Basically, GMPLS allows service
providers to shift their focus to the creation and
acceleration of new services and minimize the large investment
currently being made to support operations. Figure 2 shows a
GMPLS-based new generation metro optical network. Using a
simple, network management system (NMS)-based, point-and-click
provisioning mechanism, the intelligent Metro Optical Network
(iMON) will first signal a request for an LSP and, upon
confirmation, dynamically set up the requested path.

While it is
too early to concretely quantify the cost savings provided by
GMPLS, industry reports (RHK) suggest a service provider can
save over 80% of its operating time and costs with an
intelligent optical mesh metro network. The savings in time,
from the point of service order receipt to rollout, are shown
in Figure 3.
