The three big Chinese telcos so far are cautious in their 5G CAPEX forecasts, says Edison Lee, Head of Telecom Research for Jeffries, in a Bloomberg video.

Meanwhile, the market is looking for increased dividends but the carriers are cautious here as well.

DE-CIX offers 400-GE access to its Frankfurt Exchange

DE-CIX has begun offering 400-GE access technology to its flagship Internet Exchange in Frankfurt, Germany, which handles the highest peak exchange traffic in the world.

DE-CIX first introduced 100-GE access in 2013.

The expansion is being realized on the DE-CIX Apollon platform, which uses Nokia routers as one core component. The 400-GE Nokia line cards are now available in DE-CIX Frankfurt.

DE-CIX said it will make 400-GE available at further DE-CIX locations over time.

Colt employs Cisco segment routing and eVPNs for 5G backhaul

Colt will deploy Cisco’s segment routing and Ethernet VPN (eVPN) based architecture to deliver its wholesale 5G backhaul.

Colt said that by allowing MSPs to share connectivity costs while maintaining individual service level agreements (SLAs), its 5G backhaul will help its MSP customers deliver 5G services to end-users faster and with lower subscription costs.

“We are focused on providing best-in-class, high bandwidth, on-demand connectivity solutions to meet our customers’ ever-growing business needs and the arrival of 5G presents exciting opportunities,” said Peter Coppens, Vice President, Product Portfolio at Colt. “We have worked closely with Cisco to design a network architecture that is simple to operate, highly available, and capable of delivering the innovative network services that are required for 5G.”

Cisco’s programmable-routing architecture for advanced 5G service enablement will enable the Colt IQ Network to be extended to customers directly using standards-based APIs. Source Photonics inaugurates fab in Jintan, China

Source Photonics inaugurated its new fabrication facility in Jintan, China.

The new Jintan facility will double Source Photonics’ capacity of Indium Phosphide (InP) lasers and related components. The fabrication plant includes a fully integrated laser chip production capability, high-precision TO operations, and an advanced R&D facility to support the company’s global technology roadmap and regional customers. Its chip capabilities include base wafer, regrowth, and chip processing, while its TO operations will support the advanced requirements emerging for high-speed PON and 5G markets.

The Jintan facility augments the company’s existing fab in Hsinchu in Taiwan, which has itself doubled its output over the past three years. Recent investments in the Taiwan facility include significant expansion in MOCVD and advanced coating technologies. The Taiwan facility also recently completed expansions to support transceiver assembly in support of customers’ demands for resiliency in their supply chains. Source Photonics said its manufacturing prowess is a key advantage in the optical communications industry in which a majority of manufacturers are fabless.

3M intros Expanded Beam Ferrule and Connector System

Earlier this month, 3M introduced an Expanded Beam Optical Connector System for single mode and multimode interconnects in next-gen data centers.

“We’ve reimagined fiber optic connectors,” said Nick Stacey, Ph.D., global laboratory manager at 3M. “Our ferrule and connector technology is designed to reduce cleaning requirements, to provide design flexibility and to enable the performance necessary for next-generation optical deployment.”

The 3M Expanded Beam Optical Ferrule uses a non-contact optical coupling in contrast to the more traditional physical contact methods. Together with the connector design, this helps to provide reduced sensitivity to dust, helping maintain signal integrity, and reducing the need for, and cost of, maintenance and cleaning.

It is available in single mode (1310 nm) and multimode (850 nm) versions. In single mode, insertion loss specification is <0 .70="" and="" db="" is="" loss="" return="">55 dB. In multimode, insertion loss specification is <0 .30="" and="" db="" is="" loss="" return="">25 dB. The configurable and scalable connector design can accommodate anywhere from 12 fibers to 192 fibers. The simple, but robust hermaphroditic component geometry design, with low part count, can be mated and re-mated reliably with a simple LC-style latch. The performance enables architects and engineers to deploy the technology in multilink data center applications.

Comcast launches streaming service for its Internet-only customers

Comcast launched Xfinity Flex, a new service that provides its Xfinity Internet-only customers the ability to use their television and voice control to manage all of the connected devices in their home.

Xfinity Flex offers more than 10,000 online movies and TV shows—including live streaming TV—from ESPN3, Xumo, Pluto, Tubi TV, Cheddar, YouTube, etc. The Xfinity Flex box features an integrated guide and voice control, enabling customers to easily browse and access programming across apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Showtime, rent and purchase movies and shows from the digital store, access their digital lockers across platforms by pairing their account with Movies Anywhere, or listen to music from Pandora, iHeartRadio, and XITE. And

T-Mobile US tests LTE fixed broadband service

T-Mobile US is piloting a fixed Internet home service delivered over its LTE network.

T-Mobile is inviting a limited group of T-Mobile customers in rural and underserved to test the service.

The T-Mobile Home Internet fixed service expects to deliver speeds of around 50 Mbps. The pilot service is priced at $50 per month and has no data cap.

T-Mobile said that due to LTE network and spectrum capacity constraints, the pilot is limited by invitation-only to existing customers in specific areas, with the goal of reaching 50,000 households by the end of the year – or slightly less than 0.04% of U.S. households.

If T-Mobile’s pending merger with Sprint is approved, the company said the New T-Mobile will cover more than half of U.S. households with 5G broadband service – in excess of 100 Mbps – by 2024.

“Two weeks ago, I laid out our plans for home broadband with the New T-Mobile. Now, we’re already hard at work building toward that future,” said John Legere, CEO of T-Mobile. “We’re walking the walk and laying the foundation for a world where we can take the fight to Big Cable on behalf of consumers and offer real choice, competition and savings to Americans nationwide.”

Broadcom samples Automotive Multilayer Ethernet Switches

Broadcom has begun sampling a new family of automotive multilayer Ethernet switches designed for time-sensitive networking (TSN) requirements of autonomous and connected vehicles. In addition, Broadcom has begun shipping production quantities of its automotive 1000BASE-T1 PHY transceiver device for Gigabit Ethernet on single-pair UTP cables for in-car networking applications.

Broadcom said its new BCM8956X switches, which are offered in various port configurations with and with integrated 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 PHYs, allow customers to have scalable and cost-effective designs for automotive gateway, ADAS and infotainment applications.

The integrated PCIe interface provides high bandwidth connectivity to the host processor, while the on-chip Layer 3 flow accelerator offloads the host processor from compute-intensive routing operations. Furthermore, the BCM8956X is packed with advanced multilevel security features including dedicated hardware security module (HSM) block for line rate encryption, L2 anti-hack, deep packet inspection, and intrusion prevention reporting.

Broadcom's BCM8988X is a 1000BASE-T1 PHY with integrated BroadR-Secure functionality, which authenticates each packet transmitted and received on either end of the link using secure keys. The company said its BCM8988X has undergone rigorous IEEE 802.3bp compliance testing by the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL). The device has passed critical IEEE 802.3bp PHY compliance requirements test for which Broadcom is sharing the test reports with its lead customers. The BCM8988x 1000BASE-T1 PHY incorporates DSP and AFE technology, enabling superior EMC and EMI performance, fast link-up time, low power consumption and robust signal integrity over UTP cables.

SK Telecom applies Quantum Cryptography to network security

SK Telecom has applied a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) developed by ID Quantique of Switzerland to its 5G authentication center (AuC). QRNG is a device that constantly generates “quantum random numbers,” which creates strong keys that are not biased and cannot be predicted. SK Telecom said it plans to apply the same quantum random number technique to its 4G network as well.

Next month, SK Telecom will also apply ID Quantique’s Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology to the Seoul-Daejeon section – the most data traffic-concentrated section in Korea - of its 5G and LTE networks, to strengthen the security of 5G and LTE data transmission and reception. QKD provides ultimate cryptographic security based on the laws of quantum mechanics. It enables two parties to produce a shared random secret key known only to them, which can then be used to encrypt and decrypt messages.

SK Telecom invested US$65 million in ID Quantique in February 2018.

SK Telecom also noted its pivotal role in global standardization of QKD and QRNG technologies at ITU-T. In February 2019, SK Telecom’s two new technologies related to QKD have been selected as work items by ITU-T’s Study Group 17 (SG17), which coordinates security-related work across all ITU-T Study Groups. Combining these two work items with the two on-going work items on QKD and QRNG technologies it proposed in July 2018, SK Telecom is currently leading a total of four meaningful work items in SG 17. In addition, Sim Dong-hi, a delegate from SK Telecom,  is serving as associate-rapporteur on quantum technology in SG17.

“As security emerges as one of the most important issues in the 5G era, SK Telecom is determined to provide the most secure 5G network and focus on expanding the ecosystem by developing quantum cryptography technologies,” said Park Jin-hyo, the Chief Technology Officer of SK Telecom.

SK Telecom's Mobile Edge Computing box cuts 5G latency a further 60%

SK Telecom has disclosed that its custom Mobile Edge Computing Open Platform cuts latency by up to 60% when deployed at a 5G base station. 

The carrier says Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology will be widely used for services that require ultra-low latency such as AR/VR services, cloud gaming services, autonomous driving & fleet management, real-time live broadcasting.

SK Telecom also plans to open its 5G MEC Platform to allow its enterprise customers to offer related services. The company will provide open Application Programming Interfaces to enable companies to easily develop MEC-based 5G services. Through APIs, developers will be provided with diverse data and functions.

“By opening up the ‘5G Mobile Edge Computing Platform’, SK Telecom will secure the basis for expanding the MEC-related ecosystem and accelerating the release of 5G services,” said Park Jin-hyo, Chief Technology Officer of SK Telecom. “SK Telecom will join hands with diverse companies throughout the globe to boost the adoption of MEC-based services.”

SK Telecom and Samsung hit 2.65 Gbps with 4G+5G dual connectivity

SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics completed a network device interoperability test based on Dual Connectivity technology that used both 4G and 5G networks provided by Samsung's Networks Business.

The test, which was carried out at Samsung Electronics located in Suwon, Korea, used Samsung's commercial 4G and 5G NR end-to-end networks solutions which have been provided to the operator's current service. In addition, companies used Samsung's virtual core (vCore) that supports simultaneous 4G and 5G as well as its Galaxy S10 5G, Samsung's first 5G smartphone which was unveiled last month.

During the test, both companies have successfully achieved 2.65Gbps in data speeds on the 5G smartphone, combining both 1.5Gbps in 5G using 3.5GHz frequency (100MHz bandwidth) with 1.15Gbps in LTE using 1.8GHz, 2.1GHz, and 2.6GHz frequencies (65MHz bandwidth) all of which are for commercial use by SK Telecom.

SK Telecom calculates that it will be able to boost the overall transmission data speed by 80% by leveraging the 4G and 5G dual connectivity.

Dual connectivity is also known as 'E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC)' based on the 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standard.

Orange migrates LH network to photonic control plane from Nokia

Orange has completed the migration of the Orange Long-Distance network to a new photonic control plane developed by Nokia.

Orange says the migration, which involved distributing network intelligence to different equipment, was implemented successfully without any impact on Orange’s customers, after several months of preparation. During this time, the entire long-distance network (over 18,000 km and 330 nodes), was simulated.

Orange’s French, European and Asian networks are underpinned by the Nokia 1830 PSS WDM platform, which can transport up to 20 Tbps over long-haul distances. These platforms have now been switched to software-managed operations, allowing the deployment of on-demand activation services and automatic recovery control via Artificial Intelligence technologies if there is an outage.

CBRS Alliance to support for 5G spectrum sharing in the 3.5GHz band

The CBRS Alliance, which is the industry organization focused on driving the development, commercialization, and adoption of "OnGo" shared spectrum solutions, is working on a new release of specifications that will support OnGo over 5G. Specifically, CBRS Alliance Release 3 will address support for 5G deployments using shared spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band.

The new specifications from the CBRS Alliance will complement 5G New Radio (5G NR), the new air interface developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to support the wide variety of 5G services, devices, and deployments. The latest release of 5G NR is expected to support operations in Band 48 and will improve the performance, flexibility, scalability and efficiency of mobile networks while enabling industries to get the most out of the available spectrum.

“Utilizing the CBRS band can be a key enabler for making 5G deployments possible. The Alliance is hard at work developing technical specifications to ensure that OnGo supports 5G applications as seamlessly as traditional LTE services,” said Gary Boudreau, Chair of the CBRS Alliance’s Technical Working Group. “The specifications in development include addressing coexistence requirements to ensure seamless interoperability between LTE and 5G NR in and out of Band 48, certificate-based authentication, and more.”

Completion of Release 3 by the CBRS Alliance is expected to conclude in Q4 2019, enabling OnGo 5G service availability in 2020.

DOCOMO targets 5G game streaming in Japan

NTT DOCOMO announced an equity investment in cloud gaming pioneer Hatch Entertainment Ltd, provider of the world's first made-for-5G game streaming service in Finland.

DOCOMO has begun supporting Hatch's game streaming service in Japan, effective February 13.

Hatch currently streams rich, full-featured games over Wi-Fi or 4G networks in the Nordic countries plus the UK and Ireland. Hatch offers more than 100 games that are ready to play instantly, requiring no download, in-game paywall or costly specialized hardware. Users simply download Hatch's application from Google Play to their device to use the service for a flat monthly fee of JPY 550 (tax included).

Under the DOCOMO-Hatch partnership, customers in Japan will log into Hatch with their DOCOMO d ACCOUNTTM to play games and challenge other gamers on global leaderboards. Hatch games will also be available via the DOCOMO TV Terminal set-top box device that customers control with their smartphones.

Going forward, DOCOMO and Hatch plans to leverage the extra-high-speed, large-capacity, low-latency and massive-device connectivity of 5G for gaming. DOCOMO plans to launch its commercial 5G service in 2020.

LTE accounts for 47% of cellular connections worldwide

Approximately 4 billion connections worldwide are now LTE, representing 47% of all cellular connections, according to the trade group 5G Americas and Ovum.

North America’s market share for LTE at 82 percent exceeds all other world regions at the fourth quarter of 2018; the next highest world regions are Oceania; Eastern and South Eastern Asia with LTE share of 67 percent followed by Western Europe at 52 percent. Latin America and the Caribbean had significant growth of LTE market share to 40 percent, up from 29 percent at the end of 2017. Market share represents the percentage of mobile wireless connections that are LTE technology versus all other mobile cellular technologies.



“While the 5G market reality and innovation are upon us, the number of LTE connections continue to grow on 637 commercial networks worldwide, as well as the evolution to advanced LTE networks for the Internet of Things, Gigabit LTE speeds and new methods for spectrum use and sharing,” stated Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas.

QTS deploys Ciena's Waveserver Ai

QTS Realty Trust, which operates more than 6 million square feet of owned mega-scale data center space throughout North America, will deploy Ciena's Waveserver Ai platform to support growing bandwidth demand and meet wire-speed encryption requirements for highly secure in-flight data protection.

This deployment will also support QTS’ recently announced Switchboard interconnection platform, which enables self-service ordering and fast, one-to-many provisioning of local, metro, carrier, long-haul, and cloud services via a single port.

Portworx lands $27 million for cloud-native storage and management

Portworx, a start-up based in Los Altos, California, announced $27 million in Series C funding to support its cloud-native storage and data management solutions.

Portworx reduces storage, compute and infrastructure costs for running mission-critical multi-cloud applications while promising zero downtime or data loss. Major customers include GE Digital, Lufthansa Systems, HPE and thirty members of the Fortune Global 2000 or federal agencies.

The oversubscribed funding round was co-led by Sapphire Ventures and the ventures arm of Mubadala Investment Company, with support from existing investors Mayfield Fund and GE Ventures, and new financing from Cisco Investments, HPE, and NetApp. The company has raised $55 million to date.

Google's Stadia cloud gaming service promises low-latency

Google unveiled its Stadia cloud gaming service at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

Stadia is a cloud streaming service "for all types of devices capable of running a Chrome browser" and not requiring a gaming console.

Stadia will launch later this year in the U.S., Canada, UK, and Europe. Stadia will support up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS. An Internet connection of at least 25 Mbps downstream is required. Eventually, Stadia expects to support up to 8K resolutions and 120 fps. In addition to the 4K 60 FPS connection to the player, the Stadia network can also deliver a 4K 60 FPS stream to YouTube so that the action can be saved and shared as a video.

To deliver the service, Google will leverage its global backbone and its 8,500 edge node locations around the world. Google is working with AMD to produce a 10.7 teraflop GPU that will be custom servers its data centers and edge locations.



Tencent Cloud builds a global ecosystem for gaming

Tencent is showcasing its global cloud ecosystem at this week's Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

Tencent Cloud's global cloud infrastructure currently operates 53 availability zones in 25 countries and regions worldwide, offering high concurrency, rapid elastic expansion, anti-DDoS protection, and solutions tailored to various game genres.

Tencent highlighted its Game Multimedia Engine (GME), which provides multiplayer voice chat, voice messaging, voice-to-text conversion and features such as 3D positional voice for gaming and other applications, and Global Application Acceleration Platform (GAAP), which reduces latency and achieves industry-leading performance for real-time interactive games and applications, especially those that serve many concurrent users across long geographical distance.

Both GME and GAAP have successfully served numerous popular games to date. One of the most well-known titles that has adopted GAAP is Tencent's Arena of Valor, the second-highest-grossing free-to-play title in 2018 after Fortnite. PUBG MOBILE, winner of the 2018 Joystick Awards' Mobile Game of the Year and King of Avalon, which has over 60 million registered users globally are another two titles that have adopted GAAP to improve user experience.

Tencent's solutions ensure quality and consistent gameplay for gamers worldwide, including in China, where Honor of Kings and PUBG MOBILE enjoy immense popularity. The Chinese online game market boasts over 500 million active players and is expected to grow to US$42 billion, or 27% of the global market, within the foreseeable future. Tencent Cloud's ecosystem provides unique access to this market, offering seamless integration with platforms and services from other arms of Tencent's business.

Two of these, Tencent Games and social media platform WeChat, will also showcase their offerings for the gaming sector at GDC.

GSMA: China’s mobile ecosystem equivalent to 5.5% of China’s GDP

China’s mobile ecosystem added RMB5.2 trillion ($750 billion) in value to the country’s economy last year, equivalent to 5.5 percent of China’s GDP in 20181, according to a new GSMA report.

Highlights:

  • China is the largest mobile market in the world, home to almost 1.2 billion unique mobile subscribers2 at the end of 2018, representing 82 percent of the country’s population;
  • More than two thirds (69 percent) of mobile connections in China3 are smartphones, with smartphone adoption expected to reach 88 percent of connections by 2025;
  • 77 percent of China’s connections are currently running on 4G networks – 4G adoption will peak in the coming years before falling as consumers migrate to next-generation mobile services;
  • China is set to become one of the world’s leading 5G markets with 460 million 5G connections forecast by 2025, which would account for 28 percent of China’s total connections by this point;
  • The RMB5.2 trillion ($750 billion) economic contribution by China’s mobile ecosystem in 2018 is forecast to grow to RMB6 trillion ($870 billion) by 2023;
  • China’s mobile ecosystem, directly and indirectly, supported 8.5 million jobs in 2018 and made a tax contribution to the public finances of government of RMB583 billion ($84 billion).
  • The number of licensed cellular IoT connections in China stood at 672 million at the end of 2018, supporting various industrial and smart cities applications.

The new report ‘The Mobile Economy China 2019’ is authored by GSMA Intelligence, the research arm of the GSMA.

China Telecom's service revenue grew 5.9% in 2018

China Telecom reported 2018 operating revenues of RMB377.1 billion, of which, service revenues amounted to RMB350.4 billion, representing an increase of 5.9% compared to 2017. EBITDA reached RMB104.2 billion, representing an increase of 2.0% over the same period last year. Net profit amounted to RMB21.2 billion, representing an increase
of 13.9% compared to last year, while basic earnings per share were RMB0.262, achieving rapid growth. Capital expenditure was RMB74.9 billion, representing a decrease of 15.5% compared to last year, the third consecutive annual decline.

Samsung debuts "Flashbolt" High Bandwidth Memory- 3.2 Gbps per pin

Samsung Electronics Co. announced its new High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2E) which promises to deliver the highest DRAM performance levels for use in next-generation supercomputers, graphics systems, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The new Flashbolt DRAM is the industry’s first HBM2E to deliver a 3.2 Gbps data transfer speed per pin, which is 33 percent faster than the previous-generation HBM2.

Flashbolt has a density of 16Gb per die, double the capacity of the previous generation. With these improvements, a single Samsung HBM2E package will offer a 410 gigabytes-per-second (GBps) data bandwidth and 16GB of memory.

“Flashbolt’s industry-leading performance will enable enhanced solutions for next-generation data centers, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and graphics applications,” said Jinman Han, senior vice president of Memory Product Planning and Application Engineering Team at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our premium DRAM offering, and improve our ‘high-performance, high capacity, and low power’ memory segment to meet market demand.”

Huawei adopts Open Rack in its cloud data centers

Huawei Technologies will adopt Open Rack in its new public cloud data centers worldwide.

The Open Rack initiative proposed by the Open Compute Project (OCP) seeks to redefine the data center rack and is one of the most promising developments in the scale computing environment. It is the first rack standard that is designed for data centers, integrating the rack into the data center infrastructure, a holistic design process that considers the interdependence of everything from the power grid to the gates in the chips on each motherboard. Adopted by some of the world’s largest hyperscale internet service providers such as Facebook, Google and Microsoft, Open Rack is helping to lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and improve energy efficiency in the scale compute space.

DataGryd upgrades its data center at 60 Hudson in NYC

DataGryd, which is a leading data center provider in New York City, has selected Clune Construction to build out its MegaSuite 6 facility at the 60 Hudson Street building in Manhattan. The companies said the facility will be transformed into New York City’s most modern and efficient high-density, high-performance data center.

DataGryd’s MegaSuite 6 is expected to be ready for occupancy by the third quarter of 2019.

Cohesity and SoftBank form joint venture for Japan

Cohesity, which specializes in hyperconverged secondary storage, has formed a joint venture with SoftBank Corp. to offer services in Japan. Secondary data includes data used for backups, archives, analytics, testing and development and other workloads and comprises 80 percent of an enterprise’s total data volume.

The joint venture operates under the name Cohesity Japan KK (“Cohesity Japan”). SoftBank and SoftBank C&S Corp. will distribute and resell Cohesity solutions in Japan, along with other partners including Networld Corporation and ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation. Solutions from Cohesity are available today to Japanese enterprises.

Aurora supercomputer to break exaFLOP barrier in 2021

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced plans to build Aurora - the first supercomputer with a performance of one exaFLOP in the United States - at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago by 2021.

The contract,  which is valued at more than $500 million, was awarded to Intel and Cray Inc. as a sub-contractor.

One exaFLOP of performance is equal to a “quintillion” floating point computations per second.

Intel said the foundation of the Aurora supercomputer will be new technologies designed specifically for the convergence of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing at extreme computing scale. These include a future generation of the Intel Xeon Scalable processor, Intel’s Xe compute architecture, a future generation of Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, and Intel’s One API software. Aurora will use Cray’s next-generation supercomputer system, code-named “Shasta,” which will comprise more than 200 cabinets and include Cray's SlingshotTM high-performance scalable interconnect and the Shasta software stack optimized for Intel architecture.

“Achieving exascale is imperative, not only to better the scientific community but also to better the lives of everyday Americans,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry. “Aurora and the next generation of exascale supercomputers will apply HPC and AI technologies to areas such as cancer research, climate modeling and veterans’ health treatments. The innovative advancements that will be made with exascale will have an incredibly significant impact on our society.”

“There is tremendous scientific benefit to our nation that comes from collaborations like this one with the Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratory, and industry partners Intel and Cray,” said Argonne National Laboratory Director Paul Kearns. “Argonne’s Aurora system is built for next-generation artificial intelligence and will accelerate scientific discovery by combining high-performance computing and artificial intelligence to address real world problems, such as improving extreme weather forecasting, accelerating medical treatments, mapping the human brain, developing new materials and further understanding the universe – and that is just the beginning.”

OneWeb prepares to launch its LEO constellation

OneWeb, which is planning to deploy a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites, secured $1.25 billion in new capital, enabling it to start mass production of satellites through its joint venture with Airbus. This round was led by SoftBank, Grupo Salinas, Qualcomm, and the Government of Rwanda. OneWeb has now raised to $3.4 billion to date.

OneWeb said it will now "embark on the largest satellite launch campaign in history." Satellites will be built at its new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Exploration Park, Florida. The first launch occured on February 27th.  Starting in Q4, OneWeb will begin monthly launches of more than 30 satellites at a time, creating an initial constellation of 650 satellites to enable full global coverage. Further phases are planned.

"This latest funding round, our largest to date, makes OneWeb’s service inevitable and is a vote of confidence from our core investor base in our business model and the OneWeb value proposition," said Adrian Steckel, CEO of OneWeb. USB4 promises 40G over new cables

A new USB4 specification under final review promises to be a significant update to the existing USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 architectures.

USB4 is based on the Thunderbolt protocol specification recently contributed by Intel.

Key characteristics USB4:

  • Two-lane operation using existing USB Type-C cables and up to 40 Gbps operation over 40 Gbps certified cables
  • Multiple data and display protocols to efficiently share the total available bandwidth over the bus
  • Backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3

Over 50 companies are actively participating in the final stages of review of the draft specification. Publication of the final spec is expected around the middle of 2019.

IDC: Worldwide server market remains robust

Vendor revenue in the worldwide server market increased 12.6% year over year to $23.6 billion during the fourth quarter of 2018 (4Q18), according to a new report from IDC. Worldwide server shipments increased 5.0% year over year to just under 3.0 million units in 4Q18.

"Reduced demand from hyperscale companies created downward pressure on worldwide server market growth rates during the quarter," said Sebastian Lagana, research manager, Infrastructure Platforms and Technologies at IDC. "This was offset by increased server sales to enterprise customers and higher average selling prices (ASPs). Enterprises are buying richly configured servers to support resource intensive workloads, resulting in higher ASPs and pushing revenue growth higher than growth from unit shipments."



Highlights:

  • The overall server market continues to experience robust demand with 4Q18 marking the fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth and its highest total revenue in a single quarter ever. 
  • Volume server revenue increased by 17.8% to $19.0 billion, while midrange server revenue grew 30.3% to $2.5 billion. High-end systems declined 28.3% to $2.1 billion.
  • Tied for the number one position in the worldwide server market during 4Q18 were Dell Inc., at 18.7% revenue share, and HPE/New H3C Group, with 17.8% revenue share, growing 20.4% and 10.5% year to year respectively. 
  • IBM was the third-ranked server supplier during the quarter capturing 8.3% of total server revenues. IBM's performance during the quarter excludes sales generated through the company's recently established partnership with Inspur Power Systems. 
  • Inspur/Inspur Power Systems and Lenovo tied for fourth with revenue shares of 6.6% and 6.2% respectively. Inspur/Inspur Power Systems increased its revenue 70.7% year over year and Lenovo increased its revenue 33.8% year over year. The ODM Direct group of vendors accounted for 20.1% of total revenue, up 11.6% year over year to $4.7 billion. This was an uncharacteristically low growth rate for this group of companies. 
  • Dell led the worldwide server market in terms of unit shipments, accounting for 19.4% of all units shipped during the quarter.

AT&T launches API Marketplace based on Ribbon's Kandy

A new AT&T API Marketplace has launched to provide pre-packaged software code for business customers to embed in their websites and applications, enabling simpler, faster and more efficient ways to communicate with customers in near real-time.

The Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) enable capabilities such as click-to-connect voice, video and text as well as 2-factor authentication, conferencing, virtual directories and contact center. For example, businesses could use an app to embed a click-to-chat button on their website to give customers an easier way to connect with support representatives.

TDC signs with Ericsson for 5G

Denmark's TDC has awarded a 5G network upgrade contract to Ericsson spanning TDC’s entire RAN and core network. The contract also cover R&D collaboration for driving TDC's "Digital Denmark" ambitions - to empower a new digital economy era and enhance Denmark’s reputation as a digital leader - by helping mobile broadband subscribers, enterprises, industries, and society to capitalize on 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Industry 4.0. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Under the project, Ericsson will modernize TDC’s entire Radio Access Network (RAN) network with the latest solutions from Ericsson Radio System, while TDC’s core network will be modernized with Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Cloud Core solution. Roll-out of Ericsson 5G New Radio (NR) hardware and software products will begin in 2019 in line with 5G licensing obligations. TDC will make 5G available to selected customers under pilot testing from mid-2019, with actual 5G network roll-out expected to be initiated in October – pending the anticipated approval and availability of licensed 5G spectrum.

TDC is targeting the end of 2020 to provide nationwide 5G coverage in Denmark.

The deal will also see Ericsson working in partnership with TDC to upgrade its existing 4G LTE network.

The companies have also signed a five-year managed services contract, centered on the Artificial Intelligence (AI)- and automation-driven Ericsson Operations Engine, which will see Ericsson operate TDC’s network from September 2019.

Germany's TelemaxX deploys Ciena for Ethernet Business Services

TelemaxX Telekommunikation GmbH, a leading data center provider in Germany, recently deployed sCiena’s Packet Networking portfolio to transform its network and ensure a smooth rollout of Ethernet Business Services (EBS).

TelemaxX manages five data centers across the region of Karlsruhe. AWS to offer NVIDIA T4 Tensor Core GPUs

Amazon Web Services will begin offering NVIDIA T4 Tensor Core GPUs as part of its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) G4 instances.

The new G4 instances are aimed at AI services. Through AWS Marketplace, customers will be able to pair the G4 instances with NVIDIA GPU acceleration software, including NVIDIA CUDA-X AI libraries for accelerating deep learning, machine learning and data analytics.

T4 will also be supported by Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes, making it possible to deploy, manage and scale containerized applications on EC2 G4 GPU instances using Kubernetes.

“NVIDIA and AWS have worked together for a long time to help customers run compute-intensive AI workloads in the cloud and create incredible new AI solutions,” said Matt Garman, vice president of Compute Services at AWS. “With our new T4-based G4 instances, we’re making it even easier and more cost-effective for customers to accelerate their machine learning inference and graphics-intensive applications.”

T4 will join other Amazon EC2 instances featuring NVIDIA GPUs, providing developers and data scientists with the most sophisticated compute resources available to support a variety of customer needs.

Microsoft and Facebook collaborate on co-packaged optics

Microsoft and Facebook have established a Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) Collaboration with the goal of encouraging common design elements for bridging optics and ASICs.

The collaboration intends to provide open specifications for design elements, including the electrical signaling interface, optical standard, optical module management interface and reliability requirements. When complete, the open specifications will enable the industry to develop a set of solutions involving switch and ASIC manufacturers, optics suppliers, CMs and others that will create the final package which can then be attached to the switch PCB. The collaboration has targeted the 51T switch generation as the tipping point for industry adoption of co-packaged optics.

"The Co-Packaged Optics Collaboration will provide a customer-driven, system-level view of requirements for co-packaged optics," said Katharine Schmidtke, director, Technology Sourcing, Facebook, responsible for the company's optical technology strategy. "By sharing the specifications, we aim to develop a diverse and innovative supplier ecosystem."

OCP 2019: Edgecore debuts "Minipack" Switch for 100G and 400G

At OCP Summit 2019, Edgecore Networks introduced an open modular switch for 100G and 400G networking that conforms to the Minipack Fabric Switch design contributed by Facebook to the Open Compute Project (OCP).

Minipack is a disaggregated whitebox system providing a flexible mix of 100GbE and 400GbE ports up to a system capacity of 12.8Tbps.

The Minipack switch can support a mix of 100G and 400G Ethernet interfaces up to a maximum of 128x100G or 32x400G ports. Minipack is based on Broadcom StrataXGS Tomahawk 3 Switch Series silicon capable of line rate 12.8Tbps Layer2 and Layer3 switching.

The Minipack front panel has eight slots for port interface modules (PIM). The first PIM options available for the Edgecore Minipack switch are the PIM-16Q with 16x100G QSFP28 ports, and the PIM-4DD with 4x400G QSFP-DD ports. The Minipack modular switch is a 4U form factor, power optimized for data center deployments, and includes hot-swappable redundant power supplies and fans for high availability.

Edgecore said its Minipack AS8000 Switch enables network operators to select disaggregated NOS and SDN software options from commercial partners and open source communities to address different use cases and operational requirements. Edgecore has ported and validated Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC), the OCP open source software platform, on the Minipack AS8000 Switch as an open source option for high capacity data center fabrics. In addition, Cumulus Networks announced the availability of its Cumulus Linux operating system for the Edgecore Minipack switch.

The Minipack AS8000 Switch with PIM-16Q 100G QSFP28 interface modules will be available from Edgecore resellers and integrators worldwide in Q2. PIM-4DD 400G QSFP-DD interface modules will be available in Q3. SONiC open source software, including platform drivers for the Edgecore Minipack AS8000 Switch, are available from the SONiC GitHub.

OCP 2019: Netronome unveils 50GbE SmartNICs

Netronome unveiled its Agilio CX 50GbE SmartNICs in OCP Mezzanine 2.0 form factor with line-rate advanced cryptography and 2GB onboard DDR memory.

The Agilio CX SmartNIC platform fully and transparently offloads virtual switch, virtual router, eBPF and P4-based datapath processing for networking functions such as overlays, security, load balancing and telemetry, enabling cloud and SDN-enabled compute and storage servers to free up critical server CPU cores for application processing while delivering significantly higher performance.

Netronome said its new SmartNIC reduces tail latency significantly enabling high-performance Web 2.0 applications to be deployed in cost and energy-efficient servers. With advanced Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL)-based cryptography support at line-rate and up to two million stateful sessions per SmartNIC, web and data storage servers in hyperscale environments can now be secured tighter than ever before, preventing hacking of networks and precious user data.

Deployable in OCP Yosemite servers, the Agilio CX 50GbE SmartNICs implement a standards-based and open advanced buffer management scheme enabled by the unique many-core multithreaded processing memory-based architecture of the Netronome Network Flow Processor (NFP) silicon. This improves application performance and enables hyperscale operators to maintain high levels of service level agreements (SLAs). Dynamic eBPF-based programming and hardware acceleration enables intelligent scaling of networking workloads across multiple host CPU cores, improving server efficiency. The solution also enhances security and data center efficiencies by offloading TLS, a widely deployed protocol used for encryption and authentication of applications that require data to be securely exchanged over a network.

Agilio CX 50GbE SmartNICs in OCP Mezzanine 2.0 form factor are sampling today and include the generally available NFP-5000 silicon. The production version of the board and software is expected in the second half of this year.

OCP 2019: Ixia and Marvell conduct 12.8Tbps 400GE test

Keysight Technologies announced a joint demonstration of Ixia’s AresOne-400 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) test system and the Marvell Prestera CX 8580 Ethernet switch.

The Marvell Prestera CX 8580 switch, a 12.8Tbps, 256x 50G device, is part of a new family of switches from Marvell that offers workflow visibility and analytics with its Storage Aware Flow Engine (SAFE) technology and a reduction in network layers leveraging its high radix switch core technology known as FASTER.

“We are excited to showcase our newly announced Marvell Prestera CX 8500 family with a powerful RFC compliant 32x400G demonstration. This feature-rich family leverages the testing capability of Ixia’s AresONE test equipment to test the scale, 12.8Tbps, and wide range of packet encapsulations that are supported by the switch pipeline,” said Guy Azrad, vice president of engineering, Networking Business Unit and general manager at Marvell Israel. “This collaboration testifies to both organizations’ ability to support the design, deployment and testing of the next generation, high-speed network infrastructure that will be needed to keep pace with ever-growing data demands.”

OCP 2019: Inspur and Intel contribute 4-socket Crane Mountain design

Inspur and Intel will contribute a jointly-developed, cloud-optimized platform code named "Crane Mountain" to the OCP community.

The four-socket platform is a high-density, flexible and powerful 2U server, validated for Intel Xeon (Cascade Lake) processors and optimized with Intel Optane DC persistent memory.

Inspur said its NF8260M5 system is being used by Intel as a lead platform for introducing the “high-density cloud-optimized” four-socket server solution to the cloud service provider (CSP) market.

At OCP Summit 2019, Inspur also showcased three new artificial intelligence (AI) computing solutions, and announced the world’s first NVSwitch-enabled 16-GPU fully connected GPU expansion box, the GX5, which is also part of an advanced new architecture that combines the 16-GPU box with an Inspur 4-socket Olympus server. This solution features 80 CPU cores, making it suitable for deep-learning applications that require maximum throughput across multiple workloads. The Inspur NF8360M5 4-socket Olympus server is going through the OCP Contribution and OCP Accepted recognition process.

Inspur also launched the 8-GPU box ON5388M5 with NVLink 2.0, as a new OCP contribution-in-process for 8-GPU box solutions. The Inspur solution offers two new topologies for different AI applications, such as autonomous driving and voice recognition.

OCP 2019 video: Introducing Carrier Open Infrastructure



Bob Lamb of CBTS introduces Carrier Open Infrastructure (COI), which is reference architecture based on frameworks from the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), open source hardware from the Open Compute Project (OCP) and Open Source VNFs.

CBTS said its goal is to help carriers leverage open source virtual networking functions (VNFs) and common, off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware to grow revenue as broadband speeds increase and average revenue per-subscriber (ARPU) declines.

The COI architecture leverages the ONF's Central Office Redefined as a data center (CORD) framework for enabling gigabit access over copper, fiber and wireless.


OCP 2019: Toshiba tests NVM Express over Fabrics

At OCP Summit 2019, Toshiba Memory America demonstrated proof-of-concept native Ethernet NVMe-oF (NVM Express over Fabrics) SSDs.

Toshiba Memory also showed its KumoScale software, which is a key NVMe-oF enabler for disaggregated storage cloud deployments. First introduced last year, Toshiba Memory has recently enhanced KumoScale’s capabilities with support for TCP-based networks.
