MSN TO DISTRIBUTE CONTENT VIA EQUINIX INTERNET BUSINESS EXCHANGES
MSN will distribute content via Equinix IBX centers, which provide access to 57 different backbone networks, including UUNET/Worldcom, AT&T, Cable & Wireless and others.  In addition to colocation, MSN will utilize Equinix’s Exchange service for content peering.  The agreement initially covers Equinix's Silicon Valley IBX, with the option of future expansion to other Equinix locations.  http://www.equinix.com/press/2001/08-27-01-1.htm

GUANGDONG TELECOM TO DEPLOY ALCATEL 7670 ROUTING SWITCH
Guangdong Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom Group, selected Alcatel to supply a range of equipment for its provincial backbone and for its metro network expansion projects.  The deployment will include the Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platform (the company’s next generation multiprotocol platform for IP/ATM/MPLS) and the Alcatel 7470 Multiservice Platform (MSP).  Financial terms were not disclosed.  Alcatel has been the carrier's primary supplier of data network solutions since 1992.  http://www.alcatel.com/vpr/?body=/latestnews/27082001uk

  • The Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platform (RSP) is designed to scale from 50 Gbps to 450 Gbps in aggregate capacity while supporting interface speeds of OC-3c/STM-1 to OC-192c/STM-64.  The platform will feature dual control planes for IP/MPLS and ATM.  All components will be redundant, including control, fabric, power, cooling, management interfaces and line interfaces, and could be replaced or upgraded without service impact.  All mission-critical processes will also be 1+1 hot redundant, including PNNI routing and ATM call processing.

BELLSOUTH AWARDS 3 YEAR DSL EQUIPMENT CONTRACT TO ALCATEL
BellSouth awarded a three-year contract to Alcatel to supply a range of DSL equipment.  Financial terms were not disclosed.  By the end of 2001, BellSouth hopes to make DSL available in central offices serving 70% the households in the Southeastern US and grow its DSL subscriber base to 600,000.  http://www.alcatel.com

AT&T NAMES HOSSEIN ESLAMBOLCHI AS CTO AND PRESIDENT OF AT&T LABS
AT&T appointed Hossein Eslambolchi as chief technology officer and president of AT&T Labs.  Previously, Eslambolchi was senior vice president of packet and optical networks, responsible for the development, engineering, operations and reliability of AT&T's packet networks, as well as the company’s Global Network Operations Center.   Eslambolchi, who is an AT&T Fellow, holds 87 patents and was the program manager for the Fast Automated Restoration System (FASTAR), which makes it possible to quickly restore phone service when fiber cables are cut.  He succeeds David C. NETWORK ELEMENTS INTRODUCES 10 GBPS MINIPHY MODULE
Network Elements, a start-up based in Beaverton, Oregon, began sampling a 10 Gbps MiniPHY-300 optical networking module for use in DWDM, SONET, 10 Gbps Ethernet and optical switching applications.  The highly integrated design allows a reduction of up to 50% of the board space compared to alternative 300-pin subsystems.  It also provides extremely low power dissipation, allowing multiple 10 Gbps channels on a single-slot line card and thereby enabling higher density switching and transmission equipment.  The unit is priced at $5,000 per module in quantity.  http://www.networkelements.com/html/news/070901.html

  • In January, Network Elements secured $77 million in venture capital, bringing its total funding to $100 million.  The company offers a line of Optical Networking Modules (ONM) for 10 Gbps equipment, IP switch equipment, SONET/SDH and DWDM termination equipment.  Strategic investors include Intel Communications Fund and Nortel Networks.  Additional investors include Credit Suisse First Boston Private Equity, Western Technology Investment, New Enterprise Associates and Alloy Ventures.

Efficient Networks, a subsidiary of Siemens, announced availability of a four-port Next Generation Integrated Access Device (NG-IAD) for ADSL networks.  The unit offers four voice ports that support voice over DSL, as well as an integrated four-port Ethernet hub. TELCO SYSTEMS SUPPLIES VDSL FOR SF APARTMENT COMPLEX
Telco Systems is supplying a VDSL solution for an MTU/MDU installation in a 580-unit San Francisco Bay Area apartment complex.  The network integrator, RLA & Company, installed Telco Systems' EdgeLink V24S, 24-port switch in the Pacific Park Plaza building to provide residents with symmetrical VDSL for high-speed Internet access together with standard voice and the option to add video services.  Each residence that chooses this service will be provided with an EdgeLink VTU10 VDSL Termination Unit that plugs into a standard phone jack.  The service provides hardwired copper phone connections, plus 1.5 Mbps Internet service, an email account, a personal home page and FTP service.  http://www.batm.com  http://www.rla-company.com/

NAVINI RAISES $51 MILLION FOR ITS NON-LINE-OF-SIGHT BROADBAND WIRELESS PLATFORM

  • Navini is developing a “nomadic broadband access infrastucture portfolio” consisting of base stations, antenna systems, customer premise equipment and an element management system.  Navini will use adaptive phased-array antenna technology.   Its initial products operate in the 2.4 ISM band and the 2.6 MMDS band.  The product set promises easy end-user installation.
     
  • Navini Networks was founded in early 2000 by Wu-Fu- Chen and Dr. Guanghan Xu, a former professor at the University of Texas at Austin, School of Electrical Engineering.

SONUS NETWORKS ESTABLISHES JAPANESE SUBSIDIARY
Sonus Networks formed a Japanese subsidiary, Nihon Sonus Networks K.K., to be based in Tokyo.  The company already has alliances with Nissho Electronics Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation, under which they sell and support the full range of Sonus packet voice solutions to the Japanese carrier market.  Sonus named Takayuki Oshima to head its Japanese subsidiary.  Oshima previously was country manager for Japan for Lucent's Software Product Group.  http://www.sonusnet.com
