CINGULAR MOVES TO EDGE/GSM
Cingular Wireless, the second largest wireless carrier in the US with 21.3 million mobile users, will begin upgrading its network to EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution).  The move to EDGE will begin with the installation of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) packet data and GSM over its existing TDMA and analog networks.  Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens were named as the primary suppliers of the new infrastructure equipment.  The companies are also developing GSM/TDMA dual-technology terminals.  http://www.cingular.com/cingular/about_us/news_releases/network_oct_30_01

ASTRAL POINT DEVELOPS SYSTEM FOR ROUTING AND DELIVERY OF WAVELENGTHS
Astral Point Communications introduced a modular passive optical system for its ON 7000 SONET node that will optimize transmission of DWDM wavelengths in metro and regional networks.  The module combines a series of multiplexer and filter components with patent-pending optical management bus and banded optics capabilities.  To minimize the insertion loss on channels expressing through the node, the system uses a banded DWDM architecture, where bundles of light are added and dropped from the network path. The bundles are then multiplexed or demultiplexed into useable wavelengths and delivered to or from the active node.  Each Astral Point OA 500 Modular Optical System module is expandable from 4 to 32 protected optical wavelengths today, with a 64 wavelength capacity currently in development.  http://www.astralpoint.com/web/pr103001.html

MARCONI INTRODUCES INNOVATIVE WIDEBAND TUNABLE LASER
Marconi Optical Components announced a Distributed Bragg Reflector (DS-DBR) InP laser that provides tunability across the full ITU C-band. Marconi said set up and control of the device is greatly simplified by reducing the tuning “map” of the device to effectively only two dimensions; a tuning current and a phase current.  This would enable real-time wavelength reconfiguration.  The output power and tuning uniformity of the device are also greatly improved.  Shipping volumes are expected by mid-2002.  http://www.marconi.com/html/solutions/opticalcomponents.htm
