AAE-1 subsea cable doubles capacity with Infinera

The Asia-Africa-Europe-1 Consortium (AAE-1), which operates one of the largest subsea cable systems in the world, recently completed a significant upgrade with Infinera.

 The upgrade, which is based on Infinera’s fourth-generation Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE4) technology and Instant Bandwidth capability, enabled AAE-1 to double the capacity on its intercontinental network while reducing total cost of ownership and increasing service agility and network reliability.

 AAE-1’s cable system spans 25,000 kilometers of subsea and terrestrial network. The AAE-1 cable system terminates at two points of presence in Singapore and is the only next-generation cable that continues further into Asia through diverse terrestrial routes across Thailand, providing connectivity to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Hong Kong. This unique routing enables AAE-1 to deliver one of the lowest-latency routes between Hong Kong, India, the Middle East, and Europe.

Mobile operator survey: 81% say progress toward 5G is moving rapidly

Approximately 30% of mobile service providers are already proactively planning to add 5G standalone capabilities to their networks, and another 9 percent say their companies will move directly to standalone, according to a new survey conducted by Business Performance Innovation (BPI) Network.

Standalone 5G will require a whole new network core utilizing a cloud-native, virtualized, service-based architecture. Many respondents, in fact, say they are making significant progress toward network virtualization.


The new global study report, “Toward a More Secure 5G World,” which was developed in partnership with A10 Networks, finds that COVID-19 is not expected to significantly delay 5G deployments. The percentage of mobile service providers who say their companies are “moving rapidly toward commercial deployment” has increased significantly in the past year, climbing from 26 percent in a survey announced in early 2019 to 45 percent in the new survey. Virtually all respondents say improved security is a critical network requirement and top concern in the 5G era.

Among key findings of the survey:

  • 81% say industry progress toward 5G is moving rapidly, mostly in major markets, or is at least in line with expectations.
  • 71% expect to begin 5G network build-outs within 18 months, including one-third who have already begun or will do so in 2020.
  • 95% percent say virtualizing network functions is important to their 5G plans, and some three-quarters say their companies are either well on their way or making good progress toward virtualization.
  • 99% view deployment of mobile edge clouds as an important aspect of 5G networks, with 65% saying they expect edge clouds on their 5G networks within 18 months.

ARM unveils its latest mobile CPUs and GPUs

Arm introduced its latest Cortex-A78 CPU, Mali-G78 and Ethos-N78 machine learning chip for next generation, 5G smartphones.

The new Arm Cortex-A78 CPU is designed for multi-day, immersive 5G experiences. It promises a 20% increase in sustained performance over Cortex-A77-based devices within a 1-watt power budget, and more efficient management of compute workloads along with greater on-device Machine Learning (ML) performance.

The Mali-G78, which will deliver a 25% increase in graphics performance relative to Mali-G77, brings support for up to 24 cores. Arm is also introducing a new sub-premium tier of GPUs. The first in this new tier is the Arm Mali-G68, which supports up to 6 cores and inherits all the latest Mali-G78 features, enabling our partners to deliver high-performance experiences to a wider audience of developers and consumers.

Arm also introduced a Cortex-X Custom program to give OEMs the option of having more flexibility and scalability for increasing performance. The Cortex-X Custom Program allows for customization and differentiation beyond the traditional roadmap of Arm Cortex products, enabling our partners with a solution for providing the ultimate performance for specific use cases. Arm Cortex-X1 is the program’s first CPU and the most powerful Cortex CPU to date. With a 30% peak performance increase over Cortex-A77, it offers an even more competitive solution for flagship smartphones and large-screen devices.

Telia launches commercial 5G in Sweden

Telia Company recently inaugurated its commercial 5G network in Sweden, with service initially available in Stockholm powered by Ericsson Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions.

Initial services on the 700Mhz band will cover most of central Stockholm by mid-June, including the Norrmalm, Östermalm and Vasastan districts.

Telia aims to enhance and supplement its low-band 5G commercial services with additional nationwide 5G coverage, including mid- and high-bands, following the auction of the related spectrum by the Swedish government later this year. For this launch Telia is using its existing 700MHz spectrum, boosted by LTE and New Radio (NR) carrier aggregation.

Intelsat opts into FCC accelerated C-band clearing plan

Intelsat filed a written commitment with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to accelerate clearing of the U.S. C-band spectrum. Intelsat completed the filing in advance of the FCC’s May 29 deadline.

In March, the FCC finalized its Expanding Flexible Use of the 3.7 to 4.2 GHz Band order, which requires the lower 280 megahertz of the 3.7 to 4.2 gigahertz C-band spectrum, plus a 20 megahertz guard band, to be cleared and repurposed for use by 5G services, by relocating existing satellite services to the upper part of the band.

FCC approves C-Band spectrum rules

The Federal Communications Commission voted to approve new rules to accelerate the auction and transfer of a wide swath of 3.5 GHz spectrum from the satellite industry for new uses, including 5G.

The 280 megahertz of mid-band spectrum will be made available via a public auction.

Within the 3.7-4.2 GHz band, the FCC has is allocating the 3.7-4.0 GHz portion of the band for mobile use and 280 megahertz (3.7-3.98 GHz band) will be auctioned by the FCC for wireless services in the contiguous United States.  Another 20 megahertz (3.98-4.0 GHz) will serve as a guard band while existing satellite operations will be repacked into the upper 200 megahertz of the band (4.0-4.2 GHz).

Satellite operators will be able to receive accelerated relocation payments of $9.7 billion if they meet accelerated clearing milestones.

FCC expects to conduct an auction beginning on December 8, 2020.

Samsung Electronics intros stand-alone security chip for mobiles

Samsung Electronics Co. introduced a Secure Element (SE) chip and enhanced security software for mobile devices that offers protection for tasks such as booting, isolated storage, mobile payment and other applications. The latest security chip is Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (CC EAL) 6+ certified, the highest level acquired by a mobile component.

“In this era of mobility and contact-less interactions, we expect our connected devices, such as smartphones or tablets, to be highly secure so as to protect personal data and enable fintech activities such as mobile banking, stock trading and cryptocurrency transactions,” said Dongho Shin, senior vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “With the new standalone security element solution (S3FV9RR), Samsung is mounting a powerful deadbolt on smart devices to safeguard private information.”

Samsung’s new security solution supports hardware-based root of trust (RoT), secure boot and device authentication that brings mobile security to the next level. Especially for service providers, manufacturers and organizations, secure device authentication is enhanced with the RoT when running proprietary applications on a mobile device. As a bootloader initiates, a chain of trust is activated through which each and every firmware with approved keys is sequentially validated. This secure booting process is handled by the RoT, guarding the device against any possible malicious attacks or unauthorized software updates.

Xilinx spins 20-nm, radiation-tolerant, space-grade FPGAs

Xilinx introduced a 20-nanometer (nm) space-grade FPGA, offering full radiation tolerance and ultra-high throughput and bandwidth performance for satellite and space applications.

The new 20nm Radiation Tolerant (RT) Kintex UltraScale XQRKU060 FPGA provides true unlimited on-orbit reconfiguration, over a 10x increase in digital signal processing (DSP) performance – ideal for payload applications – and full radiation tolerance across all orbits.

The XQRKU060 offers rich DSP capabilities optimized for dense power-efficient compute. It is equipped with 2,760 UltraScale DSP slices and provides up to 1.6 TeraMACs of signal processing compute, more than a 10X increase compared to the prior generation, as well as dramatic efficiency gains for floating point computations. The increased compute capability in space is paired with massive I/O bandwidth from 32 high-speed transceivers (SerDes) that can run up to 12.5Gbps to deliver 400Gbps aggregate bandwidth.

The XQRKU060 also features robust 40x40mm ceramic packaging capable of withstanding vibrations and handling during launch as well as radiation effects in harsh orbit environments. The architecture features an innovative design for single event effects (SEE) mitigation thereby meeting the industry requirements for all orbits, including low earth orbit (LEO), medium earth orbit (MEO), geosynchronous orbit (GEO), and deep space missions.

Kyoto Semiconductor intros Two-Wavelength Photodiode

Kyoto Semiconductor Co. introduced a Two-Wavelength Photodiode with photosensitivity for a wide range of wavelengths, from 400 to 1,700 nm, arrayed along the same light axis. The device is capable of being surface-mounted, with silicon and indium-gallium-arsenide photodiodes. Samples will be available from August 31, 2020.

Applications could include spectroscopic analysis, enabling the identification of objects and their characteristics by reflecting light off those objects and measuring the degrees of transmission and reflection.

KT brings 5G to warehouse carts

KT is using 5G self-driving carts at its own Seobu distribution and logistics center.

The 5G autonomous carts transport smartphones and other devices to designated locations, as requested by the control center and the person in charge. The self-driving logistics vehicles and AIV service are based on KT's integrated mobility platform, dubbed "5G Mobility Makers." The platform is at the core of KT's connected car services, which feature automated driving control by collecting and analyzing data produced by different vehicles.

Australian researchers achieve 44.2 Tbps from a single light source.

Researchers from Monash, Swinburne and RMIT universities in Australia have tested a single light source delivering 44.2 Tbps. The research, which is published in the journal Nature Communications, tested a device that replaces 80 lasers with one single piece of equipment known as a micro-comb.

The ultra-high data transmission occurred over 75 km of standard optical fibre using the single integrated chip source over the C-band at 1550 nm with a spectral efficiency of 10.4 bits s−1 Hz−1. Micro-comb spacing of 48.9 GHz enabled the use of 64 QAM - quadrature amplitude modulated.

Professor Moss, Director of the Optical Sciences Centre at Swinburne, says: “In the 10 years since I co-invented micro-comb chips, they have become an enormously important field of research. “It is truly exciting to see their capability in ultra-high bandwidth fibre optic telecommunications coming to fruition. This work represents a world-record for bandwidth down a single optical fibre from a single chip source, and represents an enormous breakthrough for part of the network which does the heaviest lifting. Micro-combs offer enormous promise for us to meet the world’s insatiable demand for bandwidth.”

Crehan: Server-class Ethernet adapter market up 30% YoY in Q1

Shipments of total server-class Ethernet adapters increased more than thirty percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2020, according to a recent report from Crehan Research. This increase is the largest the market has had in over eight years – see accompanying figure – and resulted in record shipments. In correlation with these record shipments, server-class Ethernet adapter revenue also had a record quarter and posted an even higher growth rate.

“Data center operators added server networking capacity at record levels to ensure delivery of the digital-based services that have become so important as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research. “These services include telemedicine and food and merchandise delivery, as well as the enablement of working, schooling and entertainment from home. On top of this, data center operators had to ensure the continuity of existing bandwidth-hungry applications and initiatives in a very challenging and disrupted supply-chain environment.”

Other noteworthy results from Crehan’s Server-Class Ethernet Adapter report include:

  • The strength in the server-class Ethernet adapter market was broad-based with all speeds – from one gigabit Ethernet (GbE) up to 200GbE – experiencing shipment increases. However, 25GbE, 50GbE, and 100GbE growth was particularly strong during the quarter with combined shipments more than doubling year-over-year.
  • Intel accounted for the majority of total server-class Ethernet adapter shipment volumes and shipment growth.
  • Nvidia (Mellanox) comprised the majority share of shipment speeds of 25GbE-and-greater and drove most of the robust growth in this segment.
  • Marvell saw its 25GbE QLogic-based adapter shipments more than double year-over-year, as a result of strong blade server adoption of its FastLinQ products.
  • Vendor-built SmartNIC shipments more than tripled year-over-year but still comprised a relatively small portion of total server-class Ethernet adapter volumes. Broadcom’s Stingray product drove most of this growth.
“Given the migration to higher speed server-class Ethernet adapter connections, the bandwidth increase in the quarter was even higher than the shipment increase, which further accelerated a recent inflection in server networking bandwidth growth,” Crehan said.

Alibaba Cloud grew 58% YoY in March quarter

Alibaba's cloud division recorded sales of RMB 12.217 billion (US$1.725 billion) for its most recent quarter, up 58% YoY.  The growth was primarily driven by increased revenue contributions from both its public cloud and hybrid cloud businesses. Adjusted EBITA was a loss of RMB179 million (US$25 million).

Huawei develops CableFree antenna design for 5G masts

Huawei has developed a "CableFree" antenna design for 5G base stations that significantly reduces the internal complexity for multi-band services.

Huawei's new design features cable-free feeding and integrated phase shifters. This produces a distinct increase in antenna integration, tangibly improving antenna performance.

Highlights:

  1. Exceptional high-band coverage for 5G. CableFree improves antenna radiation efficiency by approximately 20%, boosting high-quality coverage of the 5G era.
  2. Higher output power to facilitate 5G multi-band and multi-channel applications. 5G is designed to meet high-capacity and high-speed requirements, and this highlights the necessity of introducing new spectrum and deploying high-order MIMO technology. To adapt to this trend, antennas must accommodate a high power of up to 1 kW, far above 500 to 600 watts of previous radio access technologies. CableFree increases the antenna power capacity by more than 80%, meeting the requirements for higher output power in the 5G era.
  3. Reduced antenna weight to facilitate installation. A higher level of antenna component integration offers an effective approach to reduce antenna weight. With CableFree, a six-band antenna can be 10 kg lighter. The weight of multi-band antennas can be kept below 50 kg. As a result, a crane is not required during installation, simplifying installation and reducing cost.
  4. Better PIM performance. PIM is short for passive intermodulation, reflecting signal interaction at the junction of two metal mechanical components of antennas. CableFree reduces screws and soldering points in antennas by 80%, reducing PIM risks while also ensuring long-term PIM stability. The resulting novel architecture and process further improve production automation and consistency among batches.

To date, CableFree has been successfully applied to Huawei's Munich Pro, Golden Mini, and London Pro series antennas, as well as 32T32R Massive MIMO products, helping customers quickly deploy high-quality 5G networks.


PAWR Project to test AI-Driven Spectrum Sharing

The Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) Project Office, led by US Ignite and Northeastern University, announces $2.7 million in new funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense for development work on advanced spectrum sharing technologies. 

The PAWR program will perform spectrum sharing tests on a live 5G-NR network at the POWDER wireless testbed site in Salt Lake City, Utah. The researchers hope to demonstrated how two mobile operators can occupy spectrum in the same CBRS channel autonomously using AI.

PAWR is funded by the National Science Foundation and a consortium of 35 industry partners.

“When we started the PAWR program to develop and deploy four city-scale wireless testbeds across the country, it was with the intention of creating shared infrastructure to enable new research into advanced communications network technologies,” said Joe Kochan, Principal Investigator and Project Director for the PAWR Project Office. “We’re gratified to be able to support the DOD’s mission today to further network performance with greater spectrum sharing capabilities in the transition to 5G and beyond.”

Nokia joins the Open RAN Policy Coalition

Nokia has joined the Open RAN Policy Coalition, which was formed earlier this year to promote policies that will advance the adoption of open and interoperable solutions in the Radio Access Network (RAN) as a means to create innovation, spur competition and expand the supply chain for advanced wireless technologies including 5G.

In addition to the O-RAN Alliance, Nokia has championed open standards in 3GPP, the Linux Foundation’s ONAP initiative, ETSI’s Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) initiative, and more.


Open RAN Policy Coalition elects AT&T's Boyer as chairman

The Open RAN Policy Coalition elected representatives from 12 companies to serve on its Board of Directors.

Chris Boyer of AT&T was elected to serve as the Coalition’s Chairman; Eric Wenger of Cisco will serve as Vice-Chair; Nick Fetchko of Verizon as Treasurer; and Becky Fraser of Qualcomm as Secretary.

Open RAN Policy Coalition seeks to diversify supply chain

A new Open RAN Policy Coalition has been formed to promote policies that will advance the adoption of open and interoperable solutions in the Radio Access Network (RAN) as a means to create innovation, spur competition and expand the supply chain for advanced wireless technologies including 5G.

The coalition believes that the U.S. Federal Government has an important role to play in facilitating and fostering an open, diverse and secure supply chain for advanced wireless technologies, including 5G, such as by funding research and development, and testing open and interoperable networks and solutions, and incentivizing supply chain diversity.

As evidenced by the current global pandemic, vendor choice and flexibility in next-generation network deployments are necessary from a security and performance standpoint,” said Diane Rinaldo, Executive Director, Open RAN Policy Coalition.  “By promoting policies that standardize and develop open interfaces, we can ensure interoperability and security across different players and potentially lower the barrier to entry for new innovators.”

Introducing the CBRS Smart Radio by Doodle Labs

Doodle Labs introduced a new model of its Smart Radio that operates at the CBRS band (3550-3700 MHz) for use in low-latency, private wireless networks.

Doodle Labs's new RM-3625 Smart Radio can be configured to operate in both the Citizens Band Radio Service Device (CBSD-A) and End User Device (EUD) roles for mobile Industrial IoT use cases. GLOBALFOUNDRIES adopts ITAR security and export control at Fab8

GLOBALFOUNDRIES will implement export control security measures at its most advanced manufacturing facility, Fab 8, in Malta, New York.

Specifically, the company plans to bring its Fab 8 facility into compliance with both the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) standards and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), making the company the most advanced ITAR foundry in the United States.

The new control assurances, which will go into effect later this year, will make confidentiality and integrity protections available for defense-related applications, devices or components manufactured at GF’s Fab 8 facility.

GF notes that it has invested over $13 billion in Fab 8 to date.


ZTE demos 5G Stand Alone in Belarus

ZTE demonstrated a 5G SA (Stand Alone) network in test mode in Belarus in partnership with A1, a Belarusian telecommunications operator. The test network operates in the 3.5 GHz spectrum.

A1 has also completed Belarus’s first call in a new standard format, by virtue of VoNR (Voice over New Radio) technology for 5G packet voice transmission.

The 5G SA network, under the 3.5 GHz spectrum bandwidth, features a great support of a variety of applications, such as Gigabit without Fiber Connectivity, Cloud XR, ultra-HD live broadcast, automatic driving and remote surgery.

“The path of A1 to the deployment of fifth-generation communications began in 2016 with the launch of the world's first fully virtual mobile core network together with ZTE,” said Christian Laqué, A1 Deputy General Director for Technical Issues. “Then, we were the first in Belarus to implement such innovative solutions as NB-IoT, eSIM, VoLTE, VoWiFi, thereby laying a solid foundation for the future development of 5G.”

Zayo gains UK government procurement status

Zayo has been placed on two of the UK Government’s key procurement mechanisms for the provision of fiber connectivity.

Zayo said these placements enable it to provide design, installation, testing and fiber installation for organisations across the UK public sector.

Nokia debuts WaveFabric Elements: photonic chips, devices, subsystems

Nokia unveiled its WaveFabric Elements portfolio of photonic chips, devices and subsystems, including its fifth generation coherent digital signal processor family, the Photonic Service Engine V (PSE-V).
The company said its WaveFabric Elements address the demanding power, performance, and cost-per-bit requirements of 400G networking across data center, metro, core and subsea applications.

Nokia’s WaveFabric Elements portfolio combines digital signal processing (DSP) and optics technologies focused on emerging end-to-end 400G applications. The new, fifth generation coherent DSP family consists of multiple designs optimized for different optical networking applications, form factors, and platforms. These include:

  • PSE-Vs (super coherent), which can run up to 90 Gbaud and employ the second generation of Nokia Bell Labs-pioneered probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS). PSE-Vs are capable of transporting up to 800G, while providing 60% greater reach, 40% lower power per bit, and 15% greater spectral efficiency than previous DSP generations. 
  • PSE-Vc (compact), which enables programmable capacity from 100G to 400G with metro to long haul capability. Its extremely low power enables integration into a variety of pluggable transceiver modules.

The new DSPs are complemented by the CSTAR portfolio of coherent optical modules from its recent acquisition of Elenion Technologies. CSTAR leverages state-of-the-art silicon photonics and packaging technology, and addresses applications, including intra-data center, metro DCI and long-reach optical transport. In addition to pairing them with the new PSE-V DSPs within Nokia platforms, the company will sell them independently to industry partners for integration into pluggable transceiver modules available to the broader market.

The CSTAR family of optical engines is currently shipping to customers. PSE-V-based platforms and pluggables will be available beginning in Q4 2020.

Nokia to acquire Elenion for silicon photonics

Nokia agreed to acquire Elenion a start-up developing silicon photonics-based System-on-Chip solutions that can be produced in a CMOS foundry. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Elenion, which was founded in 2014 and is based in New York City, develops highly integrated, low-cost silicon photonics technologies for short-reach and high-performance optical interfaces and has pioneered a design toolset which enables a greatly simplified, low cost, scalable manufacturing process. The Elenion platform simplifies integration with optical chipsets, lowers power consumption, improves port density and helps to lower the overall cost per bit for network operators.

Nokia said Elenion's state-of-the-art silicon photonics design platform improves product costs by bringing simplification and scale to the optical supply chain. It is expected to bring time-to-market and cost advantages to Nokia’s broad portfolio of networking solutions.

Juniper's Mist AI-powered Wi-Fi offers contact tracing

Mist Systems' AI-powered enterprise Wi-Fi is now supporting key workplace business continuity safety tasks like proximity tracing, journey mapping and hot zone alerting as part of strategic contact tracing and social distancing initiatives.

Juniper said that by using Mist access points and cloud services in conjunction with Wi-Fi and/or BLE-enabled devices such as phones and badges, enterprises can now support:

  • Proximity tracing - If an individual identifies as COVID-19 positive (or is experiencing symptoms), enterprises can quickly identify and notify other employees, guests or customers that may have been in close proximity to that individual while onsite. 
  • Journey mapping - Customers can view historical traffic patterns and dwell times for employees who have reported testing positive for COVID-19 – from the moment they were onsite to departure. Journey mapping can identify high-traffic hot zones so customers can take safety measures such as reconfiguring workspaces and deploying additional cleaning efforts.  
  • Hot zone alerting - By looking at the quantity of devices and locations in specific areas, enterprises can disperse or divert traffic away from congested areas with real-time, location-based alerting. They can also view trends over time to identify certain areas for proactive measures.

Intelsat offers Cellular Backhaul Solution for U.S. Mobile Operators

Intelsat launched CellBackhaul, an end-to-end managed service that helps Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) provide cost-efficient and rapid 4G and 5G broadband coverage to rural areas of the United States.

As an end-to-end cellular backhaul managed service, Intelsat CellBackhaul includes:

  • Network-design consultation
  • Connectivity from the MNO's cell sites to their core network over Intelsat's high-performance integrated space and ground network
  • Satellite antenna and modem, plus additional equipment installation and maintenance options
  • Guaranteed Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • 24x7 network-operations support

“We innovate to help our customers connect more people, places, and devices they otherwise would not be able to connect, and we do that on a global scale,” said Intelsat Director of Product Management for Networks, Gerry Collins. “Our service will enable our U.S. mobile network operators to quickly and cost-effectively expand their coverage and bring connectivity into unserved and underserved areas, including many previously considered unreachable or unprofitable.”

Intelsat also noted that the FCC is moving forward with its planned $9 billion 5G Rural Fund. As much as 67% of the U.S. landmass in 49 states and three U.S. territories could be eligible for funds to bring 5G into rural communities and support connectivity needs of American farms and ranches – a tremendous opportunity for U.S. MNOs.

Intelsat plans to roll out the Intelsat CellBackhaul service to mobile operators in additional regions, including Africa, in late 2020.

Nokia to supply fiber solutions to Openreach

Nokia will supply its fiber solutions to Openreach to help meet its target of bringing ultra-fast and reliable broadband access to 20 million homes across the UK by the mid-to-late 2020s.

Nokia will provide GPON and XGS-PON technologies to expand Openreach’s fiber-rich network to reach 4.5 million premises by the end of March 2021. The solution, which includes the 7360 ISAM FX, Nokia 7362 ISAM DF and Nokia ISAM ONTs, is capable of delivering up to 10Gbps symmetrical broadband speeds in the future and supports a smooth evolution from current traditional deployments to virtualized access-network control and management (SDAN – Software Defined Access Networking) by software upgrade. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Nokia described the agreement as a key milestone in its extensive partnership with Openreach to deliver multi-Gigabit, next generation PON connectivity to customers and builds on an extensive end-to-end network framework that has been established over the past years. This includes G.fast technology which currently allows Openreach to offer 100s of Mbps to homes in areas where fiber is not available yet.

Openreach picks ADTRAN's OLTs and Cloud Platform

Openreach, the wholesale infrastructure arm of BT, has selected ADTRAN’s SDX Series of OLTs and Mosaic Cloud Platform to help it achieve its ambition of making gigabit and multi-gigabit services available to 20 million homes across the UK by the mid-to-late 2020s with its Full Fibre network.

ADTRAN said its SDX platform will enable Openreach to economically scale its GPON and XGS-PON network with a level of flexibility that could not be realized with traditional access solutions.

Couchbase raises $105 million in Series G for NoSQL database

Couchbase, which offers a NoSQL database, raised $105 million in its Series G round of fundraising.

The new funding round was led by GPI Capital, also included oversubscribed participation from existing investors Accel, Sorenson Capital, North Bridge Venture Partners, Glynn Capital, Adams Street Partners, and Mayfield.

Couchbase said its customer base now exceeds 500 enterprises, including over 30% of the Fortune 100. In its latest fiscal year, the company reports over 70% total contract value growth, 50%+ new business growth, and 35%+ growth in average subscription deal size.  The company has nearly $100M in committed annual recurring revenue.

NVIDIA's data center business tops $1 billion in quarterly sales, up 80% YoY

NVIDIA reported revenue of $3.08 billion for its first fiscal quarter ended April 26, 2020, up 39 percent from $2.22 billion a year earlier, and down 1 percent from $3.11 billion in the previous quarter.

GAAP earnings per diluted share for the quarter were $1.47, up 130 percent from $0.64 a year ago, and down 4 percent from $1.53 in the previous quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $1.80, up 105 percent from $0.88 a year earlier, and down 5 percent from $1.89 in the previous quarter.

NVIDIA completed its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies  April 27, 2020, for a transaction value of $7 billion. It also transitioned its GPU Technology Conference to an all-digital format, drawing more than 55,000 registered participants, while NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote videos were viewed 3.8 million times in their first three days.

U.S. Department of State to require 5G Clean Path

The U.S. Department of State will begin requiring a “clean path” for all 5G network traffic between U.S. diplomatic facilities and the United States. U.S. military facilities are also expected to participate in the 5G Clean Path initiative.

The goal is to ensure that all 5G data transiting U.S. diplomatic facilities only cross trusted network equipment.

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo said the law must prevent Huawei and ZTE from having any equipment in the path of traffic along the 5G clean path.

EKINOPS secures additional financing

EKINOPS has secured a new €12 million credit facility from its bank partners. Ninety percent of the loan is guaranteed by the French state under the PGE state-guaranteed loan scheme.

In addition, EKINOP's U.S. subsidiary also secured financing under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) offered to SMEs by the Small Business Administration.

5G Open Innovation Lab mentors first 17 start-ups

A new 5G Open Innovation Lab (5G OI Lab) is now underway with support founding partners Intel, NASA and T-Mobile.

5G OI Lab will provide engineering, technology and industry resources to help selected start-ups to develop, test and bring to market new use cases that unleash the potential of 5G.

"Our first program provides start-ups with virtual access to mentors and tools to collaborate directly with technology and business leaders to design and bring to life their vision and dreams for new 5G applications." said Jim Brisimitzis, general partner of the 5G Open Innovation Lab. "We've adapted our program into a virtual format in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful to our partners for stepping up their support to ensure our first cohort has the best experience possible in a virtual environment."

The Lab has selected 17 companies as members of the first cohort that will participate in a 12-week program.  In addition to three companies that are currently in stealth mode, the first cohort includes the following startups:

MEF 3.0 certification now encompasses 24 Service Providers

MEF noted a significant milestone for its certification programs for Carrier Ethernet and SD-WAN services.

Twenty-four service providers from around the world now offer a combined total of 77 certified MEF 3.0 SD-WAN and Carrier Ethernet (CE) services.

In March 2020, MEF announced that Comcast Business, PCCW Global, Spectrum Enterprise, and Telia Company were the first service providers in the world to become MEF 3.0 SD-WAN certified, demonstrating conformity to the industry’s only standard for SD-WAN managed services.

MEF 3.0 SD-WAN certification – which has now shifted from the pilot phase to general availability – is expected to play an important role in driving growth of the global managed SD-WAN services market, which Frost & Sullivan projects will reach nearly $6.4 billion by 2023.

Intel acquires Rivet Networks for Killer Wi-Fi 6 modules

Intel has acquired Rivet Networks, a start-up offering Wi-Fi and Ethernet modules. Financial terms were not disclosed. Rivet is based in Austin, Texas.

Rivet's products maximize Wi-Fi bandwidth utilization and optimize the wireless network connection. Rivet's products can also utilize the combination of Ethernet and Wi-Fi to prioritize traffic over both connections. Its product line includes the Rivet Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650, a module based on Intel's Wi-Fi 6 chipset. The Killer AX1650 is a 2×2, WiFi 6 module that supports 160 MHz channels and Bluetooth 5.1.  It delivers up to 2.4 Gbps of throughput with low latencies.

The Rivet team will join Intel's Wireless Solutions Group within the Client Computing Group. Intel notes that it has taken a leading role in the development and testing of 801.11ax (Wi-Fi 6).



Nokia's 5G hits 4.7 Gbps peak with 8X 100 MHZ aggregation

Nokia achieved 5G speeds of up to 4.7 Gbps in tests in its Over-the-Air (OTA) network in Dallas, Texas.

The tests combined eight 100 MHz channels of millimeter wave spectrum on the 28 GHz and 39GHz bands, providing 800 MHz of bandwidth, and 40 MHz of LTE spectrum using the Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) functionality available on Nokia’s AirScale solution. EN-DC allows devices to connect simultaneously to 5G and LTE networks, transmitting and receiving data across both air-interface technologies. This means devices can achieve a higher throughput than when connecting to 5G or LTE alone. The speeds were achieved on both 5G cloud-based (vRAN) and classic baseband configurations.

Samsung plans additional 5nm capacity at new fab in Pyeongtaek

Samsung Electronics will boost foundry capacity at the company's new production line in Pyeongtaek, Korea. The new foundry line will focus on EUV-based 5 nanometer (nm) and below process technology. Construction began this month and is expected to be in full operation in the second half of 2021.

Samsung recently added a new EUV-dedicated V1 line to its fab in Hwaseong, Korea. Initial mass production of the EUV-based 7nm process started in early 2019.  The company is on track to start mass production of 5nm EUV process in the Hwaseong fab in the second half of this year.

“This new production facility will expand Samsung’s manufacturing capabilities for sub-5nm process and enable us to rapidly respond to the increasing demand for EUV-based solutions,” said Dr. ES Jung, President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics. “We remain committed to addressing the needs of our customers through active investments and recruitment of talents. This will enable us to continue to break new ground while driving robust growth for Samsung’s foundry business.”

With the addition of the Pyeongtaek fab, Samsung will have a total of seven foundry production lines located in South Korea and the United States, comprised of six 12-inch lines and one 8-inch line.

IP Infusion's new Open SD-Edge enables uCPE based on DANOS

IP Infusion introduced its Open SD-Edge platform for universal Customer Premise Equipment (uCPE) based on DANOS-Vyatta edition software, which is widely deployed at scale for multiple, white box use cases in AT&T’s production network.

DANOS is a carrier-targeted network operating system (NOS) project hosted by the Linux Foundation. By pre-integrating with the FRR (FRRouting) and DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) projects, DANOS facilitates evaluations and Proof of Concepts for VNFs and applications.

IP Infusion said its Open SD-Edge platform supports a range of uCPE use cases and delivers a platform for operational simplicity, agile deployment of virtualized services and lower CAPEX, leading to reduced total cost of ownership. It includes white box hardware, DANOS-Vyatta edition, and hosts third-party Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) for SD-WAN, routing, VPN, and firewall support for VNFs on a general-purpose appliance. This eliminates the need for stacks of proprietary equipment and software that require specialized IT skills to install, configure, and maintain.

Under an agreement with AT&T, IP Infusion is the value-added integrator of DANOS-Vyatta edition and has the rights to sell DANOS-Vyatta edition as a commercial solution and provide ongoing support for carrier customers who need additional integration expertise. It also allows provides the flexibility for users to choose from multiple hardware vendors.

DANOS-Vyatta edition now covers cell site router (CSR) and uCPE applications in a common platform for both wide area and local area networking. The three new Open SD-Edge use cases planned for delivery in 2020 are:

  • Virtual SD-Edge – General availability in Q2’20 - available in virtual form-factor to securely extend VPN to the public or private cloud and deliver scalable WAN, Security and CG-NAT functions.
  • Branch SD-Edge – General availability in Q3’20 - available in a white-box or virtual form-factor for securely interconnecting branch offices and migrating workloads to the cloud.
  • Universal SD-Edge – General availability in Q4’20 - cloud managed uCPE for enterprise/branch connectivity including security, SD-WAN and WAN optimization use cases, with the flexibility to add VNF services from third parties.

The Cloud Services Router and uCPE solutions are now available for demonstration in the Azure cloud marketplace and as a VNF (VM) for server environments.
