QWEST TO PROVIDE NETWORK SERVICES FOR GE’S HEALTH DATA
MANAGEMENT
GE Medical
Systems Information Technologies will use advanced network
resources from Qwest Communications to support an
Application Service Provider (ASP) venture that enables
hospitals across the US to electronically store their
rapidly growing inventory of medical images securely
off-site, and retrieve them at optical speeds. The
companies estimate that this ASP service will generate more
than $250 million in top-line revenue. GE is already
offering the ASP services to hospitals and healthcare
systems. Under the alliance, Qwest will transfer medical
data over its optical infrastructure and manage the
information in secure hosting centers. Qwest said modern
diagnostic imaging scanners are capable of producing up to
1,000 images per exam, making digital capture, review and
storage systems an absolute necessity.

BELL LABS CREATES ORGANIC SUPERCONDUCTOR OUT OF CARBON BUCKY
BALLS
Researchers at Bell Labs have shown that carbon molecules
known as bucky balls can act as superconductors at
temperatures below 117 Kelvin (minus 249 degrees
Fahrenheit). The achievement is more than double the
previous temperature record of 52 Kelvin (minus 366 degrees
Fahrenheit) set last year and it is warm enough for the
bucky ball superconductors to function while cooled by
liquid nitrogen instead of much more expensive liquid
helium. Lucent said the research raises hopes for
inexpensive, power loss-free organic electronics.

INTEL INTRODUCES GIGABIT ETHERNET SWITCHING CHIPS
Intel
introduced a 16-Port Gigabit chip designed for plug-and-play
Ethernet switches. Intel said its new Media Switch device
enables switch systems to be built for less than $100 per
port. Intel also introduced switching chips for
four-gigabit ports (two more than the previous generation of
Media Switch devices) and for 24-10/100 gigabit ports.

TELEGLOBE REORGANIZES, CUTS 20% OF STAFF, 15% OF CAPEX
Citing international market conditions, Teleglobe announced
a corporate restructuring that includes the elimination of
approximately 450 jobs, or 20% of its workforce. The
international carrier estimates that its CAPEX plan
extending through 2003 will be lowered approximately US$500
million from $3.4 billion to $2.9 billion. In April,
Teleglobe adjusted downward estimated requirements from $5
billion to $3.4 billion, largely reflecting cost
improvements available due to over capacity in fiber supply
as well as significant progress in the build out of its
global network, a reduction in Internet data center
requirements and other optimization and cost savings.

network currently has 55 major POPs.
RIVERSTONE AND TELLABS EXCHANGE LAWSUITS, END ALLIANCE
Riverstone
Networks and Tellabs filed lawsuits against each other, each
alleging breach of a strategic alliance under which Tellabs
was to resell Riverstone's next-generation router-based CMTS
(cable modem termination system) head-end product.
Tellabs
said the
Riverstone
products have never met contractual requirements for
handling voice traffic and that Riverstone missed multiple
product development milestones. Tellabs plans to offer its
own next-generation CABLESPAN solution through
interoperability with multiple brands of cable modem
termination systems (CMTS) and routers.
http://www.tellabs.com/news/01news/nr083001.shtml
Riverstone
said Tellabs failed to make minimum purchases of its DOCSIS
1.0 and Euro-DOCSIS certified CMTS equipment. Riverstone
said its CMTS products have been shipping for over a year
and that the products have been successfully deployed by
cable operators.
