Clearwire Offers Pay-As-You-Go Mobile Broadband, $5/Day
Clearwire launched a pay-as-you-go 4G mobile broadband service with daily, weekly and monthly payment options. The Clearwire "Rover" service, which will be marketed at tech-savvy Gen Y customers, offers unlimited data usage with no bandwidth caps over the company's WiMAX network.

Rover is available in all of Clearwire's 49 4G markets across the U.S. at rover.com. Rover is also available at CLEAR stores, Best Buy stores and select independent wireless dealers in Houston and St. Louis.

Clearwire is betting that the market for prepaid mobile services in the U.S. is expanding beyond consumers with credit issues. The company believes there will be a growing segment, especially among younger consumers, who wish to be connected with mobile broadband wherever they go, but who prefer simplicity over a long-term contract.

"Simple, commitment-free wireless services are wildly popular with the Gen Y crowd, and Rover provides them with the first pay-as-you-go unlimited mobile internet offering at 4G speeds," said Mike Sievert, chief commercial officer for Clearwire.

Rover's flagship device is the Rover Puck: a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that lets the user share broadband access, or "Puck", with up to eight devices or friends in Wi-Fi range. The Rover Puck promises mobile download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps, with bursts over 10 Mbps. The device is priced at $149.99 (plus tax). Clearwire will also offer a 4G USB modem for $99.99 (plus tax).

Airspan to Resell LightSquared LTE for SmartGrid Backhaul
Airspan Networks announced an agreement to exclusively market LightSquared's 1.4 GHz wireless spectrum for Smart Grid and Smart Utility applications. Specifically, Airspan will market the 1.4 GHz wireless backhaul solution, including spectrum, equipment and services for Smart Grid applications in the electric, gas and water utility sectors in the United States. The 1.4 GHz licensed spectrum will be managed by Airspan and will be made available to utilities in their distinct geographic markets. Access to this spectrum will enable utilities to establish optimized proprietary grid management networks.

The companies said that until now, access to licensed spectrum has been a critical "missing link" in planning and implementing wireless Smart Grid communications for middle-mile backhaul applications and for last-mile access.

"The combination of equipment and licensed spectrum eliminates the problem of relying on interference susceptible shared frequencies for mission critical applications," said Paul Senior, Chief Technical Officer, Airspan.

MetroPCS' Q2 Revenues at $1 Billion, Up 18% YoY
MetroPCS Communications reported quarterly revenue of $1.0 billion, an increase of approximately 18% over second quarter of 2009. MetroPCS finished the quarter with 7.6 million mobile subscribers.

"The outstanding operational and financial results for the second quarter were primarily a result of strong net subscriber additions and lower churn primarily driven by continued acceptance of our Wireless for All plans. Strong operational results and net subscriber growth of approximately 1.4 million subscribers over the past 12 months resulted in record consolidated Adjusted EBITDA for the company of over $322 million, up approximately 38% from the second quarter 2009. We continue to build our 4G LTE network, and we are currently testing in selected metropolitan areas. We are on track for our initial 4G LTE launch in selected metropolitan areas in the second half of this year. Our goal is to provide our pay-in-advance subscribers a 4G experience equivalent to that which will be enjoyed by traditional post-pay customers," said Roger D. Linquist, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MetroPCS.

Optus Australia Tests LTE 2100 MHz, Acquires Licences
SingTel's Optus division has tested LTE operating in 2100 MHz spectrum using equipment from Nokia Siemens Networks.

The field testing, which occurred in Sydney, Australia, used pre-commercial LTE USB dongles over 10 MHz of spectrum. The test achieved peak download speeds of over 50 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps. The companies also noted that the LTE trials, conducted in metropolitan Sydney, showed significantly reduced network latency, improved connectivity and enhanced mobile streaming capabilities when compared to 3G. Lab tests reached speeds of up to 73Mbps over 10 MHz of spectrum.

The LTE trials were part of Optus ongoing commitment to Australian consumers and businesses to deliver a stable, reliable and robust mobile network service to improve the user experience.

Separately, Optus announced that it is the first mobile network operator to successfully acquire new regional spectrum licences in a combination of 10 MHz and 5 MHz of paired spectrum in the 2100MHz band at almost 1000 sites across regional Australia. This includes Bendigo in Victoria; Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Townsville in Queensland; Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and Port Macquarie in New South Wales.

The spectrum acquisition in regional areas complements Optus' recent acquisition from Qualcomm of an additional 10 MHz paired spectrum in the 2100 MHz band in all eight capital cities.

"The release of this regional spectrum, in advance of expected new spectrum allocations in the 700MHz and 2.5GHz bands in the coming years, will help us to continue to transform the playing field in the regional communications market. As well as strengthening Optus' position to challenge the incumbent by improving capacity and coverage in previously under-serviced areas," stated Andrew Buay, Managing Director, Optus Products and Delivery.

AT&T Updates Mobile Data Pricing, Eliminating Unlimited Plan
AT&T updated its mobile data pricing plans to eliminate the option of unlimited data, including for iPhone users, while lowering the monthly cost for the majority of users. Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension. AT&T is also providing unlimited access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can also use unlimited Wi-Fi at home, in the office or elsewhere if available.

The new AT&T plans are:
  • DataPlus. Provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data for $15 per month. This plan, which can save customers up to 50 percent off their wireless data charges. If customers exceed 200 MB in a monthly billing cycle, they will receive an additional 200 MB of data usage for $15 for use in the cycle. Currently, 65 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month on average.
  • DataPro. Provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data for $25 per month. Should a customer exceed 2 GB during a billing cycle, they will receive an additional 1 GB of data for $10 for use in the cycle. Currently, 98 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 2 GB of data a month on average.
  • Tethering. Smartphone customers – including iPhone customers – who choose the DataPro plan have the option to add tethering for an additional $20 per month. Tethering lets customers use their smartphones as a modem to provide a broadband connection for laptop computers, netbooks or other computing devices. Tethering for iPhones will be available when Apple releases iPhone OS 4 this summer.
  • iPad. A new $25 per month 2 GB plan will replace the existing $29.99 unlimited plan. iPad customers will continue to pre-pay for their wireless data plan and no contract is required. Existing iPad customers who have the $29.99 per month unlimited plan can keep that plan or switch to the new $25 per month plan with 2 GB of data.
  • Customer Text Notifications On Data Usage. When customers begin to approach their monthly usage limit, AT&T will send three text notifications – after they reach 65 percent, 90 percent and 100 percent of the threshold. Customers will also be sent emails if AT&T has their email address.

Verizon Wireless Sees LTE Changing Usage and Pricing Patterns
Pricing structure is one of the ways that LTE will change the mobile broadband game, said Lowell McAdam, Verizon Communications - EVP, President and CEO Verizon Wireless, speaking at the Barclay Capital conference this week.

The 700 MHz C-Block spectrum will prove to a strategic advantage for the company, said McAdam, especially since it will not have to piece together different bands for different markets across the country. Verizon Wireless has LTE trials running in Boston, Seattle and Erie, Pennsylvania, where some rural applications are being tested.

The LTE trials have proven what physics predicted -- the 700 MHz spectrum is delivering excellent in-building penetration, which will also be good for machine-to-machine applications. Verizon Wireless estimates that it will get up to 3.5X the penetrating power of its competitors.

As for the expected average downlinks of the upcoming service, Verizon Wireless has been discussing figures of about 7 Mbps. McAdam said this number is conservative -- especially in light of theoretical numbers of 120 Mbps or more -- and that the field trials so far indicate that downlink performance will exceed the 7 Mbps range. The field trials are also indicating a 30 millisecond delay on the network, which would make video gaming a possibility. McAdam said he expects to see a variety of LTE devices at CES 2011 -- not just LTE cards and dongles.

Looking ahead, McAdam said he expects that most consumers will ultimately have a number of devices that need connectivity -- four, five, six or perhaps as many as 20 devices. Consumers will want to buy "a bucket of megabytes" to be used any way they want by any of the devices. Voice becomes irrelevant because Verizon Wireless expects that by 2012 the voice that it sells on LTE will all be VoIP. So the game will not be about unlimited megabytes on a smartphone, but about tiers of service for all these devices.
