IEEE
BEGINS STANDARDS PROCESS FOR ETHERNET-IN THE FIRST MILE
The
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
initiated the standards process for
Ethernet-in-the-first-Mile (EFM).
Specifically, a 802.3ah EFM Task Force is studying
technical proposals for three subscriber access network
topologies and physical layers: point-to-point copper over
the existing copper plant at speeds of at least 10 Mbps up
to at least 750 m; point-to-point optical fiber over a
single fiber at a speed of 1000 Mbps up to at least 10 km;
and point-to-multipoint fiber at a speed of 1000 Mbps up
to at least 10 km. The
project will also define operations, administration, and
maintenance (OAM) for EFM, which includes remote failure
indication, remote loopback, and link monitoring.
Over 80 companies are already collaborating on this
effort. The
IEEE-Standards Association Standards Board is officially
expected to approve the EFM project at their meeting in
September. http://www.ieee802.org/3/efm/public/index.html

WINDOWS
XP TO SUPPORT UNIVERSAL PLUG AND PLAY (UPNP) INTERNET
GATEWAYS
Microsoft’s
forthcoming Windows XP will include support for Universal
Plug and Play (UPnP) Internet gateways, enabling multiple
PCs and devices to share a single public IP address on a
small network. UPnP,
which will also be supported by vendors of Internet
gateway routers, provides a communication framework to
allow PCs, intelligent devices and appliances on a network
to automatically identify and work with one another.
UPnP also enables individual applications to
automatically navigate this gateway. http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2001/Jul01/07-17GatewayDevicesPR.asp
