COGENT TO CARRY DELTATHREE’S VOIP SERVICES
Cogent Communications named deltathree as a preferred provider for VoIP services over its next generation optical IP network.  deltathree's V2 Phone service will include such features as inbound and outbound calling, online billing, caller ID, voicemail, speed dial, call blocking, and unified messaging.  Cogent remains focused on providing Internet connectivity.  It currently is offering service in 10 metro markets and plans to add an additional 10 markets before the end of 2001.  http://corp.deltathree.com/

  • Cogent Communications launched its metro Ethernet services in November, promising non-oversubscribed 100 Mbps Internet access capability at $1,000 per month.

EBONE LIGHTS 10 GBPS TRANSATLANTIC IP LINK
Ebone, a division of Global TeleSystems, extended its 10 Gbps IP backbone to the US using its own undersea fiber facilities.  The company has the equivalent of a trans-Atlantic fiber pair.  The 10 Gbps network connects London, Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt to two centers in New York.  http://www.ebone.com/

  • Last month, FLAG Atlantic-1, a multiterabit cable linking New York, London and Paris, entered into commercial service.  FA-1 is a six fiber pair, dual cable network offering 4.8 Tbps of total raw capacity (2 x 2.4 Tbps).  The final splice of the network’s southern cable is currently underway and will be complete by Q3.
  • In December, GTS sold its 50% stake in FLAG Atlantic Limited to its joint venture partner, FLAG Telecom.   GTS retained ownership of a fiber pair on the entire FA-1 system.  The fiber pair will have a fully redundant design capacity of 400 Gbps, with an initial lit capacity of 80 Gbps (8 x 10 Gbps).

EXCITE@HOME REACHES 3,674,000 BROADBAND SUBSCRIBERS
As of June 30, Excite@Home was serving 3,674,000 broadband subscribers worldwide, representing an addition of 474,000 subscribers for Q2.  North American subscribers totaled 3,271,000 at June 30, 2001, an increase of 101% from a year ago.  Service penetration in North America was 9.3% in the second quarter, up from 6.1% a year ago.  Internationally, Excite@Home's growth continues to be led by @Home Japan, which provides services to four cable operators in Japan serving approximately seven million cable homes.  http://www.home.com

ENVARA DEVELOPS DUAL MODE, 802.11A AND B WIRELESS CHIPSET
Envara, a start-up with offices in Kfar Saba, Israel and Palo Alto, California, introduced a dual mode wireless chipset operating in the 5GHz band (802.11a) and offering compatibility with 2.4GHz, (Wi-Fi, 802.11b) compliant wireless LAN devices.  The Envara design is a 2 chip solution that includes an integrated baseband chip with built-in MAC and dual IEEE 802.11a+b modem functionality, and an RF chip with a dual band 2.4 and 5GHz implementation.  Sampling is expected in Q4.  The company envisions a need for dual-mode products to provide users with the flexibility to access the many 2.4GHz wireless LANs currently being deployed and the next wave of 5GHz networks supporting higher data rates, larger capacity and less interference.  http://www.envara.com/single.asp?ReleasesID=39

ONEX OUTLINES MULTISERVICE SILICON PLANS
ONEX, a start-up based in Bedford, Massachusetts, announced its plans for integrating optical transmission, switching, routing, and control software into a two-chip silicon solution.  The ONEX solution aims to provide “service agility” at the silicon level, enabling multiservice platforms that combine the functionality of IP routing, ATM switching and digital cross-connects.  The silicon solution will consist of two devices: a universal service processor and a universal switch processor.  The service processor would enable universal SONET/SDH line cards for TDM, ATM or packet services.  The switch processor would provide a common fabric for native TDM, ATM and packet switching as well as control plane processing.  Product specifics will be announced at a later date.  Sampling is expected later this year.  ONEX partners include IBM for fabrication, Tensilica for its integrated RISC libraries and Wind River for its embedded real time OS.  http://www.onexco.com/

BROADVIEW NETWORKS SELECTS COPPERCOM’S VOICE OVER BROADBAND GATEWAY
Broadview Networks, a network-based CLEC serving the Northeastern US, selected CopperCom's voice over broadband (VoB) technology for integrated voice and data services over its DSL network.  The CopperCom Gateway is being used with Polycom's NetEngine 6300 integrated access device.  The service could support as many as 16 voice lines over the DSL connection.  http://www.coppercom.com

  • Earlier this month, CopperCom secured $65 million in a new round of venture funding led by Advent International and Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV).  In addition, the company relocated its headquarters to Boca Raton, Florida.
  • Also this month, CopperCom announced GR-303 support for its CSX 2100 media gateway and CopperController softswitch, enabling service providers to reach subscribers through broadband or circuit access and connect them either to the PSTN or a packet core network.
  • Last month, CopperCom announced plans to add VoIP support to its Local Exchange Softswitch System (LeXSS), which delivers converged services over TDM, ATM and IP networks.

BOCA PHOTONICS TARGETS OPTICAL MESH NETWORK PROVISIONING AND PROTECTION
Boca Photonics, a start-up based in Boca Raton, Florida, began previewing a service control solution for optical mesh network provisioning and protection.  The company’s service control software leverages a real-time signaling control protocol for the provisioning, protection and restoration of high-capacity optical services.  The system is currently being demonstrated in a simulated mesh network encompassing nine optical cross connects.  Boca Photonics anticipates rolling out a commercial implementation of the solution early next year. http://www.bocaphotonics.com

  • Boca Photonics was founded by Michael B. McLaughlin, previously Vice President and General Manager of the Optical Networks Division for Siemens, Dr. Jose H. Sabat, formerly Director of Network Planning (USA) and Director of Sales and Marketing (Brazil) for Nortel Networks, Xiangbo Feng, previously Senior Scientist at Hitachi Telcom, and Thomas E.   • Metro-Optix's CityStream bandwidth manager integrates ATM, IP, and SONET traffic in a single system.  The Metro-Optix platform's core switching fabric is designed to scale from 100 Gbps to 400 Gbps.  Applications could include ring aggregation, point-of-presence bandwidth management, service access multiplexing, DSLAM aggregation, ATM edge switching, and IP routing.
  • Metro-Optix is led by Arun Bellary, who previously served as General Manager of Ericsson's broadband access products unit.  The company is based in Santa Clara, CA, and Allen, TX.

TREBIA SECURES $30 MILLION FOR ITS STORAGE NETWORK PROCESSOR
Trebia Networks, a start-up based in Acton, Massachusetts, secured $30 million in second round funding for development of its storage network processor.  The company is working on a new category of network processor targeting both NAS (Network Attached Storage) and SAN (Storage Area Networks) segments.  Specific product plans have not yet been disclosed.  Investors include Atlas Venture, Kodiak Venture Partners, Raza Foundries, BancBoston Ventures, VantagePoint Venture Partners, Allianz of America Inc., Deutsche Banc Alex Brown and others.
