TELEGLOBE ACCELERATES EUROPEAN BUILD-OUT, PURCHASING WAVELENGTHS RATHER THAN DARK FIBER
Teleglobe will purchase multiple wavelengths from KPNQwest for $56 million in a bid to accelerate the rollout of its European network.  The purchase of lit capacity is also expected to save Teleglobe an estimated $75 million over the cost of lighting dark fiber or building its own facilities.  Included in the agreement are wavelength purchases on KPNQwest's German, Scandinavian, East European and Swiss routes connecting 24 major European cities.  In addition, KPNQwest has purchased approximately US$40 million in equipment and network services from Teleglobe for its European operations.  http://www.teleglobe.com
Teleglobe, July 18, 2001

  • In May 2000, Teleglobe announced an agreement to purchase 13,000 route km of dark fiber from KPNQwest for US$100 million.
  • In June, Teleglobe announced up to US$350 million in purchases of lit fiber across North America, primarily from Williams Communications and Broadwing.  Early last year, Teleglobe had agreed to purchase nationwide dark fiber from Williams.  The new wavelength purchases will provide Teleglobe with a multiple 10 Gbps transcontinental backbone that will be interconnected with acquired capacity on the Flag Atlantic cable system.  Teleglobe is also deploying an MPLS data network to support IP VPN services.  As part of the transactions, Williams and Broadwing will separately purchase a combined US $110 million of Teleglobe's network and eBusiness services over the next four years.

ACCEL PARTNERS AND LEVERAGED BUYOUT FIRM TARGET TELECOM OPPORTUNITIES
Accel Partners, one of the leading Silicon Valley venture capital firms, formed a new company in partnership with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), a leveraged buyout company, targeting telecom industry buyouts.  The new Accel-KKR Telecom will invest in and manage assets in the telecommunications business on a global basis using the joint human and financial resources of the two firms. Funding for specific investments will come from KKR's existing Funds, Accel's latest Funds, and from the Fund managed by the existing Accel-KKR partnership.  Arun Sarin, former president of AirTouch and chief executive officer of InfoSpace, will serve as the company’s CEO.  The companies said there is a sizable gap between the telecom opportunity and the difficulties many industry players are currently experiencing.  http://www.accel.com  http://www.kkr.com
