great visibility and predictability, and supports our increased full year guidance.”

  • On a non-GAAP basis, total gross margin, product gross margin, and service gross margin were 63.0%, 61.0%, and 68.8%, respectively, as compared with 64.5%, 63.8%, and 66.5%, respectively, in the first quarter of fiscal 2022.
  • Total gross margins by geographic segment were: 63.0% for the Americas, 63.3% for EMEA and 62.3% for APJC.

NVIDIA's Q3 sales drop to $5.93 billion, down 17% yoy

NVIDIA reported Q3 2022 revenue of $5.93 billion, down 17% from a year ago and down 12% from the previous quarter. Net income was $1.456 billion, down 51% yoy. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $0.58, down 50% from a year ago and up 14% from the previous quarter.

“We are quickly adapting to the macro environment, correcting inventory levels and paving the way for new products,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

“The ramp of our new platforms ― Ada Lovelace RTX graphics, Hopper AI computing, BlueField and Quantum networking, Orin for autonomous vehicles and robotics, and Omniverse ― is off to a great start and forms the foundation of our next phase of growth.

Highlights:

  • Data Center - Q3 revenue was $3.83 billion, up 31% from a year ago and up 1% from the previous quarter. During the quarter, the company began shipping the NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU based on the new NVIDIA Hopper architecture, with first systems available now.
  • Gaming - Q3 revenue was $1.57 billion, down 51% from a year ago and down 23% from the previous quarter.
  • Professional Visualization - Q3 revenue was $200 million, down 65% from a year ago and down 60% from the previous quarter.
  • Automotive and Embedded - Q3 revenue was $251 million, up 86% from a year ago and up 14% from the previous quarter.

AWS Region opens in Spain

Amazon announced the opening on AWS Region in Arag√≥n, Spain. The regions is officially named Europe (Spain) and the API name is eu-south-2. 

The AWS Europe (Spain) Region has three Availability Zones (AZ), enabling the deployment of applications across multiple data centers. Each Availability Zone is a fully isolated partition of AWS infrastructure that contains one or more data centers.

Availability Zones are separate and distinct geographic locations with enough distance to reduce the risk of a single event affecting the availability of the Region but near enough for business continuity for applications that require rapid failover and synchronous replication. 

AWS notes that is has had offices in Madrid since 2014 and in Barcelona since 2018 and has a broad network of local partners.

O-RAN Alliance elects DT's Alex Jinsung Choi as chairman

Members of the O-RAN Alliance elected Dr. Alex Jinsung Choi, SVP Group Technology at Deutsche Telekom, as the new chairman of the Board. Dr. Choi had previously served as COO of O-RAN ALLIANCE since its founding in 2018. In the chairmanship he replaces Andre Fuetsch, who served as chairman from 2018 until his retirement from AT&T in August 2022.

“The recently elected O-RAN ALLIANCE leadership stays fully committed to O-RAN’s mission to transform Radio Access Networks towards open, intelligent, virtualized and fully interoperable RAN,” said Dr. Alex Jinsung Choi, Chairman of the O-RAN ALLIANCE and SVP Group Technology, Deutsche Telekom. “Building on its foundation of specifications, open software development and testing and integration efforts, O-RAN will continue seeking ways to facilitate the open RAN ecosystem towards rapid progress of commercial deployments.”

O-RAN ALLIANCE Work Groups and Focus Groups recently published 53 new technical documents completing its Release 002. It includes two new specification titles:

  • A1 interface: Use Cases and Requirements – the first dedicated A1 interface use case specification with stage-2 level flow chart
  • The specification on a new E2 Service Model (E2SM), Cell Configuration and Control – covering Cell and slice-level resource configuration and control for network slicing use case

On October 25, 2022 during the Open RAN Summit at Fyuz in Madrid, O-RAN and TIP announced a further alignment of their value propositions and deliverables to complement each other seamlessly. Alignment between O-RAN and TIP enables the ecosystem to streamline the development of O-RAN based products, verify interfaces and interoperability of components, and demonstrate the functionality and operational performance of the open RAN solutions that are commercially available.

GBI deploys Infinera’s ICE6 800G Optical Engine

Ahead of the World Cup, Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has deployed Infinera’s ICE6 800G optical engine across its submarine and terrestrial networks between the Middle East and Europe.

The upgrade to ICE6 doubles GBI’s network capacity and provides connections of up to 800G per wavelength. GBI was able to rapidly and seamlessly integrate this new technology over its existing third-party optical line system by leveraging open optical networking principles, enabling 400 GbE services to its customers.

ArmorCode secures $14M for its AppSecOps

ArmorCode, a start-up based in Palo Alto, California, secured a $14 million in Series A funding for its AppSecOps.

ArmorCode's AppSecOps platform provides application security posture, vulnerability and compliance management, as well as DevSecOps automation. 

The funding round was led by Ballistic Ventures, the venture capital firm solely focused on backing cybersecurity startups, founded by Kevin Mandia, Barmak Meftah, Ted Schlein, Jake Seid, and Roger Thornton. Other investors include Sierra Ventures, Cervin, and industry luminaries such as John Donovan, the former CEO of AT&T Communications, Oliver Friedrichs, founder and former CEO of Phantom Cyber (acquired by Splunk), John M. Jack, current board member at Contrast Security and Illumio, among others, and Tom Reilly, former CEO of Cloudera and ArcSight. Founded in July 2020, ArmorCode's Series A brings its total funding to $25 million, underscoring its momentum, which includes a seven-figure annual recurring revenue within its first financial year and revenue doubling in consecutive quarters with customers that include Fortune 100 enterprises.

Bluetooth looks to expand into the 6 GHz band

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) kicked off a new specification development project to define the operation of Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) in additional unlicensed mid-band spectrum, including the 6 GHz frequency band. 

Bluetooth is the most widely deployed wireless standard in the world with over 5 billion products shipping each year.

“Over the last twenty years, Bluetooth technology has made our lives more productive, safer, healthier, and joyful,” said Mark Powell, CEO of the Bluetooth SIG. “The Bluetooth SIG community is constantly evolving the technology to meet ever expanding market demands for wireless communications.
