NGN Ventures: Operation Support Systems (OSS) Tools
Dave Nelsen, CEO of CoManage Corporation said that the data integrity of inventory systems information is an enormous Operation Support Systems (OSS) problem.  A typical carrier's inventory of deployed and reserve systems can be off by 40-60% because of the manual process that is currently required.  Solving this with a Network Driven Data Integrity approach can provide substantial capital and operating cost savings.  A major issue in implementing such a system is the lack of standard protocols for OSS to communicate with network devices.  Networks lack sufficient operational control, in the view of Jonathan Wolf, President & CEO of GoldWire Technology.  Human error is one of the primary causes of network faults.  Wolf proposes that network configuration control can solve this.  He also stresses that any OSS tool needs to fit into a service provider's current ways of doing business and its existing practices to be adopted.

According to Kirk D'Orazio, President and CEO of CPLANE, provisioning is a manual, time consuming process fraught with errors.  The solution is an OSS tool that automates service activation in a multi-vendor IP network, reducing service provider costs and improving customer loyalty.  From an investment point of view, OSS is one of the few bright spots in the telecom space, according to David Aronoff, General Partner of Greylock.  OSS tools offer excellent ways for carriers to reduce expenses and increase revenues today, and carriers are willing to pay for it.
