WILLIAMS
COMMUNICATIONS CEO REFUTES BANDWIDTH GLUT
During
a keynote speech at The Goldman Sachs Emerging Telco and
Internet Infrastructure Conference, Howard Janzen,
Chairman and CEO of Williams Communications, said it is
“simply not accurate to add up dark fiber in the
ground and then say there is too much capacity.”
Janzen argues that the vast amounts of unlit
fiber represent a reserve for the inevitable future
growth in demand. Tapping
into this capacity requires a great deal of time and
capital to light the dark fiber.
Janzen also predicts the market will see
continued “vaporization of weaker players.”

FLAG
Telecom, June 20, 2001
- In April, Verizon and
FLAG Telecom agreed to collaborate on a pan-European
network. Under
the alliance, certain European dark fiber and
collocation facilities owned by FLAG Telecom will be
purchased by Verizon.
Verizon will own, operate and manage the
city-to-city backbone network, while FLAG Telecom
will provide and manage its own IP layer and
collocation space for its customers.
- In
February, Verizon announced plans to build and
operate a global voice and data network linking the
US with major cities in Europe, Asia and Latin
America. To
deploy the network, Verizon will acquire and manage
fiber-optic cable, switching and transmission
equipment, transmission facilities, and related
network management software.
Verizon said that routing international calls
over its new network rather than via other carriers
could save the company more than $300 million in
transport costs over five years.
Verizon notes that 40 percent of all
international long-distance traffic in the United
States originates in its service territory.

EXODUS
SEES DROP IN MANAGED HOSTING SALES
Exodus
Communications, which provides managed hosting services
for enterprises, expects its Q2 revenue to be
approximately $315 million, compared to Q1 revenues of
$348.7 million. The
revenue shortfall is due to a decrease in the rate of
new customer installations, an increase in the rate of
cancellations, reductions of orders from existing
customers, and an increase in reserves related to dot
com failures. http://www.exodus.net/
Exodus, June 20, 2001
- In a conference call,
Exodus said its capital expenditures for Q2 would
fall to $280 million from $510 million in Q1,
reflecting the completion of construction of its
Internet Data Centers.
