Cumulus targets web-scale networks for containers and microservices

Cumulus Networks is introducing a suite of technologies to help enterprises to deploy and operate production-ready web-scale networks for containers and microservices.

The company said its new "Cumulus Host Pack" enables a path to web-scale networking that supports containers and microservices by utilizing a common toolset of the Linux ecosystem. Because Cumulus Linux brings the host to the network, Host Pack gives application developers and network operators universal visibility and connectivity of the network. This visibility is needed because containers are constantly created and destroyed, and workloads are often moved to different physical machines or migrated to completely different data centers. The new Host Pack offering is the first of its kind to address the challenges network operators face in achieving end-to-end network visibility and connectivity of containerized applications.

Key capabilities and benefits of Host Pack include

  • Granular container visibility for faster debugging: Host Pack gives operational and development teams shared visibility of application availability through popular container orchestration tools such as Mesosphere, Kubernetes, and Docker Swarm. Enabled by NetQ running on the host, network operators can easily view the health of container services, keep track of container locations, track IP addresses and open ports, and have deep insights into where an issue resides, allowing for faster troubleshooting.
  • Simplified network connectivity for improved performance: With the use of routing protocols such as FRRouting and BGP unnumbered directly on the host and in a Layer 3 architecture, Cumulus' network fabric is able to dynamically learn about containers and distribute these addresses throughout the network to ensure predictable performance between containers across host environments. This removes the complications of a Layer 2 overhead, provides rich and reliable multipathing, simplifies IP address management, and increases reliability.   
  • A common data center operating model, Linux, from network to containers: Cumulus Linux utilizes the same Linux networking model that is foundational to container systems. This enables the use of a common operational toolset, guarantees interoperability, and reduces complexity across the entire data center.

The Cumulus Host Pack suite will also be made available for trial through Cumulus in the Cloud, a low effort, zero cost way to explore these technologies before committing to a full deployment.

ECOMP and OPEN-O to Become ONAP

The open source ECOMP project, which AT&T recently turned over to the Linux Foundation, and Open Orchestrator Project (OPEN-O), which is also managed by the Linux Foundation, will be merged to create the new Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) Project.

ONAP will allow end users to automate, design, orchestrate, and manage services and virtual functions. Its goal is to provide a harmonized and comprehensive framework for real-time, policy-driven software automation of virtual network functions that will enable software, network, IT and cloud providers and developers to rapidly create new services.

The Linux Foundation said that by consolidating member resources, ONAP is well positioned to deliver a unified architecture and implementation, with an open standards upstream focus, faster than any one project could on its own.

Founding Platinum members of ONAP include Amdocs, AT&T, Bell Canada, China Mobile, China Telecom, Cisco, Ericsson, GigaSpaces, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Nokia, Orange, Tech Mahindra, VMware and ZTE. Silver members of ONAP are ARM, BOCO Inter-Telecom, Canonical, China Unicom, Cloudbase Solutions, Metaswitch and Raisecom.

“By combining two of the largest open source networking initiatives, the community is able to take advantage of the best architectural components of both projects,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation. “We’re excited to see the industry coalesce around ONAP with this unprecedented merger. Such a broad effort and investment will expedite our vision to deliver an open platform for network automation.”

The Linux Foundation will establish a governance and membership structure for ONAP to nurture a vibrant technical community.

Mellanox Adds Linux Support to its Open Ethernet Switch

Mellanox Technologies released a standard Linux kernel driver for its Open Ethernet, Spectrum switch platforms. The driver enables standard Linux Operating Systems and off-the-shelf Linux-based applications to operate on the switch, including L2 and L3 switching.

Mellanox Technologies’ Open Ethernet switch platforms, which currently support multiple operating systems, such as Cumulus Linux, MLNX-OS and more, now also support any native Linux operating system.

“The eco-system effort currently underway to enable Open Ethernet switch infrastructure is gaining strong momentum, as it enables IT managers to fully optimize their data centers for maximum performance and lower cost of ownership,” said Dror Goldenberg, vice president of software architecture at Mellanox Technologies. “The community endeavor to enable the native Linux operating system will further simplify the adoption of Open Ethernet across a variety of data centers. Mellanox Sets Out an Open Composable Network Framework

Mellanox Technologies unveiled its next-generation Open Composable Networks (OCN) platform aimed at helping enterprises and service providers to unlock performance and unleash innovation with predictable application performance and the efficiency of Web-Scale IT.

Mellanox said its OCN framework leverages the network disaggregation model pioneered by the hyperscale cloud operators, where functional independent modules are combined with open, clearly-defined abstraction interfaces.

Some highlights:
  • The Mellanox end-to-end 25/50/100 Gb/s Ethernet portfolio includes Spectrum switches, ConnectX adapters, and LinkX cables.
  • Mellanox has been a key contributor to the development open networking initiatives including OCP ONIE and SAI, and Linux switchdev, where Spectrum is the first switch supported upstream in Linux
  • The Mellanox NEO management package enables network automation and software defined intelligence. Through integration with other cloud management platforms and Software Defined Networking (SDN) controllers, NEO helps to enhance network operational efficiency, and make network infrastructure easy to deploy, manage, and scale.

Red Hat Revenue Pops to $600 million, up 19% YoY

Red Hat reported total revenue of $600 million for its second quarter of fiscal year 2017 ended August 31, 2016, up 19% in U.S. dollars year-over-year, or 18% measured in constant currency.

“Red Hat's second quarter revenue results were highlighted by 18% in year-over-year growth for our Infrastructure offerings combined with 33% in year-over-year growth for our Application development and other emerging technologies," said Jim Whitehurst, President and Chief Executive Officer of Red Hat. "Digital transformation and hybrid cloud computing are changing how applications are built, deployed, and managed. As organizations adopt agile application development technologies such as Linux containers, they are able to rely on Red Hat as their strategic partner to modernize their infrastructure and application development platforms.”

Subscription Revenue Breakout: Subscription revenue from Infrastructure-related offerings for the quarter was $427 million, an increase of 18% in U.S. dollars year-over-year and 17% measured in constant currency. Subscription revenue from Application development-related and other emerging technologies offerings for the quarter was $104 million, an increase of 33% in U.S. dollars year-over-year and 32% measured in constant currency.

OpenSwitch Project Now Under Linux Foundation

The OpenSwitch Project, which is developing an open source, Linux-based Network Operating System, will be managed as a Linux Foundation project.

OpenSwitch is designed to power enterprise grade switches from multiple hardware vendors that will enable organizations to rapidly build data center networks that are customized for unique business needs. OpenSwitch also includes optional integration with SnapRoute’s open source L2/L3 stack. The SnapRoute stack is designed with the principles of a modern network stack and safe software design, is built for developer use and includes extensive operator control and instrumentation.

Members and participating organizations include Barefoot Networks, Broadcom, Cavium, Inc., Edgecore Networks, Extreme Networks, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, LinkedIn, Marvell, Mellanox Technologies, Nephos Inc., P4.org, Quattro Networks, Inc. and SnapRoute.

HP Launches OpenSwitch Network Operating System

HP launched a new OpenSwitch network operating system (NOS) designed for data centers.

OpenSwitch is intended to be an open community that provides developers and users the ability to accelerate innovation, avoid vendor lock-in, and realize investment protection as they rapidly build data center networks. HP announced a number of early supporters including Accton Technology Corporation, Arista, Broadcom, Intel, and VMWare.

“Open source software, with its collaborative community of specialized developers, accelerates innovation and improves the stability of the software platform, providing organizations with a more powerful infrastructure to support their specific business requirements,” said Mark Carroll, chief technology officer for HP Networking. “The newly formed developer community and Linux-based OpenSwitch NOS early release code will help developers address the rapidly evolving business and web-scale networking needs in the industry.”

Initial components and key attributes of OpenSwitch include:

  • A fully featured NOS with L2/L3 protocols support
  • Open source cloud database for persistent and ephemeral configuration

#MWC: Pluribus Updates SDN Software for Dell ON Switches

Pluribus Networks released a new version of its Open Netvisor Linux (ONVL) for Dell, enabling the automatic creation of fully connected mesh networking for the data center along with deep visibility and application-awareness for applications like big data, network storage and virtual desktop infrastructure.

Highlights of Open Netvisor Linux version 2.3.2 for Dell include:

  • The ability to create an agile, fully connected and single fabric regardless of the number of switches, with the added benefit of simplified deployment and maintenance of the data center network

#MWC16: Linux Foundation Backs Open-Orchestrator Project

A new OPEN-Orchestrator Project (OPEN-O) is getting underway to develop the first open source software framework and orchestrator to enable agile software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) operations. The initiative is driven by China Mobile and Huawei, with early support from Brocade, China Telecom, DynaTrace, Ericsson, F5 Networks, GigaSpaces, Infoblox, Intel, KT, Red Hat, Raisecom, Riverbed and ZTE. The project will be hosted by The Linux Foundation.

As an open source orchestration framework, OPEN-O will integrate open networking technologies and enable carriers to quickly and cost-effectively implement SDN and NFV through open source code development. The project will also aim to accelerate multi-vendor integration, service innovation and improve agility across network operations.

"China born and global in nature, OPEN-O will unite industry forces to set up the world's first SDN and NFV unified orchestrator, serving as an important step in promoting deeper convergence among SDN and NFV technologies and innovation in the networking industry,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director, The Linux Foundation.

“The Telecommunication 4.0 era features the full convergence of IT and CT; it relies on NFV and SDN as the key technical enablers for automatic deployment and agile operation. OpenDaylight Berylium Hits the Streets

The OpenDaylight Project released Beryllium (Be) - the fourth release of its open source platform for programmable, software-defined networking platform.

New Features in OpenDaylight Beryllium

  • Performance and Scalability: Stronger analysis and testing of clustering (where multiple instances of ODL act as one logical controller) appear in ODL Be. Applications that want to be cluster-aware can choose how to put data across the cluster. For the first time in OpenDaylight, the Be release includes all the components necessary to fully support OpenStack High Availability and Clustering with improved support for Neutron APIs and features. As of the Be release, OpenDaylight enables workload placement on hosts with DPDK-accelerated virtual switches.
  • Ease of Adoption: ODL Be continues to integrate features to improve interoperability for multivendor environments with updates to its microservices architecture and new projects like NetIDE for intent-based network modeling. The NeXt UI feature allows you to better understand OpenDaylight’s functionality through user-friendly visual displays. Updated documentation is available to aid in installation and deployment.
  • Abstracting Network Models: ODL Be includes the widest range of configurations for policy and intent of any controller or platform. Four methods are supported - NEMO, Application Layer Traffic Optimization (ALTO), Group Based Policy (GBP) and Network Intent Composition (NIC) - providing unparalleled flexibility for intent-based management and direction of network services and resources.
  • Broad Set of Use Cases: ODL Be provides SDN use cases for both traditional and greenfield, for service provider and enterprise networks. New services and architectural improvements in Beryllium will enable new use cases in the areas of Cloud and NFV as well as adding scale and flexibility to the traditional use cases in the areas of network resource optimization and automated service delivery.

The OpenDaylight Project Announces Lithium Release

The OpenDaylight Project announced its third open SDN software release -- Lithium.

OpenDaylight is a highly available, modular, extensible, scalable and multi-protocol controller infrastructure built for SDN deployments on modern heterogeneous multi-vendor networks. OpenDaylight provides a model-driven service abstraction platform that allows users to write apps that easily work across a wide variety of hardware and southbound protocols.

Dell Networking Disaggregates its OS from Hardware

As the next step in its Open Networking initiative launched two years ago, Dell Networking introduced its Operating System 10 (OS10), a fully-open, unmodified Linux distribution that will be offered as one of several options for purchasers of Dell data center switches. In addition to its own OS10 network operating system, Dell offers network OSes from its partners, including Big Switch, Cumulus and Pluribus.

The new Dell OS10 is designed to introduce new levels of software flexibility and programmability in large-scale data center environments. OS10 is comprised of a base module and various optional application modules. Some highlights:

OS10 Base Module – The OS10 Base Module is available for free and runs a fully-open, unmodified Linux distribution. Linux is one of the most widely-used operating systems and can provide a common language across multiple IT layers including networking, storage and compute. The OS10 Base Module can leverage the Linux community-based benefits which can help enhance its programmability, portability, and flexibility for the application layer above it.

Below it, the OS10 Base Module employs the Open Compute Project Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI) that enables a common, programmer-friendly language between vendor network operating systems and the particular silicon residing on the physical switch. Today, SAI helps web-scale companies and cloud providers take advantage of the latest silicon innovation by enabling them to program the switches more granularly.

OS10 Application Modules – On top of the base module, OS10 can support traditional networking functions (L2/L3 protocols) from Dell as well as numerous third-party, native Linux, and open source applications such as IP, fabric and security services combined with management and automation tools. This allows customers to tailor IT operations for different use case and operational processes.

Dell Intros New Open Data Center Switches

Dell Networking introduced three new open switches for data centers and featuring support for the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) to allow for a zero-touch install of all pre-qualified operating systems, including Dell Networking OS9 and third party options.


Dell said the rollout reinforces its strategy to pursue open architectures in the new era of software-defined data centers.

"These advancements are another example of Dell helping our customers to future proof and accelerate the financial and performance rewards the software-defined data center promises," said Arpit Joshipura, vice president, product management and strategy, Dell Networking. "The new products announced today offer customers complete flexibility to take advantage of open networking environments and new computing models as well as the revenue streams these network infrastructures will allow."

The rollout includes:

Dell Networking Z9100-ON - a 100GbE fabric switch in a 1RU fixed form factor for aggregation and access layers. It and offers multi-rate switching (10/25/40/50/100GbE). The Z9100 is designed for cloud, HPC and Web 2.0 applications that require a range of options in switching rates in high-density environments and excels in Big Data analysis and where high performance, low latency requirements exist. The fabric switch offers up to seven times the density per RU versus a competing switch.1

Dell Networking S4048-ON - a low-latency 10/40GbE Top-of-Rack (ToR) switch designed for the software-defined data center. It offers advanced features supporting large hardware tables, VXLAN and expanding buffering. It is designed for Web and Cloud service providers with Linux and open source-heavy environments. The S4048 provides a low latency 10GbE switching in HPC and business sensitive deployments that require the highest bandwidth and low latency, while cutting in half the latency versus a competing switch.

Dell Networking S3048-ON - designed for enterprise and mid-market customers with an existing 1GbE installed base. It is Dell’s first entry into 1GbE open networking switching. The S3048 is a ToR equipped with next-generation 1GbE silicon, a complete OS9 feature set including VLT, OpenFlow, Open Automation, Cloud Stack integration with OpenStack, Microsoft, VMware, Docker and others, while offering up to half the power consumption and costs up to 50 percent less than the current generation of Dell 1GbE switches.

Dell today also announced IP Infusion, Inc. as a new ecosystem partner in support of its Open Networking initiative.

Linux Foundation Backs Blockchain for Transaction Verification

The Linux Foundation announced a new collaborative effort to advance blockchain technology.

Blockchain is a digital technology for recording and verifying transactions. The distributed ledger is a permanent, secure tool that makes it easier to create cost-efficient business networks without requiring a centralized point of control. With distributed ledgers, virtually anything of value can be tracked and traded. The application of this emerging technology is showing great promise in the enterprise. For example, it allows securities to be settled in minutes instead of days. It can be used to help companies manage the flow of goods and related payments or enable manufacturers to share production logs with OEMs and regulators to reduce product recalls.

The project will develop an enterprise grade, open source distributed ledger framework and free developers to focus on building robust, industry-specific applications, platforms and hardware systems to support business transactions.

Early commitments to this work come from Accenture, ANZ Bank, Cisco, CLS, Credits, Deutsche Börse, Digital Asset Holdings, DTCC, Fujitsu Limited, IC3, IBM, Intel, J.P. Morgan, London Stock Exchange Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), R3, State Street, SWIFT, VMware and Wells Fargo.

Cloud Native Computing Foundation Opens for Technical Contributions

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which was launched earlier this year to drive the alignment of container technologies, announced its formal open governance structure and new details about its technology stack.

Cloud native applications are container-packaged, dynamically scheduled and microservices-oriented. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation focuses on development of open source technologies, reference architectures and common format for Cloud native applications or services. This work provides the necessary infrastructure for Internet companies and enterprises to scale their businesses.

The foundation's open governance model includes a Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) that will direct technical decisions, oversee working group projects and manage contributions to the code base. The nominations are currently open for TOC members and we encourage everyone to get involved; see the c​ncf-toc mailing list f​or more information. There is also an End User Advisory Board and Board of Directors to guide business decisions and ensure alignment between the technical and end user communities.

The Foundation said is looking at open source at the orchestration level, followed by the integration of hosts and services by defining APIs and standards through a code first approach to advance the state-of-art of container-packaged application infrastructure. The organization is also working with other L​inux Foundation Collaborative Projects, such as the Open Container Initiative, which is establishing the industry standard for container image specification and runtime, and the Cloud Foundry Foundation.

Cloud Native Computing Foundation Seeks Alignment Among Container Technologies

A new Cloud Native Computing Foundation is being launched to drive the alignment of container technologies.  Founding organizations include AT&T, Box, Cisco, Cloud Foundry Foundation, CoreOS, Cycle Computing, Docker, eBay, Goldman Sachs, Google, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Joyent, Kismatic, Mesosphere, Red Hat, Switch SUPERNAP, Twitter, Univa, VMware and Weaveworks.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which is a project managed by The Linux Foundation, aims to advance the state-of-the-art for building cloud native applications and services, allowing developers to take full advantage of existing and to-be-developed open source technologies. Cloud native refers to applications or services that are container-packaged, dynamically scheduled and micro services-oriented.

Specifically, he Foundation will look at open source at the orchestration level, followed by the integration of hosts and services by defining API's and standards through a code first approach to advance the state-of-art of container-packaged application infrastructure. The organization will also work with the recently announced Open Container Initiative on its container image specification. Beyond orchestration and the image specification, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation aims to assemble components to address a comprehensive set of container application infrastructure needs.

Linux Foundation Launches Open API Initiative

The Linux Foundation is launching an Open API Initiative to extend the Swagger specification, which is a description format used by developers to design and deliver APIs that support a range of connected applications and services. Smart bear is making the initial contributions to the Open API. Founding members of the initiative include 3Scale, Apigee, Capital One, Google, IBM, Intuit, Microsoft, PayPal and Restlet.

The goal of the initiative is to extend the Swagger specification and format to create an open technical community within which members can easily contribute to building a vendor neutral, portable and open specification for providing metadata for RESTful APIs. This open specification will allow both humans and computers to discover and understand the capabilities of the respective services with a minimal amount of implementation logic. The Initiative will also promote and facilitate the adoption and use of an open API standard.

“Swagger is considered one of the most popular frameworks for building APIs. When an open source project reaches this level of maturity, it just can’t be managed by one company, organization or developer,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “The Open API Initiative will extend this technology to advance connected application development through open standards.”

Swagger was created in 2010 and offered under an open source license a year later.

ONOS Project Joins Linux Foundation

The initiative to develop the Open source SDN Network Operating System (ONOS) will now be managed as a collaborative project under The Linux Foundation.

The partnership will focus on creating disruptive SDN solutions featuring open source software platforms, white boxes, a range of network control and management applications and the ability to rapidly create and deploy innovative services. By becoming a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project, ONOS will leverage the Foundation’s depth of expertise in open source software project governance and community participation, significantly enhancing the project’s capabilities in the crucial strategic area of open source processes and practices.

The ONOS project and platform includes several compelling SDN/NFV solutions for service providers, a global footprint in Research and Education (R&E) networks and a growing community around the globe.


“Service providers are increasingly adopting open source software to build their networks and today are making open source and collaboration a strategic part of their business and an investment in the future,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation. “The Linux Foundation recognizes the impact the ONOS project can have on service provider networks and will help advance ONOS to achieve its potential. The project has also demonstrated a number of service provider solutions enabled by ONOS such as CORD (Central Office Re-architected as Data Center), packet-optical convergence, SDN-IP peering, and others.

Big Switch, Facebook and NTT Demo Open Network Linux

Big Switch Networks, Facebook and NTT have jointly demonstrated Open Network Linux, integrating key components of the Open Compute Project.

The demonstration and code repository showed pluggable forwarding agents including:

  • FBOSS (used by Facebook) built on Broadcom's OpenNSL Library
  • L3 Routing (used by NTT)
  • OpenFlow (used by Big Switch Networks)

Pluggable forwarding agents are seen as a key innovation in Open Network Linux.

Open Network Linux was originally contributed to OCP by Big Switch Networks, a Gold level member, in March 2014. Hardware compatibility has grown to include 15+ open switch hardware platforms used in hyperscale data centers, including Facebook's Wedge switch and Accton's Edgecore AS5712-54X and AS6712-32X switches, and Dell's 4048 and S6000 open networking switches.

"There is a rich set of switch software components now available as open source via the Open Compute Project's networking track, but the integration was such a challenge that they were really out of reach for most organizations. With Open Network Linux, this is no longer the case," said Rob Sherwood, Big Switch CTO and co-creator of Open Network Linux. "At the same time, I'm proud that this architecture strikes the right balance of shared code and pluggable agents. We are unifying disparate efforts in the hyperscale networking development community without locking anyone into any specific architecture."

Facebook Releases FBOSS Open Switching System


Facebook released its open switching system (code-named “FBOSS”) on GitHub. The initial release consists primarily of the FBOSS agent, a daemon that runs on each switch and manages the hardware forwarding ASIC. ODPi Project Envisions Open Ecosystem for Big Data

ODPi, which is a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project aimed at fostering an open ecosystem of Big Data, announced that membership in the organization has double since it got underway in February.  Members to date represent a diverse group of Big Data solution providers and end users such as Altiscale, Ampool, Capgemini, CenturyLink, DataTorrent, EMC, GE, Hortonworks, IBM, Infosys, Linaro, NEC, Pivotal, PLDT, SAS Institute Inc, Splunk, Squid Solutions, SyncSort, Telstra, Teradata, Toshiba, UNIFi, VMware, WANdisco, Xiilab, zData and Zettaset.

"ODPi is a useful downstream project for the community to work on a common reference platform and set of technologies around Hadoop," said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. "We've seen this model work with open source technologies experiencing rapid growth and know it can increase adoption and open up opportunities for innovation on top of an already strong Hadoop community."

Technical milestones include the release of an initial ODPi core specification and reference implementation that simplifies upstream and downstream qualification efforts and has been created by developers from across the Big Data landscape. More than 35 maintainers from 25 companies are dedicated to this ongoing work to start. The planned ODPi Certification Program is also underway. The goal of ODPi Certification Programs will be to ensure consistency and compatibility across the Big Data ecosystem.

IO Visor Project Aims for Universal In-Kernel Linux VM

A new IO Visor Project has been launched by The Linux Foundation with a mission to advance IO and networking technologies to address new requirements presented by cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV).

The idea is to create a universal in-kernel virtual machine with run-time extensibility -- essentially, "a new type of programmable data plane that enables developers to dynamically build IO modules (think stand alone “programs” that can manipulate a packet in the kernel and perform all sort of functions on it), load and unload those in-kernel at run time and do it without any disruption to the system." The IO modules would be able to run on any hardware that supports Linux.

The core technology behind IO Visor Project is eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filter). The IO Visor Project is supported initially with contributions from PLUMgrid.

Founding members of IO Visor include Barefoot Networks, Broadcom, Canonical, Cavium, Cisco, Huawei, Intel, PLUMgrid and SUSE.

“The ability to modify a Linux kernel at runtime without rebooting the server or entire data center is critical to efficient operation of SDN and NFV technologies,” said Pere Monclus, founder and CTO at PLUMgrid. “As a company that actively supports a number of open source projects, we believe that open sourcing IO Visor through a community hosted with the Linux Foundation was in the best interests of not only our company, but of everyone dependent upon agile and highly performant cloud technologies at scale.”

Red Hat Supports Container-Based Deployment Strategies

Red Hat release a new version of its Satellite systems management solution, adding security capabilities, enhanced discovery and container management capabilities across physical, virtual and cloud environments.

Red Hat Satellite 6.1 brings users significant upgrades in three key areas:

  • Container management
  • Security
  • Provisioning
  • Container Management

The core capabilities of Satellite 6.1 provide Docker with more control around versioning, authentication and integration with existing platforms. A scalable on-premise registry based with Role-Based Access Controls, auditing and a robust API are now available for developers seeking to manage systems in a container-based environment.

Satellite 6.1 brings upgrades to errata management, allowing users to address security, bugfix and enhancement errata. Improved reporting now enables organizations to more quickly identify and respond to hosts affected by a security vulnerability, minimizing downtime and sensitive data exposure in vulnerability scenarios such as those presented by Shellshock, Heartbleed and GHOST. Additionally, OpenSCAP, a standardized approach to maintaining enterprise system security, is now available in tech preview. OpenSCAP automatically verifies the presence of patches, checks system security configuration settings and examines systems for signs of compromise in daily/weekly/monthly cadences that can be customized by end users to best fit their own internal security protocols.

Red Hat Releases Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 7 based on Kilo

Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 7 was released, featuring a new deployment and management tool to simplify installation, ease day-to-day management tasks, and establish the underpinnings for orchestrated live system updates and upgrades for subsequent releases.

Based on the OpenStack community “Kilo” release, Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform is a co-engineered solution that starts with the proven and trusted foundation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and integrates with Red Hat’s OpenStack technology to form a production-ready cloud platform.

Version 7 includes several new features aimed at accelerating the adoption of OpenStack including:


  • Simplified deployment and management -  the new Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform director offers a simplified and automated cloud installation tool with system-wide health checking for a proper deployment. It offers an automated “ready-state” provisioning of bare-metal resources to simplify the deployment and repurposing of hardware resources on an on-demand basis. Based on the community-driven OpenStack management project TripleO, the new director combines multiple technologies to offer a single powerful tool which also establishes a new framework that can be used for live orchestrated OpenStack and director upgrades for version 7 and subsequent releases.
  • Traditional workloads requiring high availability on OpenStack - introduces compute host node high availability through integrated, automated monitoring and failover services from Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This new capability monitors host nodes and includes the ability to automatically evacuate virtual machines from hosts, restarting workloads on alternate, available hosts.
  • Greater security control - Telco customers now have greater granularity and control over network traffic ports at the virtual machine level. This allows customers to maintain a tightened security level over the greater OpenStack cloud, while allowing virtualized network function (VNF) traffic through each virtual machine, as necessary. Version 7 introduces this via the Neutron modular layer 2 (ML2) and Open vSwitch (OVS) port security mechanisms included in the community Kilo release.
  • Network flexibility - New Neutron networking features offer greater flexibility and improved network redundancy. Network operators can benefit from several IPv6 enhancements, including the ability to support direct network routing between tenants and the external gateway. In addition, version 7 expands the high availability for Neutron routers and improves the monitoring and reporting of the router to help network operators maintain uptime.
  • Incremental Backup - Storage administrators can now benefit from faster block storage backups and reduced capacity needs with support for snapshot-based backups. With added support for NFS and POSIX file system types, this significantly reduces the amount of storage and time required, by backing up only the incremental changes since the last full state backup.

Cumulus Releases VX Virtual Appliance Edition of its Linux OS

Cumulus Networks releasesd a free virtual appliance designed to simulate its traditional Cumulus Linux operating system environment for open networking.

Cumulus said its VX (Virtual Experience) provides a way for data center cloud administrators and network engineers to learn, prototype and develop open networking concepts at their own pace, in their own environments. Cumulus VX operates without the need for a bare metal switch or specialized hardware and runs on all popular hypervisors. It is not intended for production usage but allows networking experts to test and configure traditional networking protocols like BGP and MLAG as well as Cumulus Networks-specific technologies such as Prescriptive Topology Manager (PTM).

Open Container Initiative Gains Early Traction

The Open Container Initiative (previously known as the Open Container Project) published its draft charter for comment and announced that 11 new companies are joining this industry-wide initiative to develop common standards for software containers. The OCI, which was announced just last month at DockerCon and is being hosted at The Linux Foundation as a Collaborative Project.

Companies signaling their formal commitment to this effort include AT&T, ClusterHQ, Datera, Kismatic, Kyup, Midokura, Nutanix, Oracle, Polyverse, Resin.io, Sysdig, SUSE, Twitter and Verizon. Amazon Web Services, Apcera, Cisco, CoreOS, Docker, EMC, Fujitsu Limited, Goldman Sachs, Google, HP, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Joyent, Mesosphere, Microsoft, Pivotal, Rancher Labs, Red Hat and VMware are also committed to the Open Container Initiative.

As part of the formation, Docker Inc. donated its base container format at runtime to serve as cornerstone technologies under the governance of the OCI, while leadership from Application Container spec (“appc”) is also represented.

The OCI said work is underway on the draft specification, which is expected to be available for community comment within the month.

“The overwhelming interest in the Open Container Initiative is representative of both the opportunity containers offer for application development and the challenges we face with fragmentation,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. “With such strong community support and collaboration, we’re confident this effort will rise to the opportunity.”
