MobiledgeX acquired by Google Cloud

MobiledgeX, the edge computing company founded by Deutsche Telekom, has been acquired by Google Cloud, according to TelecomTV and other sources.

Neither company has commented on the transaction, although the MobiledgeX website and social media presence have been taken down. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

Deutsche Telekom deploys MobiledgeX Edge-Cloud

MobiledgeX, the edge computing company founded by Deutsche Telekom AG, unveiled its architecture for connecting mobile users to application cloud containers created by aggregating existing operator network resources.

Deutsche Telekom is now using the MobiledgeX Edge-Cloud R1.0 to power the first world's first public mobile edge network deployment and is already supporting the prototyping of developer use cases such as live trials around Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM).

The solution MobiledgeX Edge-Cloud R1.0 leverages application cloud containers created by aggregating existing operator network resources. At runtime, MobiledgeX Edge-Cloud R1.0 spins up the containers on-demand in edge cloud locations (also known as “cloudlets”) that optimally fulfill the needs of the desired application and user quality of experience.

Key features of MobiledgeX Edge-Cloud R1.0:

  • Device and platform-independent SDKs for Android and IOS devices in Java, C++, C# or REST that support edge node discovery, built-in identity and verified location services, with the ability to connect automatically to the nearest edge location. MobiledgeX will release these SDKs as open source to speed development times and flexibility.
  • A Distributed Matching Engine (DME) that is natively borne and integrated into Telekom Deutschland’s mobile network in Germany. The DME allows developers to ensure the identity and location of application users while guaranteeing their privacy as this data remains within the boundaries of the mobile service provider and is not disclosed to MobiledgeX.
  • A fully multi-tenant control plane that supports zero-touch provisioning of edge cloud resources via a Cloudlet Resource Manager. This architecture is massively scalable based on the number of distributed edge cloud locations and enables the operator to bring any combination of compute, storage and network resource pools to add to capacity independently of a preferred Virtualization Infrastructure Management (VIM) layer. For example, while Deutsche Telekom edge cloud resource pools are virtualized using OpenStack, MobiledgeX Edge-Cloud R1.0 equally supports other industry- standard VIMs such as VMware or native Kubernetes.
  • A global edge cloud SAAS portal that allows operators to visualize application delivery performance and developers to deploy their application containers.

MobiledgeX is highlighting the following use cases :

  • Automatically deploying application backends close to users based on their Verified Location and Identity. MobiledgeX Edge-Cloud R1.0 instantiates application containers to support streaming workloads similar to lambda functions ideally suited for increasingly immersive and massively multi-user workloads like multi-player gaming, robotics and AR maintenance that must ascertain trusted identity and location. The built-in “verified location” service automatically correlates GPS-reported location from the device using telemetry extracted from the mobile service provider’s infrastructure and directs mobile client to appropriate edge location.
  • Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality Performance Support. Makes lower latency available natively in the mobile network and geographically closer to end user devices. Enables AR and MR experiences on smart glasses or wearables where these devices do not natively provide the required CPU and GPU hardware capabilities, either due to cost, weight or power consumption reasons.
  •  Video and Image Processing that meets local privacy regulations. Platform guarantees in- country containment and privacy of user data, offering country-specific control planes that ensure country-specific applications and data remain in the country to satisfy GDPR and other privacy regulations.

Comcast demos 10G technologies

Comcast reached download speeds faster than 8 Gbps and upload speeds faster than 5 Gbps during a 10G event at CableLabs headquarters.

For the demo, Comcast connected a 10G-enabled Virtualized Cable Modem Termination System (vCMTS) linked by more than 80 kilometers of fiber to the demonstration site. The fiber terminated into a production switch, which connected to what is believed to be the world’s first fully functional 10G-enabled Full Duplex DOCSIS 4.0 node, along with a 10G prototype modem at CableLabs headquarters. Today’s demonstration is a first in a production-ready network environment, showing how live 10G deployments will work, orchestrated by Comcast’s Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) technology, which is already widely deployed.

“These 10G technologies represent the fastest, most efficient path to deliver multigigabit symmetrical speeds at scale everywhere, not just in select neighborhoods or towns,” said Elad Nafshi, EVP & Chief Network Officer at Comcast Cable. “The pace of 10G innovation is only accelerating, and Internet users around the world will reap the benefits.”

Comcast also demonstrated how its DAA network virtualization technology will deliver not just ultrafast 10G speeds, but also greater reliability and adaptability to support a range of next-generation network architectures. The DAA demo included two key components:

The demo showed how a single DAA-enabled vCMTS can seamlessly and simultaneously operate both 10G connections and PON (passive optical network) connections and deliver multi-gig services with identical levels of visibility and orchestration. While Comcast is primarily focused on 10G, the ability to easily blend 10G and PON provides enormous flexibility to support the widest range of geographies and customer needs.

The demo also showed how 10G and DAA will deliver greater reliability by leveraging the unprecedented visibility the technology provides into Internet performance at every level of the network from the core, all the way to individual customer gateways.

Comcast also offered a first look at a 10G node that will become a key element of 10G trials and deployments.

VMware targets Sovereign Cloud opportunity

VMware has established a Sovereign Cloud initiative to help governments and regulated industries to identify and engage with trusted national or regional cloud service providers to meet their unique sovereign cloud requirements.

The newest VMware Sovereign Cloud designated partners are IONOS SE, Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Sopra Steria AS, and TDRA. This brings the total to 14 participants in the VMware Sovereign Cloud initiative in distinct sovereign regions covering Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Norway, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, India, and the United States.

“We are pleased to welcome new partners to our Sovereign Cloud initiative and see existing partners demonstrate momentum in meeting the sovereign cloud requirements of customers around the world,” said Rajeev Bhardwaj, vice president of product management, cloud infrastructure business group, VMware. “New data services from Tanzu will enable all our VMware Cloud Provider partners, particularly, sovereign cloud-focused partners, to expand their data and application transformation portfolios and accelerate cloud adoption. This will allow customers to remain within sovereign regions and jurisdictional control while achieving cutting edge transformation at scale.”

Through VMware Cloud Director and its technology ecosystem, VMware said it helps ensure that sovereign cloud providers have a wealth of solutions to augment their offerings. Some key capabilities:

  • Integrated Self-Service Sovereign Object Storage: Sovereign clouds require local Object Storage capabilities to meet the needs of data residency, a key pillar in sovereign clouds. Cloudian provides an integrated Object storage service that meets growing data volumes of national data and innovation in application development.
  • Ransomware protection, backup, and recovery: Data protection is another critical aspect of Sovereign cloud as all applications and workloads can be targets for cybercrime. Ransomware protection from Veeam and Cloudian uses immutable storage and instant workload recovery to help protect sovereign environments and critical national data from being changed or encrypted.
  • Key management services: Sovereign cloud environments require the highest levels of protection, with a core requirement for encryption and key management. Fortanix delivers an integrated data security platform that provides VMware Cloud providers’ customers more control over their security-sensitive workloads and simplifies partner key services with encryption, tokenization, and secrets management.
  •  Additionally, Fortanix provides VMware Sovereign Cloud customers full control and ownership of the keys within the VMware Sovereign cloud boundary. Fortanix DSM complements this with FIPS 140-2 level 3 certified hardware security modules and key management with regional level isolation and enables full compliance with specific data privacy/transfer regulations including Shrems II and GDPR.

NETGEAR cites COVID-induced lockdowns in China for sales dip

NETGEAR reported Q1 net revenue of $210.6 million, a decrease of 33.8% from the comparable prior year quarter.

First quarter 2022 GAAP operating loss of $58.5 million impacted by non-cash impairment charges of $44.4 million, or (27.8)% of net revenue, as compared to operating income of $31.3 million, or 9.9% of net revenue, in the comparable prior year quarter. First quarter 2022 non-GAAP net loss per diluted share was $0.28, as compared to net income per diluted share of $0.99 in the comparable prior year quarter.

Patrick Lo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NETGEAR, commented, “We ended the first quarter with net revenue of $210.6 million and non-GAAP operating margin of (4.4)%, within the range of our recently revised guidance. We continued to experience strong demand for our SMB products, especially on our ProAV switches; however, our ability to deliver meaningfully higher revenue was constrained by COVID-induced lockdowns in China which impacted supply of components to our supply chain partners. On the CHP side, we saw the continued year over year and sequential growth in end user sales of our super-premium mesh products represented by our Orbi 8 and Orbi 9. Meanwhile overall CHP sales were negatively impacted by the U.S. consumer WiFi market contracting from approximately 15% above 2019 levels entering the first quarter to roughly flat to 2019 exiting the first quarter. The lower top line performance negatively impacted our operating leverage and resulting margin performance in the quarter.”

Mr. Lo continued, “In spite of these challenges, it’s clear that our core long-term strategy of focusing on the premium, higher-margin segments of the WiFi mesh market and the ProAV revolution remains intact. As the pioneer of the Tri and Quad band WiFi segment we are seeing great reception of our $1,500 Quadband WiFi 6E Orbi. Buoyed by the success of our premium WiFi products, we ended the quarter with 627,000 paid subscribers for our services business and remain encouraged by this progress towards our full year target of 750,000 subscribers.”
