Motorola Tunes its Remote Mgt for Multi-Screen Digital Homes
Motorola Mobility is introducing a new "EDGE" Service Assurance Software Suite for activating, provisioning, maintaining and supporting all broadband services in multi-screen digital homes.
Motorola's EDGE Manager remote management software platform (formerly Motorola NBBS) is a multi-protocol management solution that supports Broadband Forum's TR-069, SNMP, OMA-DM,WIB, Telnet and HTTP DL Server protocols.
This provides operators with expanded visibility into a range of consumer equipment (including Motorola and third-party modems, gateways, set-tops and mobile devices) and enables them to manage those devices' usage and performance parameters from a single control point. It also integrates into operator's existing OSS and billing systems.

Taiwan's Chunghwa Selects D-Link/Ikanos Equipment
Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest telecommunications operator, has selected Ikanos-based VDSL2 central office (CO) products and customer premises equipment (CPE) from D-Link for its high-speed multimedia service deployments. The Ikanos-based modems and IP DSLAMs are being utilized by Chunghwa Telecom in its next-generation fiber and VDSL network deployment, planned for roll out in the second half of 2010.
D-Link is using Ikanos' Fusiv Vx180 communications processor in its VDSL2 modem, the DSL-6541K. Ikanos' Fusiv Vx180 is a low-power, single-chip communications processor that incorporates a MIPS-based CPU core capable of 500 MHz processing speeds, digital signal processor (DSP)-based VoIP capabilities and security.
D-Link's DEV-3726K 24-port IP DSLAMs being deployed by Chunghwa Telecom include Ikanos' low power broadband DSL CO chipsets. These chipsets incorporate Ikanos Quality Video (iQV) technology -– a combination of ITU G.inp compliant retransmission and Rapid Rate Adaptation (advanced ITU-T compliant SOS, SRA and Bitswap) technologies. This enables the chipset to intelligently adjust its data rate instantly to provide optimal quality in any line condition. Ikanos said that even in very noisy conditions, its iQV maintains image quality with no degradation. Additionally, the chipsets support 100 Mbps symmetrical performance and enhanced impulse noise protection (INP) schemes. ...

Verizon Tests Motorola's Energy-Efficient sTB -- 30% Power Savings
Verizon is testing new set-top boxes from Motorola that are up to 30 percent more energy efficient than current models, with one new model offering double the amount of storage capacity for digital video recordings.
Verizon will begin trialing the two new models, the Motorola QIP7232 and Motorola QIP7100, in select FiOS TV markets later this year. The QIP7232, the DVR model, boasts a faster processor and more memory.
"The new green Motorola set-tops are an outgrowth of Verizon's efforts to create our own industry-leading energy-efficiency standards and to grow our business responsibly," said James Gowen, chief sustainability officer for Verizon. "These set-tops will provide a better viewing and multimedia experience for our customers, while helping them lower their energy consumption and utility bills." ...

Cisco to Acquire DVN Set-Top Box Business
Cisco agreed to acquire the set-top box business of DVN (Holdings) Limited, a Hong Kong-listed company offering digital cable solutions in China, for up to $44.5 million. The deal covers the set-top box business of DVN.
The Chinese cable market is currently the largest in the world with 160 million subscribers and is predicted to grow to as many as 200 million over the next three to five years. Currently, only about one-third of the market has converted to digital cable. With the Chinese government mandating full digitization by 2015, this represents an important long-term opportunity for Cisco.
In addition to the acquisition, Cisco has entered into a go-to-market alliance with the remainder of the DVN organization -- which will continue to be led by current DVN CEO Terry Lui -- in order to utilize the company's middleware and advanced applications as well as integration and support services. The alliance will provide joint customers with unparalleled end-to-end capabilities through the evolution from basic digital broadcast to advanced interactive services.
Under the deal, approximately $17.5 million will be paid up front, with an additional maximum amount of $27 million to be paid over four years based on the achievement of specific sales milestones. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of calendar year 2010 subject to standard closing conditions, DVN shareholder approval and regulatory approvals.
"Cisco and DVN have similar cultures that emphasize video innovation and a shared vision to enable multi-media connected homes across China," said Ken Klaer, vice president and general manager, International Cable Business Unit at Cisco. "With this acquisition, we will offer customers the powerful combination of DVN's products with the Cisco IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) platform, and Cisco will be well positioned to engage in the largest digital transformation opportunity in the world today."
Upon completion of the transaction, the DVN set-top box business will become a part of the International Cable Business Unit within the Service Provider Video Technology Group (SPVTG) at Cisco led by Klaer. Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies expect to work together with the aim of providing uninterrupted service to set-top box customers and to prepare for an orderly transfer of the business. ...
