U.S. kicks off $45B “Internet for All” Initiative

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo kicked off the Internet for All initiative, which will invest $45 billion under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law signed by President Biden earlier this year.

The goal of the Internet for All initiative is to provide affordable, reliable, high-speed internet for everyone in America by the end of the decade. The initiative will be administered and implemented by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

“In the 21st century, you simply cannot participate in the economy if you don’t have access to reliable, affordable high-speed internet,” said Secretary Raimondo. “Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Americans across the country will no longer be held back by a lack of high-speed internet access. We are going to ensure every American will have access to technologies that allow them to attend class, start a small business, visit with their doctor, and participate in the modern economy.” 

The Internet for All has three Notices of Funding Opportunity: 

  • Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program ($42.5 billion);
  • Enabling Middle Mile Broadband Infrastructure Program ($1 billion); and, 
  • State Digital Equity Act programs ($1.5 billion).

To participate in the BEAD Program, states and other eligible entities must submit a letter of intent and a planning funds budget, which will unlock $5 million in planning funds and allow states to begin creating their five-year action plan. Each state will have direct support from dedicated NTIA staff through every step of the process. Each participating state is guaranteed a minimum $100 million allocation, with additional funding determinations made based on the forthcoming coverage maps from the Federal Communications Commission.  

The Enabling Middle Mile Broadband Infrastructure Program will award grants on a technology-neutral, competitive basis to eligible entities for the construction, improvement, or acquisition of middle-mile infrastructure. 

The State Digital Equity Planning Grant Program kicks off a series of Digital Equity Act steps that will invest $1.5 billion to heighten adoption and use, like digital literacy training, for those who need it most, including communities of color, rural communities, and older Americans.

U.S. Infrastructure bill directs $65 billion for broadband and middle mile

The U.S. House of Representative passed and President Biden signed the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package, which includes $65 billion to expand high-speed broadband across the country.The funding will be directed at areas that are unserved or underserved in broadband availability. Grants will also be available for connectivity projects in tribal areas, and for enabling middle mile broadband infrastructure."Unserved" is currently defined...


Applications open next month for $1 billion in Middle Mile projects

Funding applications will be open from June 21, 2022 until September 30, 2022 for the $1 billion available under the Middle Mile (MM) Program, as included under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Middle mile infrastructure broadly refers to the mid-section of Internet infrastructure connecting local broadband network to major carriers.

Grants can be used for the acquisition of facilities and equipment; tngineering design, permitting and work related to project reviews; personnel costs, incl. salaries and benefits for staff and consultants.  

Eligible entities include states and territories, tribal governments, local governments, electric utilities, etc.

NTT cites growth with Private 5G and IoT

Albemarle Corporation, a specialty chemicals company with leading positions in lithium, bromine, and refining catalysts, has selected NTT Ltd. to deploy a pilot private LTE/5G and Wi-Fi network at Albemarle’s lithium mine in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The network will enable engineers to connect with technicians for remote site surveys and assists. Previously, it was difficult for global engineers to visit Albemarle’s site due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, which significantly impacted the process of decision making and timing. The use of private LTE/5G will enable Albemarle to enhance its hybrid working process and reduce the amount of global travel needed to operate.

In addition, Transatel - subsidiary of NTT since 2019 - announces the worldwide deployment of a new 5G IoT solution for the industrial, IT and automotive sectors. After France, Belgium and Japan, Transatel’s global 5G IoT services is now available in the USA and will be extended to the rest of the world in the coming months. The announcement follows the recent launch of NTT’s breakthrough Private 5G Network as-a-service platform.

Starting May 12, NTT will be offering both private and public 5G connectivity in the USA. This mobile broadband continuity of service will prove to be critical for many industries, as IIoT applications process an ever-growing volume of data. Public 5G service will be available through Transatel’s global cellular IoT connectivity platform.

IDC offers conservative growth forecast for telecom services market

Worldwide spending on Telecom Services and Pay TV Services reached $1.566 billion in 2021, an increase of 1.6% year over year, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Semiannual Telecom Services Tracker. 

  • IDC expects worldwide spending on telecom and pay TV services to increase by 1.4% in 2022 and reach a total of $1,588 billion.
  • Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) market grew 0.2 percentage points faster than forecast in October 2021 Asia/Pacific grew 0.5 percentage points faster 
  • The Americas grew 1.0 percentage points faster 

Some additional observations from IDC:

Inflation should nominally have a positive impact on this market: the operators will be increasing their tariffs, clients will be paying more, and the total value of the market should be growing faster than previously expected. However, inflation also generates a deterioration of consumers' and businesses' purchasing power, thus causing a decrease in demand. It is to be noted that the impact of inflation in the telco services market will be stretched over the next several years. This is because a high proportion of users have two-year contracts with operators that guarantee stable fees until their contracts expire. That also means that the effects of inflation will initially be higher in the markets with a higher proportion of prepaid customers.

War in Ukraine will have a negative effect on the market for communications services in EMEA. It will primarily hit the Ukrainian market, which will see a considerable decline due to destroyed network infrastructure and a huge number of people leaving the country. The Russian market will also decline as local demand will be under pressure due to the recession caused by international sanctions. On the other hand, the war will positively impact the markets of neighboring countries (Poland, Slovakia, and Romania) that are hosting large numbers of Ukrainian refugees.

In addition, the COVID-19 saga has not ended yet. The current lockdowns in China and a possible emergence of new variants of the virus in the rest of the world might bring additional impacts to the market, primarily in the business fixed data services section. Although the previous waves of COVID did not drastically affect the global market for telecom services, the related global supply-chain disruptions are already causing shortages of end-user and network equipment and thus create new concerns for supply side participants. This all contributes to IDC's conservative forecast.

University of Technology Sydney builds private 5G with Nokia

Nokia and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) are now operating a private 5G installation supporting a connected digital microbrewery. It utilizes a cloud-based digital twin of an actual brewery to optimize the brewing process.

UTS’s Industry 4.0 Nano-Brewery, is part of its new Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Data Science testbed developed at the UTS Tech Lab. The Nano-Brewery forms part of an international production network, with an identical physical twin set up in TU Dortmund University in Germany. The 5G connected brewery captures and monitors production data at every step of the brewing process and uses this data, together with data from the physical twin in Dortmund and a digital twin in the cloud, to optimize the process.

5G connectivity is provided by Nokia’s FastMile 5G Gateways connected to a campus-wide Nokia Digital Automation Cloud 5G Standalone private wireless network. The 5G private wireless network is delivered using multiple Nokia AirScale Indoor Radio (ASiR) small cells positioned throughout the UTS Tech Lab campus. The private wireless 5G network forms part of the on-site Nokia 5G Futures Lab opened in November 2021 and is already being used to support other Industry 4.0 projects within Tech Lab such as the Australian Government-funded Nokia/UTS 5G Connected Cobots project.

Romania's GTS Telecom taps Ciena for network upgrade

GTS Telecom, an information technology and communications service provider in Romania and member of Deutsche Telekom AG, will deploy Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platforms and flexible grid ROADMs tp upgrade its national network from 10G to 100G. GTS will use WaveLogic Encryption for customers in the public sector who require enhanced security. GTS is also leveraging Ciena Services for remote service migration and commissioning.

“It was vital to us that our customers could benefit from high-performance connectivity across the country, and Ciena made it possible for us to make good on this aim,” said Răzvan Stoica, Managing Director at GTS Telecom. “The network provides improved scalability, security, capacity and low latency to support the growing high-bandwidth requirements of our customers. OneWeb reaches deal with Telefónica

OneWeb and Telefónica Global Solutions (TGS), the subsidiary of global telecommunications company Telefónica that manages the international Wholesale, Global Roaming, Multinationals and USA businesses, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve connectivity services across Europe and Latin America. 

OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite service will complement Telefónica’s existing offering in Europe and Latin America, enabling Telefónica to reach remote regions that they have not previously been able to serve. TGS will offer its expertise to promote and supply OneWeb’s low latency cellular backhaul services that can be deployed to help improve existing backhaul and support network upgrades to 4G/5G, while also providing backhaul backup for critical sites and infill capacity for special events. Where backhaul does not currently exist, OneWeb’s service will help expand Telefónica’s mobile coverage and extend enterprise connectivity.

Digital Realty commits to 158 MW of new solar energy

Digital Realty has committed to 158 megawatts (MW) of new solar power in California and Georgia.

The contracts include a 12-year agreement to support the development of a new 130 MW utility-scale solar project in Kern County, California. The project, developed by Terra-Gen as part of its Edwards Sanborn Solar Storage energy project, is one of the largest solar-plus-storage projects in the world and is expected to be completed in late-2022.

Additionally, Digital Realty is subscribing to Georgia Power's Customer Renewable Supply Procurement program. The company will receive 28 MW of new solar supply to support its Atlanta data center portfolio. The energy will be generated by new solar facilities located in Georgia. The program is expected to begin delivering power and renewable energy certificates to Digital Realty in 2024.

"These efforts are part of our strategy to reduce our carbon footprint," said Digital Realty CEO A. William Stein. "We are demonstrating that the data center industry is a key part of the transition to a digital economy that is powered by clean energy."

SpaceX completes double header launches from both coasts

Over a period of 2 days, SpaceX completed Starlink missions launched from California and Florida.

On Friday, May 13, a Falcon 9 launched 53 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.  This Falcon 9 first stage booster previously launched Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, DART, and two Starlink missions.

On Saturday, May 14 Falcon 9 launched 53 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Evoque plans 100MW data center campus in Nashville

Evoque announced a joint venture with Archer Datacenters to bring to market over 100MW of power capacity and over 500,000 square feet of data center space in Gallatin, Tennessee -- about 35 miles from downtown Nashville.

Evoque has earmarked $200mm to accelerate the expansion of the site, which includes a commitment to building a 100% renewable energy solution.

The original 28.5 acre campus is anchored by an 82,000 square foot data center shell, with over 40MW of available power today from Gallatin Department of Electricity’s adjacent substation. The initial project anticipates a 4-phased development, scalable on the existing site as well as an adjacent 32.8 acre parcel. The long-term expandability of 100+MW is possible in concert with the continuously updated transmission capacity of GDE and Tennessee Valley Authority (“TVA”).

ST and MACOM build Gallium-Nitride-on-Silicon prototypes

STMicroelectronics and MACOM Technology Solutions announced the successful production of radio-frequency Gallium-Nitride-on Silicon (RF GaN-on-Si) prototypes.

ST said the prototype wafers and devices have achieved cost and performance targets that would allow them to effectively compete with the incumbent laterally-diffused metal-oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) and GaN-on-SiC technologies on the market.  RF GaN-on-Silicon offers high potential for 5G and 6G infrastructure. The long-term incumbent RF power technology, laterally-diffused metal-oxide semiconductor (LDMOS), dominated early-generation RF power amplifiers (PAs). GaN can offer superior RF characteristics and significantly higher output power than LDMOS for these RF PAs. 

“We believe that the technology has now reached performance levels and process maturity where it can effectively challenge the established LDMOS and GaN-on-SiC and we can offer attractive cost and supply-chain advantages for high-volume applications, including Wireless Infrastructure,” said Edoardo Merli, Power Transistor Sub-Group General Manager and Executive Vice President of STMicroelectronics. “Commercializing RF GaN-on-Silicon products are the next big milestone in our collaboration with MACOM and with continued progress, we look forward to fully realizing the potential of this exciting technology.”

Southwest Airlines to install Viasat's Ka-band service

Southwest Airlines selected ViaSat's next generation Ka-band satellite in-flight connectivity (IFC) system to be factory-installed on all new aircraft deliveries, starting this fall.

Viasat's solution will support enhanced internet capabilities while onboard, including the ability to stream content and entertainment, watch live television, and access social media platforms and productivity applications on any internet-ready device, gate-to-gate.

Belgium's Pharrowtech raises €15M for 60 GHz wireless RF transceiver

Pharrowtech, a start-up based in Leuven, Belgium, announced the closure of its €15 million Series A funding round to continue developing next-generation 60 GHz wireless RF transceivers and antenna technology.

The company recently launched its 60 GHz CMOS Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuit (RFIC) PTR1060, and phased array antenna Radio-Frequency Module (RFM) PTM1060 for 5G unlicensed fixed wireless access, wireless infrastructure, and consumer applications. 

The IEEE 802.11ay-compliant CMOS RF chip is designed for indoor and outdoor wireless use cases that support the full 57 to 71 GHz bandwidth. The company also launched PTM1060 (RFM) phased array antenna modules to provide OEM/ODMs with a ready-to-use 60GHz solution.

This investment round was led by Innovation Industries of the Netherlands, and joined by Seed Round investors imec.xpand, Bloc Ventures, and KBC Focus Fund.

Juniper adds Steve Fernandez to its Board

Juniper Networks appointed Steve Fernandez to its Board of Directors, effective May 11, 2022. 

Fernandez served as the Global Chief Technology Officer of AIG since 2020. Prior to this role, he was the CTO of L’Oréal in Paris, France and led the global transformation of the company, creating a modern digital workplace for employees and successfully developing a technical culture focused on agility, speed and professional results. Steve has also held several C-suite level positions at prior companies, including Conisus, LLC and The Coca-Cola Company, Bottling Investments Group.

D-Wave enters Leap Quantum Cloud Service

D-Wave Systems announced the availability of the first Advantage quantum computer, accessible via the Leap quantum cloud service, which is part of the USC-Lockheed Martin Quantum Computing Center (QCC) hosted at USC’s Information Sciences Institute. 

  • Highlights:
  • The service will provide access to the first Advantage quantum system physically located in the United States. Advantage is the first quantum computer built for business that contains the new Advantage performance update released in October 2021 and features the highly connected Pegasus topology and 5000+ qubits.
  • Leap quantum cloud service users will immediately be able to access the Advantage quantum computer located at the QCC in real-time. Leap access also gives researchers, governments and enterprises access to all of the programming tools and hybrid quantum-classical resources offered through Leap.
  • Additionally, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and D-Wave announced that the U.S.-based system will be available today for use in Amazon Braket, expanding the number to three different D-Wave quantum systems available to AWS users.

This allows quantum developers to better represent constrained problems – such as production capacity, available funds, and asset tracking – by using continuous variables, unlocking a new class of problems and further accelerating commercialization of quantum applications. For example, with continuous variables, developers can determine optimal vehicle routes by considering capacity, travel/wait times and distances; pharmaceutical companies can more deeply analyze patient outcomes of drug trials by reviewing trial duration, time-to-patient outcomes and number of iterations; and energy operators can more effectively deliver power to customers through models that address generator output, fuel consumption and emission, and storage levels.

Cinturion's Trans Europe Asia System signs landing partner in India

Viettel High Technology, which is the R&D arm of Viettel and in charge of design, development, manufacturing, and commercialization of telecommunications solutions, is using the Qualcomm X100 5G RAN Accelerator Card and Massive MIMO Qualcomm QRU100 5G RAN Platform to accelerate the development and commercialization of high-performance Open RAN massive MIMO solutions.

Viettel's 4G infrastructure coverd 97% of Vietnam population and the operator's 5G services are available in 16 cities and provinces in Vietnam to date. 

Viettel develops full network elements including Devices, Radio Access Network (RAN), Transmission Network, and Core Network which are forming a strong foundation for digital society.

Qualcomm boosts its Snapdragon X70 Modem-RF System

 Building on its fifth-generation 5G modem-to-antenna solution announced in February and which is currently sampling, Qualcomm announced a number of new capabilities and milestones for its Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System: 

  • Qualcomm Smart Transmit 3.0 technology, an upgraded system-level feature licensed by Qualcomm Technologies that now extends support to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transmit power management. It enables real-time averaging of transmit power across 2G-5G, mmWave, Wi-Fi (2.4GHz 6/6E/7), and Bluetooth (2.4) radios to superior radio performance.
  • Smart Transmit 3.0 extends 5G coverage and improve uplink speeds, optimizing transmissions across cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas. Smart Transmit 3.0 helps devices smartly manage transmit power, allowing users to enjoy faster, more reliable connectivity.

BT revenue dips 2% but sees growth in Openreach

BT Group plc published the following results for the full year to 31 March 2022:

  • Revenue £20.9bn, down 2%, reflecting revenue decline in Enterprise and Global offset by growth in Openreach, with Consumer flat for the year and returning to growth in Q4; adjusted revenue down 2%
  • Adjusted EBITDA £7.6bn, up 2%, with revenue decline more than offset by lower costs from  modernisation programmes, tight cost management, and lower indirect commissions

Philip Jansen, Chief Executive, commenting on the results, said

“BT Group has again delivered a strong operational performance thanks to the efforts of our colleagues across the business. Openreach continues to build like fury, having now passed 7.2m premises with 1.8m connections; a strong and growing early take-up rate of 25%. Meanwhile, our 5G network now covers more than 50% of the UK population. We have the best networks in the UK and we’re continuing to invest at an unprecedented pace to provide unrivalled connectivity for our customers. At the same time we’re seeing record customer satisfaction scores across the business.

“Our modernisation continues at pace and we are extending our cost savings target of £2bn by end FY24 to £2.5bn by end FY25. We delivered EBITDA growth of 2% this year as strong savings from our modernisation programme more than offset weaker revenues from our enterprise businesses due to well-known market challenges.

“While the economic outlook remains challenging, we’re continuing to invest for the future and I am confident that BT Group is on the right track. As a result, we are today reconfirming our FY23 outlook for revenue growth, EBITDA of at least £7.9bn and also the reinstatement of our full year FY22 dividend, as promised, at 7.7 pence per share.”

Telstra Wholesale launches premium 5G and IOT to MVNOs

 Telstra Wholesale is launching a new 5G service and a series of IOT products for Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) customers.

The Telstra Wholesale 5G service will be available from July, initially reaching more than 75% of Australians. It will deliver Telstra Wholesale’s fastest-ever mobile speeds – up to 250 Mbps - and access to mmWave where available.

Glenn Osborne, Executive, Sales and Wholesale Segment, Telstra Wholesale said this expanded portfolio of services was about meeting the needs of a rapidly evolving mobile market.

Colt deploys Ribbon's Session Border Controllers

Colt Technology Services has deployed Ribbon's Microsoft-certified Session Border Controllers (SBCs) as part of its new Colt Intelligent Communications (CIC) with Cloud Session Border Controller offering across Japan.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) will use Nokia's DWDM solution in the access layer to upgrade its network to 5G for meeting future service capacity and reliability needs. 

Nokia said its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) will enable Vi to cost-effectively and sustainably enhance network capacity by minimising operational expenditure with reduced power consumption and carbon footprint. Nokia targets private 5G for Korean public sector

Nokia is partnering with Contela, a global technology vendor, to provide private 5G network solutions to Korean public sector organizations. 

Under the terms of the MoU, both companies will undertake marketing, sales and solutions convergence in private 5G networks. With this agreement, the companies will be able to offer local and customized solutions for Korean government industrial areas such as the smart cities, smart green industrial complex and educational institutes, enabling state-of-the-art digital transformation.

DigitalBridge to acquire Switch for $11 billion for its data centers

DigitalBridge Group agreed to acquire Switch, a leading colocation data center operator, for $34.25 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $11 billion, including the assumption of debt.

Switch, which was founded in 2000, operates SuperNAP data center campuses in Las Vegas, Reno, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company touts its high-resiliecy and high-security designs for mission critical workloads in its "Class 5" data centers. The company boasts zero downtime since company inception (2001). The Switch data centers are powered by 100% renewable energy.

Switch expands data center fleet to 16 with Data Foundry acquisition
