Vitesse and Nortel Networks Team On Resilient Packet Ring Solutions
Vitesse Semiconductor and Nortel Networks will cooperate in the development of 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps chipset platforms optimized for resilient packet ring solutions. The first product set includes a dual 2.5 Gbps programmable resilient packet ring media access controller; an OC-48c packet/cell framer with integrated PHY; a fully programmable 2.5 Gbps network processor unit (NPU); and Vitesse's high-performance packet/cell switching product. Commercial availability is expected in Q3. Work on a 10 Gbps implementation is underway. The solution uses Nortel Networks' OPTera Packet Edge resilient packet ring technology, which has been submitted to the IEEE 802.17 Working Group as a model of packet-oriented, shared-ring technology.
