Innovance Networks Attracts $55 Million for its Core Optical Platform
Innovance Networks, a start-up based in Piscataway, New Jersey and Ottawa, Ontario, raised over $55 million in new funding to support its vision of a next generation, agile photonic network. Innovance is developing a core optical platform to replace today's static point-to-point WDM networks with an intelligent, dynamic architecture that delivers rapid, "touch-less" provisioning. Strategic investors include JDS Uniphase and Corning. Additional investors include Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV), Morgenthaler, Thomas Weisel Capital Partners, Azure Capital, Banc of America Securities, Kalkhoven, Pettit & Levin Ventures and Archery Capital.

- Innovance Networks raised US$95 million in December 2000.
- Innovance is headed by Peter Allen, who previously was the Vice-President of Business Development and General Manager of the Optoelectronics organization within Nortel Networks' Optical Networks division. Its technical team is led by Dr. Alan Solheim, who led development of
Nortel Networks' 10 Gbps line system and DWDM platform.
- iolon, a start-up based in San Jose, California, is supplying its widely tunable L-band external cavity laser to Innovance Networks. iolon's Apollo device is a miniature external cavity laser that tunes using micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) actuators, micro optical components, and advanced servo controls. The MEMS actuator rotates a mirror to retroreflect back into the laser cavity a particular frequency of light that is diffracted off a high-pitch grating. The device offers output power greater than 20mW and tuning over 100 channels at 50GHz spacing.
