China Mobile Adds 48 Million Users in 2010 YTD

China Mobile is now serving 570 million users, up by nearly 48 million since the beginning of the year. Average Revenue per User (ARPU) per Month has remained steady at RMB 72 (approx. US$10.83). For the first nine months of year, China Mobile posted revenue of RMB 352.643 billion, up by 7.8% for the year.


Bytemobile Boosts its Video Optimization with Media Caching

Bytemobile, which supplies mobile video optimization solutions, released its new Unison Mobile Internet Platform featuring media caching capabilities.

The solution monitors network conditions and dynamically detects congestion in the video delivery path -- automatically applying the most appropriate level of optimization for an optimal user experience. Media caching enables operators to download and optimize a video once and serve it as many times as requested. Unlike standard caching technology, Bytemobile said solution seamlessly integrates video optimization and caching to enable both on-the-fly and offline optimization of content. The company calculates that its new media caching feature can reduce network downloads by 25-50% - further reducing the cost of video delivery and improving the overall economics of data services offered by operators.

Recent Bytemobile video optimization deployments show that nearly half of all videos requested on wireless networks are repeat downloads. On average, within a seven-day period, the most popular YouTube videos are downloaded more than 600 times, and the top video advertisements are downloaded over 5,000 times. As a result, a considerable amount of duplicate video content is traversing wireless networks and stressing the entire mobile content delivery supply chain.

IEEE 802.16m Approved as IMT-Advanced Technology

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has approved IEEE 802.16m, also know as "WirelessMAN-Advanced", as an IMT-Advanced technology. WirelessMAN-Advanced offers up to 180 Mbps of aggregate downlink throughput per site using a 20 MHz TDD channel in ITU's real-world microcellular system model, with further support for nearly 2500 VoIP users per site. Depending on design goals, antenna configurations, and spectrum availability, significantly higher dates rates can be enabled.

The key decision, taken by ITU-R's Working Party 5D (WP 5D) at the conclusion of its meeting of 13-20 October in Chongqing, China, followed a rigorous evaluation and consensus-building process after the introduction of detailed technical proposals in October 2009, including consideration of exhaustive evaluation reports from nine expert groups from around the world.

The WiMAX Forum noted that WirelessMAN-Advanced represents a group of three proposals, of which two (one by the Administration of Japan and one by Korea's TTA) were considered technically identical to that of IEEE. During the meeting, WP 5D accepted an offer from the three parties to have IEEE complete and submit the full detailed specification of the technology at the following WP 5D meeting in April 2011. WirelessMAN-Advanced and LTE-Advanced were the only two technologies approved for IMT-Advanced.

The WiMAX Forum is working to complete the detailed specification of WiMAX Release 2, which will take advantage of the new IEEE standard and ensure that WiMAX Release 2 networks and devices will offer capabilities and efficiencies to exceed the baseline IMT-Advanced requirements.

WiMAX Release 2 also promises improved VoIP capacity, spectral efficiency, latency, handover speed, cell range, and coverage -- with support for wider operating bandwidth in both TDD and FDD modes.

CommScope Intros BrighPath RFoG, EPON and HFC Solutions

CommScope, which is already a leading supplier of physical plant infrastructure to cable network operators, introduced its "BrightPath Optical Solutions" (BOS) for RF-over-Glass (RFOG), EPON, and hybrid-fiber coax (HFC) node segmentation architectures.

CommScope's BrightPath comprises headend, outside plant and end user solutions for residential, multi-dwelling unit, commercial and cellular backhaul applications. These products include optical line transmitters, optical amplifiers, low-noise receivers, head-end optical splitters, head-end WDM, optical taps, micronodes, NIDs, conduits and fiber.

Cisco's 24-Channel DOCSIS 3.0 Nears 1 Gbps Downlinks

Cisco introduced a new Broadband Processing Engine for its flagship uBR10012 Universal Broadband Router and Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). The new line card aims to accelerates the transition of cable operators to an all-IP network. Significantly, it enables DOCSIS 3.0 bonding of up to 24 channels for downstream speeds approaching 1.0 Gbps. Comcast, Cox and others are testing the new 3G60 line card.

Designed as a modular CMTS solution, the 3G60 will help cable operators use universal-edge quadrature amplitude modulation, or QAM, products with more channels per port, lowering the cost and environmental overhead for all services. Some key features:

  • the card provides 72 downstream and 60 upstream channels with full DOCSIS 3.0 capabilities per module to boost overall bandwidth capacity and alleviate high-traffic network pressures.

  • the upstream and downstream channels on the 3G60 can be provisioned via software licensing, and customers can install the card and pay only for the channels they use.

  • compared with the Cisco DOCSIS 2.0 solution with the uBR-MC5X20H line card, the downstream channel capacity has increased 10-fold, and the upstream channel capacity has increased threefold, per line card.

  • using the 3G60, a single uBR10012 can support up to 576 downstream and 480 upstream channels per chassis. This is the highest CMTS capacity and density in the industry.

  • the 3G60 supports DOCSIS 3.0 downstream channel bonding of up to 24 channels, allowing downstream speeds approaching 1.0 gigabit per second.

  • the uBR10012 together with the 3G60 line card supports the full set of DOCSIS 3.0 features at scale, including IPv6, and supports advanced features such as dynamic bandwidth sharing. Cable operators can rest assured that the CMTS solutions they purchase today will support large-scale IP video services and enable the migration to an all-IP network in the near future.

Cisco Adds Traffic Packet Optimization to ASR 5000 (Starent)

Cisco introduced a Traffic Packet Optimization service capability for its ASR 5000 platform, its IP-based mobile core platform that was developed by Starent Networks, which Cisco acquired last year.

Traffic Packet Optimization optimizes transmission control protocol (TCP) and hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) traffic over a mobile connection to improve the performance of video and Web applications. Some of the performance gains are accomplished via compression, thereby reducing the amount of traffic in a service providers' network. These capabilities are software-enabled.

Cisco said its ASR 5000 In-Line Services could also help service providers deliver differentiated services that can be quickly monetized and optimized for customer attraction and retention.

Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom Tests LTE with Alcatel-Lucent

Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories (CHT-TL) will conduct an LTE trial using both the 2.6 GHz and 700 MHz bands. Alcatel-Lucent will provide a pre-integrated, end-to-end solution including LTE base stations (eNodeBs), its Evolved Packet Core (EPC), IP service routing network elements, application portal for innovative services as well as operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) system. Alcatel-Lucent will also provide a range of professional services including project management, planning, installation, integration and commissioning, and testing.

Motorola Debuts USB LTE Modem, WiMAX CPE

The Motorola Solutions introduced its FDD LTE USB modem (USB-lte 7110).

Motorola also introduced its most powerful WiMAX indoor customer premises equipment (CPEi) . The CPEi 890 provides wireless broadband access, including data, voice and Wi-Fi to home subscribers in frequencies over 2.5 GHz frequencies. Key features includes 2x2 802.11 b/g/n router functionality and Wi-Fi Protected Set-up (WPS).

Motorola Wins $30M Contract for Secure Border Communications

Motorola was awarded a $30 million contract from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), an agency within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), to provide Astro 25 land mobile radio (LMR) P25 communications upgrades for border security operations on the northern U.S. border. The $30 million contract allocates for equipment and technology and for services and support. Motorola will manage the delivery, installation and optimization of P25 radio network technology. Additionally, the company will be responsible for Point-to-Point wireless IP backhaul optimization and civil deployment to more than 50 remote radio frequency (RF) tower sites over a period of 24 months.
