U.S. Army awards $135M cloud service contract to IBM

The U.S. Army’s Logistics Support Activity (LOGSA) awarded IBM a 33-month contract valued at $135 million to continue providing cloud services, software development and cognitive computing. This constitutesthe technical infrastructure for one of the U.S. federal government’s biggest logistics systems.

IBM has been working with LOGSA since 2012 under a managed services agreement whereby the Army pays only for cloud services that it actually consumes. The new contract will allow the Army to avoid about $15 million per year in operational costs.

As part of this new contract, the Army will also benefit from the IBM Watson IoT for Manufacturing and Industrial Products product suite, which includes IBM Predictive Maintenance and Quality System, an integrated solution that monitors, analyzes, and reports on information gathered from devices and equipment and recommends maintenance procedures. IBM said this will help the Army predict vehicle maintenance failures from more than 5 billion data points of on-board sensors that will be stored within this environment. In addition, the Army is adopting Watson IoT services and a new Watson IoT Equipment Advisor solution that analyzes unstructured, structured and sensor data directly from military assets.

Salesforce Signs Onto IBM Watson

IBM and Salesforce announced a global strategic partnership for leveraging artificial intelligence in business decisions.

Under the deal, IBM Watson, the leading AI platform for business, and Salesforce Ein
stein, AI that powers the world’s #1 CRM, will seamlessly connect to enable an entirely new level of intelligent customer engagement across sales, service, marketing, commerce and more.

IBM is also strategically investing in its Global Business Services capabilities for Salesforce with a new practice to help clients rapidly deploy the combined IBM Watson and Salesforce Einstein capabilities.

IBM's Watson Powers Cognitive Security Operations Center

IBM is putting Watson to work as the augmented intelligence technology for security operations centers (SOCs).

Specifically, Watson for Cyber Security will be integrated into IBM’s new Cognitive SOC platform, bringing together advanced cognitive technologies with security operations and providing the ability to respond to threats across endpoint, network, users and cloud. IBM Security also is announcing a new endpoint detection and response (EDR) solution called IBM BigFix Detect.

IBM Security said that over the past year, Watson has been trained on the language of cybersecurity, ingesting over 1 million security documents. Watson can now help security analysts parse thousands of natural language research reports that have never before been accessible to modern security tools. The centerpiece of this platform is IBM QRadar Advisor with Watson, a new app available in the IBM Security App Exchange, which is the first tool that taps into Watson’s corpus of cybersecurity insights.

IBM Watson Takes on Tax Preparation with H&R Block

IBM is working with H&R Block to apply Watson's analytical intelligence to a consumer-facing tax preparation service.

IBM Watson technology will be used by H&R Block’s tax professionals this tax season to help deliver the best outcome for each unique tax situation, while helping clients better understand how different filing options can impact their tax outcome. As part of the first phase of the collaboration, H&R Block and IBM development teams trained Watson in the language of tax, first applying the technology to the thousands of questions and topics discussed during the return filing process.

IBM said Watson is a good match because the field of tax preparation involves massive volumes of data, including a federal tax code with more than 74,000 pages and thousands of yearly tax law changes, all of which impact a client’s tax outcome.

IBM's Watson to Analyze Video Content

IBM introduced new Watson-powered cognitive services for unlocking data-rich insights for video content and audiences.

The idea is to apply cognitive technology for mining and analyzing the complex data in video.

“Companies are creating video with vast amounts of valuable data, but they don’t have a way to easily identify that information or audience reaction to it,” said Braxton Jarratt, general manager, IBM Cloud Video. “Today’s new services are a major step forward in using IBM’s cognitive and cloud capabilities to help companies unlock meaningful information about their videos and viewers so they can create and curate more personalized content that matters to specific audiences.”

Accessible through the IBM Cloud, these new services analyze video data that can otherwise be difficult and time-consuming to manually process. They include:            

  • Live Event Analysis: Combines Watson APIs with IBM Cloud Video streaming video solutions to track near real-time audience reaction of live events by analyzing social media feeds.
  • Video Scene Detection: Automatically segments videos into meaningful scenes to make it more efficient to find and deliver targeted content.
  • Audience Insights: Integrates IBM Cloud Video solutions with the IBM Media Insights Platform, a cognitive solution that uses Watson APIs to help identify audience preferences, including what they are watching and saying, through social media.

IBM to Add Promontory to its Watson Expertise

IBM agreed to acquire Promontory Financial Group, a global market-leading risk management and regulatory compliance consulting firm, to expand the deep industry expertise of Watson.

IBM said Watson’s cognitive capabilities will directly address the massive operational effort and manual cost of escalating regulation and risk management requirements. Promontory's team of 600 professionals will train Watson to help manage financial risk and compliance.

More than 20,000 new regulatory requirements were created last year alone, and the complete catalog of regulations is projected to exceed 300 million pages by 2020.

“What Watson is doing to transform oncology by working with the world’s leading oncologists, we will now do for regulation, risk and compliance,” said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president, IBM Industry Platforms. “Promontory’s experts are unsurpassed in this field. IBM Cloud Data Center Inaugurated in Korea

IBM opened a new Cloud Data Center in Korea in collaboration with SK Holdings C&C.

The new facility, which is located outside of Seoul in Pangyo, is IBM’s ninth Cloud Data Center in the Asia-Pacific region, and part of the company’s growing global network of 47 Cloud Data Centers.

“A key part of our cloud strategy is to fuel new ecosystems to spur innovation and collaborate with companies who understand the local market.” said Robert LeBlanc, senior vice president, IBM Cloud.  “That’s why we chose to partner with SK Holdings C&C in Korea. Together, we are able to bring the local expertise, platform and data services that gives Korean customers the ability to compete on a global scale.”

Cisco and IBM Collaborate on Cloud-based Apps

IBM and Cisco will form a suite of cloud-based workplace tools and applications infused with IBM Watson.

Specifically, Cisco Spark and WebEx collaborative workspace platforms will be integrated with IBM’s leading cloud collaboration solutions, including Verse and Connections, and underpinned by IBM’s cognitive computing capabilities. The joint solutions will utilize IBM Watson and Connections APIs as well as Cisco Spark and WebEx APIs.

IBM and SAP Seek to Integrate Cognitive + Cloud

IBM and SAP are looking to deepen their partnership by developing cognitive extensions enabled with SAP HANA software.

Specifically, the companies intend to co-locate resources in Walldorf, Germany and Palo Alto, California with the aim of sparking new solutions.

"The future of business strategy and business value will proceed from the foundational elements of this announcement -- cognitive, cloud and the design of consumer-quality experiences in every industry," said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president, IBM Global Business Services. "We're formalizing a complementary set of capabilities to simplify and speed outcomes for clients evolving to become cognitive enterprises."

IBM to Acquire Weather Company's B2B, Mobile, Cloud Properties

IBM plans to acquire The Weather Company’s B2B, mobile and cloud-based web properties, including WSI, weather.com, Weather Underground and The Weather Company brand. The Weather Company is currently owned by a consortium comprising the private equity firms The Blackstone Group and Bain Capital, and NBCUniversal.

The deal does not include the TV segment – The Weather Channel, which will license weather forecast data and analytics from IBM under a long-term contract.

IBM is seeking to integrate weather expertise into a new Watson IoT Unit and Watson IoT Cloud platform. The idea is to bring together IBM’s cognitive and analytics platform and The Weather Company’s dynamic cloud data platform, which powers the fourth most-used mobile app daily in the United States and handles 26 billion inquiries to its cloud-based services each day.

IBM Launches "Cognitive" Consulting Practice

Leveraging its Watson artificial intelligence cloud, IBM is launching a consulting organization dedicated to helping clients realize the transformative value of "cognitive business."

"Our work with clients across many industries shows that cognitive computing is the path to the next great set of possibilities for business," said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president, IBM Global Business Services. "Clients know they are collecting and analyzing more data than ever before, but 80 percent of all the available data -- images, voice, literature, chemical formulas, social expressions -- remains out of reach for traditional computing systems. IBM Opens APIs for Extending Watson's Cognitive Capabilities

IBM is releasing a wide set of APIs for extending the language recognition, speech and vision capabilities of Watson. The cognitive APIs will help third-party developers in creating products, services and applications embedded with Watson.

New capabilities, offered through the Watson Developer Cloud, include advanced language, speech, and vision services, and developer tools. The company said Watson has evolved from one API and a limited set of application-specific deep Q&A capabilities two years ago, to more than 25 APIs powered by over 50 technologies now. New speech capabilities include Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.

IBM also announced the opening a new Watson development hub in San Francisco, expanding on its NYC headquarters.

IBM to add Medical Imaging to Watson

IBM agreed to acquire Merge Healthcare Incorporated (NASDAQ: MRGE), a leading provider of medical image handling and processing, interoperability and clinical systems for $7.13 per share in cash, for a total transaction value of $1 billion.

IBM said the deal will provide Watson with the ability to "see" by bringing together Watson's advanced image analytics and cognitive capabilities with data and images obtained from Merge's medical imaging management platform.  Merge's technology platforms are used at more than 7,500 U.S. healthcare sites, as well as most of the world's leading clinical research institutes and pharmaceutical firms to manage a growing body of medical images.  The vision is that these organizations could use the Watson Health Cloud to surface new insights from a consolidated, patient-centric view of current and historical images, electronic health records, data from wearable devices and other related medical data, in a HIPAA-enabled environment.

IBM Watson Develops Hybrid Cloud Capabilities

IBM Watson will be gaining new hybrid cloud capabilities that help bridge enterprise data with web-based cloud applications for faster and more insightful data intelligence.

IBM said Watson Hybrid Cloud will use Watson Explorer — a cognitive computing exploration capability for the enterprise — as the on-premises platform for the application development, combining enterprise data sources into the application through a scalable environment that keeps utilized data local, private and a secure.

"Enterprise developers are building applications that are more than just using infrastructure, they're creating capability to process business transactions that fuse insights spanning various data sets," said Mike Rhodin, senior vice president, IBM Watson. "What we see today is that the cloud is transforming into a hybrid data delivery model, so naturally developers seek flexibility to run apps and services across on-premises systems and the cloud; thereby making it much easier to deliver Watson to the enterprise."
