Exar to acquire Galazar Networks for Carrier Ethernet Silicon

Exar Corporation will acquire Galazar Networks -- a privately held company based in Ottawa, Ontario-- for an undisclosed sum.

Galazar's product portfolio addresses transport of a wide range of datacom and telecom services including Ethernet, SAN, TDM and video over SONET/SDH, PDH and OTN networks. Galazar's products support OTN, SONET/SDH, Telecom-PDH (DS3/E3 and DS1/E1), and data services (private line, Ethernet, packet and SAN). Packet and Ethernet over SONET/SDH (EoS) and Ethernet over PDH (EoPDH) capability is provided through GFP, LAPS and PPP encapsulations, and the Virtual Concatenation (VC) with Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS).

Galazar Networks has raised over US$28 million in three rounds of venture financing. The company's investors include Skypoint Capital Corporation, VenGrowth Capital Partners, Katsura Investments, Desjardins Venture Capital Inc., RBC Capital Partners, Goldman Sachs, BDC Venture Capital and Mitsui and Co., Ltd.

  • Earlier this year, Exar acquired Hifn, a supplier of high-performance network, storage and security processors, in a stock swap deal valued at approximately $59 million. Hifn, which is based in Los Gatos, California, supplies a line of Applied Services Processors (ASPs) to network OEMs. Exar (Nasdaq: EXAR), which is based in Milpitas, California, said the acquisition brings valuable intellectual property related to Ethernet, embedded processors, network security, compression, deduplication, RAID, packet processing architecture and SoC design methodology.
