STORM LAUNCHES GIGABIT ETHERNET SERVICE IN ITS EUROPEAN METRO RINGS
Storm Telecommunications announced Gigabit Ethernet services available through its metropolitan rings in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Frankfurt.  The corporate networking service is positioned as an alternative to Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks.  Separately, Storm appointed Bruno d'Avanzo as chairman of the company.  http://www.stormtel.com
Storm, September 18, 2001

  • Storm's mesh network is operational in the UK, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands and Belgium, and shortly will reach the USA and Austria.  In February 2000, Storm's management completed an MBO backed by investment affiliates of Soros Private Equity Partners, and further backing by investment affiliates of Merrill Lynch & Co came in May 2000.  In July 2001, Storm completed a $35 million round of funding, with investment from Soros Private Equity Partners, Merrill Lynch Ventures and others.
  • In June, Storm Telecommunications introduced its unmetered, “Lightning” optical access service over its new European backbone.  The service promises flexible, scalable access over an optical mesh of 16 routes linking London, Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm.  Pricing is based on flat-rate bandwidth increments, rather than distance or usage.
  • Storm Telecommunications has previously announced a long-term, US$100 million dark fiber lease with Telia, giving it access to substantial fiber across Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, and a US$13 million lease of fiber-optic infrastructure from Metromedia Fiber Network in key European cities.

WATERCOVE DEBUTS ITS MOBILE DATA NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
WaterCove Networks, a start-up based in Burlington, Massachusetts, introduced a mobile data architecture that integrates service intelligence and transport capabilities for enabling wireless operators to rapidly deploy mobile IP applications and services.  WaterCove said current-generation, transport-centric mobile data infrastructure built on traditional router and switch-based architectures are insufficient.  Its FlowCore distributed architecture, which will support 2.5G and 3G technologies such as CDMA, GPRS and UMTS, is designed to support five-times the number of subscribers than is possible with existing approaches.  Key elements of the WaterCove plan include an intelligent server that creates and manages subscriber profiles and network policies.  It would provide streamlined provisioning for subscriber data profiles by leveraging existing systems that contain this information, as well as open systems interfaces to third party and/or internally developed applications and services.  WaterCove will also provide a Mobile Data Support Node that performs switching, service delivery, subscriber aggregation and network resource management.  Deep processing power would be used to enforce policies and for real-time metering.  http://www.watercove.com
WaterCove Networks, September 18, 2001

  • Last October, WaterCove raised $10 million for its development of equipment for mobile wireless data networks.
  • WaterCove Networks is led by Peter Lojko, previously VP and General Manager of Excel Switching, developers of programmable voice switches.  Lucent acquired Excel Switching in August 1999 for $1.7 billion in stock.

BELGACOM SELECTS MPLS-ENABLED ALCATEL 7670 RSP FOR ATM NETWORK EXPANSION
Belgacom selected the Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platform (RSP) for a nationwide expansion of its ATM network.  Under the multi-million Euro contract, Belgacom will also deploy additional Alcatel 7470 Multiservice Platforms (MSP) to carry advanced IP services and aggregate DSL traffic.  In 2001, Belgacom increased its DSL-based Internet customer base to more than 100,000 by mid-July and expects to reach 200,000 customers by the end of year. http://www.alcatel.com/vpr/?body=/latestnews/18092001uk

BOEING AND IBM COMPLETE ASICS FOR SPACEWAY BROADBAND SATELLITES
Boeing Satellite Systems and IBM completed design work on nine custom ASICs for the next generation, "Spaceway" broadband satellites that will be operated by Hughes Network Systems (HNS).  The ASICs will execute key functions onboard the spacecraft, including signal demodulation/modulation, fast packet switching, antenna control and other payload support functions.  The companies said each satellite would function as an autonomous 10-Gbps fast packet switch, which can be likened to an Internet router in space.  The ASICs will also dynamically control the beam-forming function performed by the downlink antenna.  Hughes' Spaceway service will provide users with fast download speeds of up to 30 Mbps, and uplink rates ranging from 512 Kbps for individual users, to tens of Mbps for a business or major hub.  Spaceway will also provide full-mesh connectivity, allowing users to communicate on a single-hop, peer-to-peer basis, thereby reducing latency and enhancing collaborative interaction among work groups.  The ASICs range in size from 136,000 to more than eight million gates (circuits) each and will use IBM's 0.16-micron SA 27 copper ASIC technology.  Fabrication of the chips is underway.  The Spaceway service is expected to begin commercial operation in 2003.  http://www.hns.com
Boeing Satellite Systems, September 18, 2001

  • In March, Hughes and Boeing Satellite Systems selected the Sea Launch Company for the launch of two Spaceway satellites.  Spaceway's first Ka-band North American satellite is slated for launch at the end of 2002.  The satellites are Boeing 702 model spacecraft operating in the Ka-band.  Boeing has a 40% ownership interest in Sea Launch.

MARCONI DEMOS 10G TUNABLE TRANSMITTERS AND 40G INTEGRATED TRANSMITTERS
Marconi Optical Components (MOC) announced availability of the company's 10G tunable transmitters and 40G integrated transmitters.  Marconi's small footprint transmitter was developed by combining MOC's advanced GaAs optical chip technology with its high power, widely tunable lasers.  As a result, the product integrates the functionality of more than six conventional discrete components onto just two optical ICs.  The components will be demonstrated at the ECOC 2001 show in Amsterdam, 30 September - 3 October.

AGERE POWERS WIRELESS ACCESS POINTS USING ETHERNET CABLE
Agere Systems introduced a single-port ORiNOCO Active Ethernet power injector that enables its wireless access points to obtain power and data over a single standard Ethernet cable, rather than requiring two separate cables.  The Active Ethernet power injector provides DC power (48 volts) for Ethernet cable runs of up to 300-feet.  Active Ethernet works with all Agere wireless LAN access points, access servers, and outdoor routers.  An Automatic Load Sensing feature ensures that power is fed only to network equipment that can accept it. http://www.orinocowireless.com
