VENDORS SHOWCASE 10 GIGABIT ETHERNET PRODUCTS AT N+I
Eighteen vendors showed 10 Gigabit Ethernet products at this week’s NetWorld+Interop in Atlanta, including systems, test equipment, components and cabling.  The 10 Gigabit Ethernet Alliance featured a live demonstration using five of the seven port types in the IEEE 802.3ae (10 GbE) draft: 10GBASE-LR, 10GBASE-LW, 10GBASE-SR, 10GBASE-EW and 10GBASE-ER.  These port types include three of the four optical transceivers, or PMDs.  Several companies also showed chip-to-chip communication over the IEEE 802.3ae XAUI interface.  Participants in the showcase included Agilent, AMCC, Avaya, Broadcom, CDT, Cisco Systems, Extreme Networks, Foundry Networks, Intel, Ixia, Lucent Technologies, MindSpeed, Nortel Networks, PMC-Sierra, Picolight, Spirent Communications, Tyco Electronics and Velio Communications.

Nortel Networks, Spirent and AMCC showed a routing switch-to-routing switch implementation demonstrating OC-192 compatible, 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) WAN PHY interoperability.  The test showed the capability to generate and analyze 10GbE traffic over Nortel Networks’ Passport 8600 routing switch while operating with the AMCC chipset.  http://www.10gea.org/  http://www.nortelnetworks.com/corporate/news/newsreleases/2001c/09_11_01_10

SPIRENT EXPANDS ITS 10 GIGABIT ETHERNET TESTING PORTFOLIO
Spirent Communications is shipping five of the seven 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces specified by the IEEE draft standard 802.3ae task force.  Two new test modules were introduced at NetWorld+Interop and are shipping:

  • SmartBits’ LAN-3710AE, which is a 10GBASE-ER (extended range) Ethernet 1-port, 2 slot, single mode fiber, 1550 nanometer module that greatly expands the distance achieved today with standards-based Ethernet technology up to 40 kilometers.  List pricing is $100,000.
  • SmartBits’ LAN-3710AS, which is a lower-cost, 10GBASE-SR (short range) Ethernet 1-port, 2-slot, multimode fiber, 850 nanometer module that is suited for short distance applications up to 300 meters such as server farms, switch trunks and link aggregation. List pricing is $80,000.

Spirent's 10 GigE performance analysis product line also includes the SmartBits’ LAN-3710 AL, Adtech’s 10GBASE-LW and 10GBASE-EW test modules.  The company shipped its first 10 GigE product in April.  http://www.spirentcom.com/news/pressreleases/sc10gbeinterface.asp
