NTT, SHARP AND DNP TO DEVELOP APPLICATIONS FOR FTTH NETWORKS
NTT formed a joint research partnership with Sharp and Dai Nippon Printing Company (DNP) targeting high-bandwidth content and services designed for future 100-Mbps class optical connections to the home.  The "HIKARI Market Creation" effort aims to stimulate demand for high bandwidth services by matching state-of-the-art networks, terminals and content.  Sharp is developing a 28-inch, large-screen super-high definition LCD (SHD) display capable of showing photographic-quality images of 5.25 million (2560x2048) pixels with 16.7 million colors.  DNP has produced over 500 HDTV programs.  The HIKARI project is also testing an in-home network based on IEEE 1394a-2000 optical connections.  "HIKARI " is a Japanese word meaning "optical."  http://www.ntt.co.jp/news/news01e/0107/010704.html

MARCONI CUTS ITS FINANCIAL FORECAST, YEARLY REVENUES EXPECTED TO FALL 15%
Marconi requested a halt in trading of its shares in London on July 4 in order to give the market an urgent update of its financial guidance.  Citing a weakening market for telecommunications products, particularly in Europe, Marconi now expects sales for its fiscal year ending 31 March 2002 to be around 15% lower than the previous year and operating profit before exceptional items to be down by approximately 50%.  Marconi has already reduced its global workforce by 4,000 people since cost-cutting measures were announced in April.  The company plans a reduction of an additional 4,000 jobs.  Marconi will withdraw from a number of its existing facilities and concentrate its activities on a number of major sites.  Marconi said it remains confident in the medium-term outlook and expects to see some signs of recovery in the first half of 2002.  http://www.marconi.com/html/news/tradingstatementandrequestforresumptionoftradinginshares.htm
