DOCOMO and Sumitomo Electric test real-time traffic monitoring with 5G

Sumitomo Electric Industries and NTT DOCOMO are looking to 5G to power the real-time collection and delivery of traffic information using high-definition sensors.

Tests, which are being conducted at a course within the Yokohama Works of Sumitomo Electric, use sensors installed along the course and in vehicles.
Traffic information is analyzed in real time and then fed back to drivers and pedestrians.

The vehicles are also equipped with DOCOMO 5G terminals that communicate with DOCOMO 5G base stations at the course.

Sumitomo Electric and DOCOMO will continue to develop their advanced driving-assistance system based on 5G mobile communications.

DOCOMO Pacific ATISA Guam subsea cable ready for service

DOCOMO Pacific, a service provider in the Marianas and a subsidiary of Japan's NTT DOCOMO, announced that construction and testing of the 183-mile ATISA submarine optical cable system connecting Guam to the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) has been completed and the system is now ready for service.

The ATISA submarine cable, for which a supply contract was signed in February 2016, was recently landed and connected to the terrestrial fibre networks on Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota. The system will be launched with an initial operating capacity of 200 Gbit/s, while offering a total design capacity of 7.2 Tbit/s.

DOCOMO Pacific will now begin providing connectivity services to enterprise customers, and stated that it is already serving its first enterprise partner, the Commonwealth Port Authority, which operates the Francisco C. Ada Saipan international airport, with high-speed Internet connectivity. ATISA also connects the CNMI with Guam, where local businesses and government agencies can connect to other cable systems.

Additionally, from August this year, DOCOMO Pacific plans to start offering mobile, cable TV, online and home telephone services for residential customers in the CNMI.

For the ATISA cable system, DOCOMO Pacific selected NEC to design and build the cable and Ciena's submarine GeoMesh solution to provide 100 Gbit/s wavelengths and to facilitate the delivery of new on-demand services for end users. The Ciena solution is designed to offer scalability to support communications requirements over the lifetime of the cable.

Additionally, Ocean Specialists (OSI), a submarine optical cable consulting firm, advised DOCOMO Pacific on the project and provided project management support.


DOCOMO Pacific noted that ATISA is the second undersea cable in the CNMI and the first new system to be built in nearly twenty years. The company stated that the cable system involved investment of over $16 million for the cable, plus an additional $9 million to modernise and expand its fixed and mobile networks in the CNMI.

NTT DOCOMO Outlines a Medium-term Strategy

NTT DOCOMO outlined six principles that will constitute its new medium-term strategy through the 2020 fiscal year.  The six declarations are aimed at fostering an innovative business structure in the coming era of 5G.

The six declarations of DOCOMO's new plan are as follows:

Market leader - DOCOMO aims to lead the market in value propositions by further integrating and evolving its services, actively returning value to customers through a wide array of tangible benefits, including strengthened loyalty programs and attractive billing plans. By fiscal 2020, the total number of "d POINT" partners will be increased to more than 300 partners, with the aim of establishing "d POINT" as one of Japan's largest point programs.

Style innovation - Leveraging the strengths of 5G, DOCOMO will launch a wide range of exciting and unexpected services under a company-wide project called "empower+d challenge" (empowered challenge), which will enable customers to realize their aspirations and achieve greater affluence. In particular, through the creative application of virtual reality, artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT technologies, DOCOMO will offer all-new innovation for customer experiences, lifestyles and work styles.

Peace of mind and comfort support - DOCOMO will use AI to develop all-new customer contact points for the provision of optimal, stress-free support for each customer, anytime and anywhere, with a special emphasis on reducing customer wait times. A new system will enable customers to consult their smartphones about a wide range of issues, and measures for enhanced communication will be implemented for issues requiring specialized assistance.

Industry creation - DOCOMO, the leader in emerging 5G technologies and services, will collaborate with partners across a wide range of industries to contribute to social and industrial development through 5G technologies. From late May 2017, 5G trial sites will be launched to enable partner companies and DOCOMO to collaborate in creating standard-setting new services that leverage 5G strengths including low latency, ultra-high speed, ultra-large capacity and massive device connectivity.

Solution co-creation - DOCOMO also will collaborate with partners in six key fields-primary industries, education, sports, healthcare, mobility and work style reform-aiming to contribute to further growth and prosperity in Japan, including through the vitalization of regional economies. In the case of work style reform, collaborations will facilitate telework environments and share offices, to be introduced this year.

Partner business expansion - The plan's sixth declaration is the further enhancement and evolution of DOCOMO's business platforms for loyalty points, customer referrals, FinTech, AI agents, IoT, drones and other business areas, which partners will use to expand transaction flows, develop new business and realize higher levels of productivity.

NTT DOCOMO Works with Qualcomm and Ericsson on 5G NR trials

NTT DOCOMO plans to conduct interoperability testing and over-the-air field trials in Japan based on the 5G New Radio (NR) specifications being developed by 3GPP. The trials will operate in mid-band spectrum at 4.5 GHz, as well as millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum at 28 GHz, showcasing the unified 5G NR design across diverse spectrum bands. The trials intend to drive the mobile ecosystem toward rapid validation and commercialization of 5G NR technologies at scale, enabling timely commercial network launches based on 3GPP Rel-15 standard compliant 5G NR infrastructure and devices.

The trials will utilize device prototype and base station solutions from Qualcomm Technologies and Ericsson respectively, along with trial environments from NTT DOCOMO, to simulate real-world scenarios across a broad set of use cases and deployment scenarios. The trial will include 5G NR operation at 4.5 GHz, which allows a large bandwidth resulting in high data rates and good capacity with reasonable coverage to address the large number of envisioned 5G use cases.

The trial will showcase advanced 3GPP 5G NR technologies including Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna technology, beamforming techniques, adaptive self-contained TDD, scalable OFDM-based waveforms to support wider bandwidths, advanced coding and modulation schemes, and a new flexible, low-latency slot structure based design. In addition, the trial will include 5G NR operation in mmWave spectrum at 28 GHz, employing advanced 5G NR antenna technology to deliver robust and sustained mobile broadband communications, including non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments and device mobility.

Cisco to Automate NTT DOCOMO’s Network Device Provisioning

Cisco is supplying its Network Services Orchestrator to help NTT DOCOMO carry out network device provisioning and transform its service lifecycle.

Cisco noted that DOCOMO deployed a network functions virtualization (NFV) system last year, but due to the complexity and time-consuming operations with network device provisioning, it has taken the initiative to fully improve its business efficiency by applying “automation” to various operations.

The Cisco Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) software platform will help DOCOMO realize a series of new benefits, including:

  • Cut service activation times from days to hours
  • Create, modify, and remove services in real time
  • Automate its service lifecycle and reduce manual configuration steps by up to 90 percent
  • Easily bundle multiple network services fast, and help ensure them in real time
  • Manage network changes, modify services, and reconfigure devices while in live production


“By converting existing manual construction workflow into automated operation with the Cisco NSO implementation, we aim to lower our overall network device provisioning operations and time drastically, and achieve smooth transition to commercialized network operation by reducing configuration error,” said Dr. Atsushi Murase, director, executive general manager of Solution Service Division, DOCOMO Technology, Inc. “This will enable us to simplify network operations while gaining improved efficiency to respond to operational requirements to provide high quality and reliable services to our customers.”

DOCOMO Partners with China's CAICT on 5G

NTT DOCOMO and the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology (CAICT) agreed to jointly investigate the standardization of 5G technologies and available frequency bands.

CAICT, a national research organization directly under the Provincial Government of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, is in charge of policies and standardization strategies on information and communication in China.

Under the MOU, DOCOMO will participate in the 5G Trial launched by the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group to verify 5G technologies and systems. The group is driving research and development to help standardize 5G technologies in China as quickly as possible. During the trial, DOCOMO and CAICT will also study a possible frequency bands for 5G networks.

NTT Docomo Cites 5G Progress with Samsung, Huawei

In a test conducted with Samsung Electronics earlier this month at Fuji Speedway, a motorsport racing circuit in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, NTT DOCOMO achieved a data speed of more than 2.5Gbps with a mobile device that was in a vehicle travelling 150km/h. The company said this trial verified the feasibility of stable connectivity for 5G mobile devices in fast-moving trains. Transmissions were conducted using the 28GHz high-frequency band, one of the candidate bands that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is considering to designate for commercial 5G networks in Japan.

DOCOMO said the problem of large path-loss of high-frequency radio signals was overcome with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies that incorporate beamforming, which concentrates radio waves in a specific direction, and beam tracking, which adjusts the beam according to the fast-moving mobile device's location.

In a separate undertaking, DOCOMO conducted an outdoor data-transmission trial with Huawei from October 3 to 26. It was carried out in a field measuring 100,000 square meters, equivalent to 12 soccer pitches, in the Minato Mirai 21 waterfront of Yokohama. The trial involved 23 simultaneously connected mobile devices and achieved a cumulative 11.29Gbps of data throughput and latency below 0.5 milliseconds using the 4.5GHz frequency band.

The trial combined multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) technology for simultaneous multiple access and a precoding algorithm that optimizes signals for maximized performance and also limits inter-user interference. It achieved a MU-MIMO transmission of a maximum 79.82bps/Hz/cell, which was 1.8 times more efficient than an outdoor trial conducted in China in November 2015.
The successful outcomes of these trials will be exhibited at DOCOMO R&D Open House 2016 at the DOCOMO R&D Center in the Yokosuka Research Park near Yokohama, Japan on November 17 and 18.

DOCOMO Tests Real Time 8K Video over 5G with Nokia

NTT DOCOMO successfully tested the real time transmission of 8K video over a 5G communications system.

The trial, which was jointly conducted with Nokia on May 19, employed H.265/HEVC encoding techniques developed by NTT Media Intelligence Laboratories. The trial system used beam-tracking techniques to transmit millimeter wavelength signals at an extremely high frequency of 70GHz.  The 8K video signals were ingested at 48 Gbps — a bit rate four times greater than 4K video and 32 times than Full HD — and then compressed by the encoder into signals ranging from 145 Mbps to 85 Mbps and successfully transmitted without delay.

DOCOMO and Nokia have been collaborating since May 2014 to develop radio access technologies for future 5G mobile networks. Recent achievements include ultra-high-speed data transmission in excess of 2Gbps at the Roppongi Hills high-rise complex in Tokyo.

DOCOMO Invests in Expway for Wireless Multicasting

NTT DOCOMO Ventures has made a strategic investment of EUR 1.5 million in Expway for its wireless multicast solutions. Expway’s current investors, Innovation Capital, I-Source, TechFund and Isatis Capital also invested EUR 1.5 million in this round.

Expway’s newly announced Ultimate Mobile CDN solution optimizes data traffic between the telecom cells and the terminals using LTE Broadcast. In addition, Expway’s solution will also be made available on Wi-Fi networks to enhance video delivery in highly dense areas.

Cisco ACI Anchors NTT Docomo's NFV Rollout

Cisco confirmed that its Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) is being used to support the NFV capabilities recently rolled out in  NTT DOCOMO commercial LTE network. DOCOMO serves over 70 million mobile customers in Japan. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NTT DOCOMO Deploys NFV with NEC in Commercial Network

NEC confirmed that NTT DOCOMO has deployed its NFV solutions, including virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) and a Virtual Network Function Manager (VNF Manager), in its commercial networks.

On March 9, DOCOMO started providing its commercial mobile communication service by using the NFV technologies.

The vEPC virtualizes the functions of a LTE core network, including the Mobility Management Entity (MME), the Serving Gateway (S-GW), and the Packet Data Network-Gateway (P-GW). A VNF Manager from Netcracker, a wholly owned NEC subsidiary, handles lifecycle events, such as creation, activation, termination and update of virtualized Network Functions (VNF).

To maximize benefit of NFV, DOCOMO expects to virtualize many other key components of its mobile network, aiming to eventually establish a fully virtualized network. Ericsson Supports Multi-vendor NFV for NTT DOCOMO

Ericsson announced that its open NFV platform is supporting the multi-vendor solution deployed in the commercial network of NTT DOCOMO. The launch represents the first commercial deployment of this kind in the world.

The Ericsson NFV platform provides interoperability and connectivity with any carrier class virtualized network function and SDN. Based on an open architecture, the solution consists of the OpenStack-based Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment as the virtualization platform and the NFV orchestrator, Ericsson Cloud Manager. In addition, Ericsson provided system integration and support services.  The solution initially supports a multi-vendor virtual EPC deployment.

DOCOMO Partners with Mediatek on 5G Access

NTT DOCOMO is working with MediaTek of Taiwan to jointly develop and conduct trials of technology that will enable increased data capacity for 5G systems.

The trials, which will be conducted in either Taiwan or Japan from 2017 onwards, will develop a communication system to combine non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) wireless access technologies from DOCOMO and multi-user interference cancellation (MUIC) technologies from MediaTek. NOMA multiplexes signals at a base-station transmitter to leverage the increased signal processing capacity of a user device to cancel interference among multiplexed user signals. MUIC utilizes receiver antennas to remove interference from other users and increase capacity when a base station transmits a signal to a number of users at the same time.

The two companies will also study a new 5G Radio Access Technology and chipsets required for 5G devices, with joint trials to be carried out from 2018 onwards.

#MWC16: DOCOMO Runs EPC in its Own NFV

NTT DOCOMO has developed its own network function virtualization (NFV) technology that can run Evolved Packet Core (EPC) software from multiple vendors to enhance connectivity in high-volume areas. DOCOMO plans to deploy the technology on its network starting this March.

DOCOMO said it expects to virtualize many other key components of its mobile network, aiming at eventually establishing a fully virtualized network.

“Multi-vendor NFV technology, once regarded as pie in the sky, will now be deployed commercially on our mobile network,” said Seizo Onoe, DOCOMO’s Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. “Many NFV technologies already deployed still rely on single vendor, so we expect this truly multi-vendor NFV technology will be a long-awaited game-changer in the mobile industry’s ecosystem.”

DOCOMO's 5G Trials Hit Multiple Gigabits Rates

NTT DOCOMO announced results from several recent 5G trials, each of which surpassed the gigabit barrier.  Some highlights:

  • A 5G trial it conducted with Nokia Networks at the Roppongi Hills high-rise complex in Tokyo on October 13 achieved data transmission in excess of 2Gbps. The trial used millimeter-wavelength signals with an extremely high frequency of 70GHz, a key development for the eventual commercial use of 5G wireless technology in actual-use environments. To date, no test had achieved a 5G data transmission in a commercial complex, such as a shopping mall, due to problems with base stations being out of line of sight and diffused reflections causing the attenuation of highly directional millimeter signals. This time, however, the trial was successful thanks to the use of two new technologies: beamforming, which focuses radio waves in a specific direction, and beam tracking to control beam direction according to the mobile device's location.
  • A 5G trial with Samsung Electronics in Suwon-city, South Korea on November 12 achieved a maximum data-receiving speed of more than 2.5Gbps.  This was accomplished in a vehicle travelling with a speed of 60km/h. The trial used a 28GHz high-frequency signal in combination with beamforming with a high number of antenna elements and beam tracking.
  • A 5G trial with Ericsson verified the feasibility of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology by achieving a real-time data-receiving speed of more than 10Gbps using Ericsson 5G radio prototypes with a 15GHz frequency band on November 19.
  • A 5G trial with Fujitsu confirmed a multi-base-station cooperative transmission system by achieving a data-receiving speed of over 11Gbps in total of four mobile devices with a 4.6GHz signal on October 26.
  • A 5G outdoor data transmission trial conducted by DOCOMO, DOCOMO Beijing Communications Laboratories and Huawei Technologies on November 18 achieved a multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) transmission of 43.9bps/Hz/cell, which was 3.6-times more efficient than past outdoor trials of LTE-Advanced based MU-MIMO technology.

Huawei and DOCOMO Demo LTE LAA and Wi-Fi Co-existence

Huawei and NTT DOCOMO performed a live demonstration of the co-channel coexistence between Licensed-Assisted Access (LAA) and Wi-Fi systems.

The demo, which occurred at the 5G Tokyo Bay Summit 2015 held at the DOCOMO R&D Center in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, showed LAA operating on a 5GHz unlicensed band.

Huawei said results indicated that with the assistance of a key co-existing technology named Listen-Before-Talk (LBT), LAA is able to co-exist adequately with a neighboring Wi-Fi system, while maintaining most of the performance advantages of LTE.

DOCOMO Expands 5G Collaboration Program

NTT DOCOMO is expanding its industry collaboration program for 5G.  The company announced individual collaborations with five additional vendors: Intel, Keysight Technologies, Panasonic Corporation, Qualcomm Technologies, and Rohde & Schwarz GmbH & Co.

DOCOMO and its vendor-partners expect to begin technical discussions and various indoor trials at the DOCOMO R&D Center in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture within the current fiscal year ending in March 2016. The trials will expand to outdoor settings thereafter. Key findings and achievements will be shared with global research bodies and at international conferences. Through the collaborations, DOCOMO expects to evaluate and verify its proprietary 5G technologies and thereby accelerate 5G standardization.

Since May 2014, DOCOMO has been working with a number of other vendors, including Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Nokia and Samsung.

DOCOMO said it aims to introduce 5G on a commercial basis in 2020. 5G is being developed for ultra-high-speed data transmissions of over 10Gbps and 1,000 times the capacity of LTE, which will help address the proliferation of connected items in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT), as well as to support the increasingly diverse range of mobile services.

DOCOMO to Integrate Mobile Services with Facebook

NTT DOCOMO plans to integrate its "dmarket" services with Facebook's social networking functions.

Starting this summer, DOCOMO will enable music from its "dhits" music-streaming service to be shared with friends on Facebook. In addition, from Facebook's News Feed, people will be able to listen to music samples and then easily access full-length versions on dhits or purchase songs at dmusicTM.

In view of its 2020 planning, Docomo expects its forthcoming 5G deployments will pave the way for partners to develop innovative services around its platform.

NTT DOCOMO Hits 4.5Gbps in 5G Outdoor Trial

NTT DOCOMO achieved a maximum data transmission speed of over 4.5 Gbps using the high-frequency 15GHz spectrum band in a 5G outdoor trial that was conducted last month with Ericsson.

DOCOMO said it its targetting deployment of a commercial 5G network by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in July 2020.

In a separate indoor 5G trial with Nokia Networks on December 18, 2014 to verify beamforming, a technique for more stable high-speed data transmission using exceptionally higher frequencies in the 70GHz band, DOCOMO achieved data transmissions of over 2 Gbps.

DOCOMO also announced that it has agreed with its two newest partners, Huawei and Mitsubishi Electric, to conduct technical verifications of emerging 5G mobile communications technologies using various frequency bands, including lower than 6GHz and extremely high frequencies, called millimeter waves. In total, DOCOMO's 5G trials now encompass eight blue-chip mobile technology vendors, also including Alcatel-Lucent, Fujitsu, NEC and Samsung.

NTT DOCOMO Anticipates NFV Rollout Starting in March 2016

NTT DOCOMO is planning for a commercial deployment of network functions virtualisation (NFV) technology its mobile network in Japan from March 2016.

At last week's Mobile World Congress, DOCOMO confirmed that it is working on NFV with three ICT vendors—Ericsson, Fujitsu and NEC.

NTT said Ericsson composes the system that controls the virtualized hardware, whereas Fujitsu and NEC compose virtualized EPC software.

"NFV, which has finally moved into its commercial phase, is no longer just a pie-in-the-sky idea," said Seizo Onoe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at DOCOMO. "Through multi-vendor initiatives with Ericsson, Fujitsu and NEC and other leading vendors in the NFV domain, we look forward to putting NFV to practical use and thereby helping to accelerate the transition to a new era for mobile networks."

Anders Lindblad, Senior Vice President, Head of Business Unit Cloud and IP at Ericsson, said: "Ericsson is delighted to partner with DOCOMO to contribute to an advance effort for commercialization of NFV. By providing a platform for execution and orchestration of cloud services, we will contribute to enabling the realization of a virtualized network in a multivendor environment led by DOCOMO."
