Crossbeam Scales its Network Security Line

Crossbeam Systems has revamped and expanded its X-Series family of network security platforms, enabling systems performance from 5 Gbps to 150 Gbps. Crossbeam delivers its high-performance, deep packet processing by leveraging four-core and eight-core application processing modules (APMs).
With this rollout, Crossbeam is using the latest Intel six core processors to deliver 12-core APMs, each capable of 20 Gbps of fully inspected application performance. The company is also introducing four new chassis models. The line-up includes:

  • X20 -- a flexible four-slot platform pre-configured for one security application, adaptable to run two applications with a total throughput capacity of 5 Gbps.

  • X30 -- a flexible four-slot platform pre-configured for one security application, adaptable to run two applications with a total throughput capacity of 10 Gbps.

  • X60 -- a modular, seven-slot platform that will run up to five applications and can scale to inspect traffic at speeds of up to 80 Gbps of throughput.

  • X80-S -- a modular 14-slot chassis that will run up to 10 applications and can scale to inspect a real-world mix of traffic at speeds of up to 150 Gbps of throughput.

Crossbeam's new X20 and X30 four-slot platforms offer field-upgradability to a seven-slot, 80 Gbps X60 platform by using an upgrade kit. In addition, the X-Series family integrates with HP OpenView Network Node Manager, enabling customers to monitor, configure and report on the X-Series platform along with other network components from within their HP management environment.

E-Band Adds 60 GHz Point-to-Point Radio

E-Band Communications introduced a line of 60 GHz point-to-point radios. The E-Link Mini 320 is rated at 320 Mbps full-duplex and features a flat panel design measuring 7 inches square. The unit uses Power-over-Ethernet (just one cable handles power and data transmission) and Spectrum efficient QPSK modulation. The 60 GHz band enables license-free operation in most countries.

"Building on the popularity of our 70/80 GHz solutions, we have added a line of products in the 60 GHz frequency range," said Saul Umbrasas, co-founder and senior vice president at E-Band Communications. "Compared to competing 60 GHz radios with 100 Mbps capacity, the E-Link Mini 320 provides over three times higher capacity in a much smaller package. At just 7.2 inches square, the E-Link Mini 320 is less than half the size, weight and power consumption of our competitions' 60 GHz radios, and doesn't require a separate external power supply and cable. The size, pricing and performance of the E-Link Mini 320 makes it the perfect solution for extending macrocell networks to a street-level microcellular architecture, especially in dense urban settings."

Samsung Demos 330 Mbps Mobile WiMAX

Samsung Electronics is demonstrating a WiMAX 2 system capable of 330 Mbps peak downstream rates. The trial system being shown at at CEATEC JAPAN 2010 is based on IEEE 802.16m technology.

The WiMAX 2 demonstration UQ Communications and Samsung shows Full-HD 3D video and 16 Full-HD videos running simultaneously over the WiMAX 2 trial systems and associated devices.

"Technology never stops evolving. As the demand for data bandwidth and speed grows exponentially, technology has needed to respond. Mobile WiMAX opened up the era of Mobile broadband and is already component of many optimized solutions." said Mr. Woonsub Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Telecommunication Systems Business of Samsung Electronics.

WiMAX 2 standards are expected to be finalized by November 2010. Samsung confirmed plans to introduce the first commercial solutions of WiMAX 2 in the end of 2011.

BridgeWave Expands in Multiple Frequency Bands

BridgeWave Communications, which supplies high-capacity, full-rate gigabit millimeter wave (60 GHz and 80 GHz) products, has expanded its FlexPort product family into the microwave domain.

BridgeWave's FlexPort µWave microwave radio is a compact, all-outdoor unit capable of transmitting full-rate gigabit Ethernet. It features BridgeWave's Ethernet switching, digital modem and signal processing technologies and achieves full-rate gigabit transmissions in the lower frequency spectrum from 11 to 38 GHz.

BridgeWave said its FlexPort family was designed for network operators wanting to either migrate to next-generation 4G networks from their existing 2G/3G networks, or for new service providers building "greenfield" WiMAX or LTE networks. The new FlexPort µWave offers a cost effective migration path from initial medium capacity (300Mbps) transport, to full-rate gigabit access and backhaul connections without the added expense of a second tower climb.

Skype Appoints Tony Bates as New CEO

Skype named Tony Bates as its new CEO and a member of the Board of Directors. Bates most recently served as General Manager of Cisco's Enterprise, Commercial and Small Business Division, where he was responsible for over $20 billion of annual revenue and managed over 12,500 employees worldwide. He has also served as General Manager of Cisco's Service Provider Group.

Padmasree Warrior Takes Over as GM of Cisco's Enterprise Division

Padmasree Warrior, will add the duties of being SVP/GM of our Enterprise, Commercial and Small Business Development Group. She also serves as Cisco's Chief Technology Officer.

Warrior replaces Tony Bates, who is leaving the company to pursue another opportunity.

WSJ: Ericsson Declines BSNL Tender in India

Ericsson declined to participate in a tender by BSNL in India potentially worth up to $451 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company reportedly objected to an Indian government requirement that all bidders submit software/hardware codes for inspection. India has become wary that imported telecom equipment may have embedded spyware.

Highland Telephone Selects Calix for Broadband Stimulus Project

Highland Telephone Cooperative has selected Calix's Unified Access portfolio for a Broadband Stimulus project in rural Tennessee and Kentucky. The $66.5 million "Fiber Forward" project, composed of a $49.9 million loan and $16.5 million in grants, will use GPON to bring advanced broadband to approximately 18,000 homes, 1,800 small businesses, and 100 anchor institutions.

The rural subscribers included in this initiative will be served via a combination of fiber access technologies, including GPON to all residences, businesses, and cell towers, and redundant ten-gigabit Ethernet (10GE) ringed transport technologies delivered via primarily the Calix E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP).

The C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP) will also be leveraged in the network, providing 10GE transport as well as business services support. Applications supported over fiber will include radio frequency (RF) video overlay with RF over glass (RFOG) interactive technology, Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) business Ethernet services and traditional business services, and mobile backhaul. A variety of Calix 700GE and 700GX optical network terminals (ONTs) will be utilized, each capable of delivering broadband speeds to each residence and business of up to 1 Gbps and optimized for the identified applications targeted. To assist in implementation, Highland Telephone Cooperative intends to use Calix Professional Services for engineering, furnish, and installation (EF&I) services.

Broadcom Supports IEEE's New Energy Efficient Ethernet Standard

Broadcom announced its support for the newly ratified IEEE Std. 802.3az-2010 Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) standard. Broadcom said its EEE-compliant products offer energy savings of up to 70 percent or greater and provide customers with end-to-end silicon and software solutions that enable faster deployment of energy efficient networks.

As part of its EEN initiative, Broadcom has developed its proprietary "AutoGrEEEn" technology to facilitate the adoption of EEE and provide a faster migration path for legacy networking equipment. AutoGrEEEn technology implements the EEE standard directly into Broadcom PHYs and allows them to be in EEE mode when interfacing with non-EEE enabled MAC devices, without requiring changes to those devices. This innovation allows customers to make existing network equipment EEE-compliant by simply changing the PHY devices.

EB Announces "Tough VoIP Power Over Ethernet Injector" for Military

EB (Elektrobit Corporation) introduced a network-agnostic solution that provides PoE-supported data interfaces to tactical military communications equipment.

The EB Tough VoIP Power over Ethernet (PoE) Injector, which is a complementary accessory to its Tough VoIP product portfolio, has the capability to utilize vehicular power supplies for PoE-supported military communications gear. The device can combine vehicular power supplies in the voltage range of 10-30V DC with regular Ethernet data, while providing a PoE-supported Ethernet connection for user devices -- whether they are EB Tough VoIP products or third party equipment.

"We've seen similar Power over Ethernet accessories used in traditional commercial markets, yet recognized the need to bring this type of solution to the niche military communications space," said Mikko Viitaniemi, senior manager, Defense Products, EB Wireless Solutions. "Our goal was to improve the interoperability of different equipment and platforms in tactical communications environments by developing and extending the Tough VoIP product portfolio. We believe today's introduction of the rugged and durable Tough VoIP PoE Injector meets this objective."

Verizon Wireless to Issue Refunds for Unintended Mobile Data Sessions

Verizon Wireless will issue credits and/or refunds to some 15 million customers for unintended mobile data sessions over the past few years. The company said most of these billing errors concern unintended data sessions from customers who did not have data plans but whose mobile phones initiated a data or web session by mistake. Most of the affected customers will receive credits or refunds in the $2-6 range.

LightSquared Raises Additional $850M for Wholesale LTE + Satellite

LightSquared, a new company backed by Harbinger Capital Partners, has closed an additional $850 million in financing through a credit facility led by UBS AG. The syndicated loan has a term of four years. LightSquared plans to use the proceeds of the financing for general corporate purposes, including construction of its LTE-wholesale network. With this additional $850 million, LightSquared has obtained an aggregate of more than $2 billion in equity and debt proceeds and in commitments.

LightSquared also announced it has signed its first wholesale agreements and is in advanced negotiations with numerous potential customers.

In addition, LightSquared intends to accelerate the implementation of Phase 2 of the Inmarsat Cooperation Agreement to the fourth quarter of this year. By doing so, LightSquared will obtain increased access to spectrum controlled by Inmarsat.

Sanjiv Ahuja, chairman and chief executive officer of LightSquared, stated: "We are extremely pleased that we have secured this significant amount of financing and believe it endorses our overall business model, while providing LightSquared with a solid step forward to execute our strategy and begin building out our 4G-LTE-wholesale network."
  • In July, LightSquared unveiled its plans to launch a wholesale-only, 4G-LTE network across the U.S. complemented by satellite coverage. LightSquared will provide wholesale wireless broadband capacity to a diverse group of customers, including retailers; wireline and wireless communication service providers; cable operators; device manufacturers; web players; content providers; and many others. The LightSquared network will allow these partners to offer satellite-only, terrestrial-only, or integrated satellite-terrestrial services to their end users.

  • Nokia Siemens Networks has signed an 8-year agreement valued at more than $7 billion over 8 years to provide network design, equipment manufacturing and installation, and network operations and maintenance. The nationwide LightSquared network, consisting of approximately 40,000 cellular base stations, will cover 92 percent of the U.S. population by 2015. The satellite portion of the LightSquared network will leverage the next generation hybrid Mobile Satellite System (MSS) with an Ancillary Terrestrial Component (ATC) developed by SkyTerra.
