VITESSE EXPANDS SONET/SDH SILICON PORTFOLIO
Vitesse introduced three new SONET/SDH Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) Integrated Circuits (ICs) developed using 0.18mm CMOS technology.  Two of the chips are extended multi-rate SerDes devices with integrated Multiplexer, Demultiplexer, Clock Recovery Unit (CRU) and Clock Multiplier Unit (CMU) functions supporting OC-48, OC-12, OC-3 with or without Forward Error Correction (FEC), Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, 2x Fibre Channel, along with other various data rates. The third new chip supports OC-48 (with or without FEC).  Applications for the devices could include 2.5 Gbps serial or 10 Gbps parallel optical transponder modules, metro DWDM systems, SONET/SDH systems or optical test equipment. The three new chips expand upon the Vitesse’s current line of 2.5 Gbps transceivers by offering increased functionality and performance yet lower power dissipation.  http://www.vitesse.com

OPTICAL SOLUTIONS ANNOUNCES SWITCHED DIGITAL VIDEO OVER FIBER-TO-THE-HOME
Optical Solutions, a start-up based in Minneapolis, will integrate components from Myrio, Harmonic, Hitachi, Pace and Motorola to provide an end-to-end switched digital video service over its recently introduced FiberPath 400 passive optical networking system.  The goal is to allow multiple end-users to receive real-time broadcast video content and interactive guides/menus via IP transport.  The companies collaborating on the switched digital video technology include Myrio, with its customer software, middleware and back office software platforms; Harmonic, with its MPEG2 video over IP head-end; Hitachi, with its Hitachi GR2000 gigabit router; and Pace, with its DSL4000 Digital Home Gateway. Motorola also will be featured with its Streamaster multimedia set-top system.  Optical Solution’s FiberPath 400 system is being developed to deliver Internet access up to 100Mbps, streaming IP video, 80 analog CATV channels, digital CATV and multi-line telephony service.  http://www.opticalsolutions.com

ADVA ADDS MEMS OPTICAL SWITCHING MODULE TO ITS METRO DWDM PLATFORM
ADVA Optical Networking introduced a MEMs-based all-optical switching (OXC) module for its FSP 3000 metro DWDM system.  The new module is capable of switching 4 bi-directional channels on both 1550nm and single mode 1310nm interfaces. Each module is the same size as the existing line cards in ADVA's FSP 3000.  Applications for the wavelength switching module could include optical add/drop multiplexing, ring coupling, protection and dynamic traffic provisioning.  The OSX module fully integrates with ADVA’s existing graphical management suite.  http://www.advaoptical.com
ADVA, July 13, 2001

  • The ADVA Fiber Service Platform 3000 (FSP 3000) provides up to 32 protected or 64 unprotected channels in logical-hub, add-drop, and managed-ring and logical-mesh topologies.  In Unidirectional Path Switched Ring (UPSR) topologies, the platform supports up to 10 nodes within 100 km of the central office.

PIRELLI DEVELOPS 1,728-FIBER CABLE FOR METRO NETWORKS
Pirelli introduced several new high fiber count cables, including a 1,728-fiber Ribbon-In-Loose-Tube (RILT) MassLink cable; a Premises Ribbon Distribution cable with 288 fibers; and CurbLink Plus cable, a composite cable for remote powering and Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) applications.  The 1,728-fiber cable represents Pirelli’s latest advancement in high density cabling.  In 1995 Pirelli was the first to offer a 432-fiber design. It introduced 720- and 864-fiber designs in 1998, and its 1,152-fiber MassLink cable made its debut last year. http://www.pirelli.com/cables
