FTTH Council Elects Three New Board Members

The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council elected three industry executives to seats on its Board of Directors for 2011: Kevin Bourg of Enablence Systems, Doug Dowling of Tyco Electronics and Kevin Morgan of ADTRAN to serve two year terms. Both Bourg and Morgan are first-time board members, while Dowling served on the Council's board earlier in the decade.

Mike Hill, CEO/President of On Trac, a Tennessee based company that provides turnkey installation services for the fiber to the home industry nationwide, will serve as board chairman in 2011, replacing David Russell, Solutions Marketing Director for Calix, who is stepping down from the board following the expiration of his term. Rounding out the nine-member 2011 board are John George of OFS, Steve Holt of KGP Logistics, Kyle Hollifield of Bristol Virginia Utilities, Dave Kiel of Corning Cable Systems, and George O'Neal of GVTC, all of whom were elected to two-year terms at the end of 2009.

HP Ships Energy Efficient Ethernet Switch

HP is the first to ship products based on a new energy-efficient Ethernet standard (IEEE 802.3az), which reduces power consumption of IT devices by automatically adjusting energy use based on actual network traffic between switches and other networked devices in real time.

The new HP E-Series zl modules are the first IEEE Energy Efficient Ethernet-enabled switches to automatically enter "sleep mode" as will connected EEE-devices, when no traffic is being transmitted. The connected devices are able to instantly re-engage when data transmission occurs.

HP expects the IEEE Energy Efficient Ethernet standard will be implemented across multiple devices, including servers, laptops and wireless access points. This will further reduce energy consumption and, therefore, lower IT costs across the enterprise.

China Telecom Tests 100G DWDM with Huawei and Corning

China Telecom, Huawei, and Corning completed a 100G WDM ultra long haul transmission test. The test, which set a new record for 100G WDM transmission distance by covering a terrestrial span of over 3000 km, used coherent PM-QPSK (polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying) technology and Huawei's OSN 8800 platform. The traffic was carried in the C-band with 50 GHz-spacing. It also featured hybrid transmission of 100G/40G.

Another highlight of the test was Corning's SMF-28 ULL ultra-low-loss optical fiber, an ITU-T G.652-compliant optical fiber that has ultra-low attenuation (average attenuation at 1550 nm: 0.168 dB/km) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD), empowering new-generation transmission system to achieve ultra-long span reach and ultra-high speed.

Huawei said China Telecom is looking to 100G WDM ultra-high-speed transmission technology as the successor of its backbone network based on 40G WDM transmission technology. Its OSN 8800 platform offers the ability to smoothly scale to 100G and support hybrid transmission of 100G, 40G and 10G signals.

Zhang Chengliang, deputy general engineer of China Telecom Beijing Research Institute, said, "This 100G WDM test, in collaboration with Huawei and Corning Incorporated, has demonstrated the positive outlook for 100G WDM applications. This test will help China Telecom step up efforts to provide more enriched broadband network services to users in the future."http://www.huawei.com

EarthLink Completes ITC^DeltaCom Acquisition

EarthLink completed its previously announced acquisition of ITC^DeltaCom, a leading provider of integrated communications services to customers in the southeastern United States, in a transaction valued at approximately $524 million. Under the deal, ITC^DeltaCom (Deltacom) stockholders received $3.00 in cash per each share of Deltacom common stock in the transaction.

EarthLink will now begin integrating its New Edge Networks and EarthLink Business Services operations with Deltacom and will market the combined services under the 'EarthLink Business' brand name.

Deltacom operates a 16,400 mile fiber optic infrastructure in the Southeast -- over 75% of which is owned or controlled under Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) agreements -- including a 14-state SONET backbone with 35 metro fiber rings, 294 collocations and 20 voice and data switches. Deltacom currently serves over 32,000 small and mid-size businesses, multi-location enterprises, government agencies and wholesale customers in the southeast with services including MPLS and IP.

Through its New Edge Networks division, EarthLink already provides business services over a nationwide MPLS network.

"With the addition of Deltacom's deep fiber assets and strong customer relationships, EarthLink is creating a leading IP infrastructure and services company. We are pleased to have gained the regulatory approvals required to close this transaction in just ten weeks. We've acquired a business that has meaningful revenue streams, strong gross margins and unlevered free cash flow that positions EarthLink for future strategic value creation," said EarthLink Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rolla P. Huff. "http://www.earthlink.net

ADTRAN's ONE Architecture Integrates Access and Packet Optical Transport

ADTRAN unveiled its Optical Networking Edge (ONE) strategy for integrating network access and aggregation with optical edge metro transport in a single platform.

ADTRAN's blueprint is to enhance its widely-deployed Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform (MSAP) with a mini-ROADM transport module with advanced network management capabilities. The initial release supports high bit rate Carrier Ethernet aggregation, SONET/SDH Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) on a card, CWDM and DWDM networking scalable from a single wavelength to 400Gbps on a single fiber pair.

Whereas metro core transport platforms deliver multi-degree capabilities for up to 80 wavelengths, ADTRAN's metro edge transport approach uses a low-power, single card in its flagship TA-5000 platform for cost efficiency. The Total Access 5000 is a carrier-class multiservice access and aggregation platform with an Ethernet core. In addition to integrated packet optical transport, it enable the TA-5000 to support a range of business optical access services, including GPON, active Ethernet, GigE, SONET/SDH and wavelenghts.

ADTRAN said its ONE portfolio enables service providers to bridge the gap between network access and transport,
leverage their installed base and extend the bandwidth efficiencies of the core all the way to
the optical edge.

"The Total Access 5000 offers the broadest set of access, aggregation and transport capabilities on the market today," said Mano Nachum, product line manager, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. "Service providers can now depend on a trusted vendor with a proven all-Ethernet platform to extend the transport network to the edge and connect to their core optical network more efficiently."http://www.adtran.com/ONE
