METRO ETHERNET FORUM ANNOUNCES MARKETING CHARTER
A group of 37 companies including leading service providers, major incumbent local exchange carriers and top network equipment vendors have formed a new Metro Ethernet Forum to accelerate the adoption of optical Ethernet technology in metro networks around the globe.  The group’s objectives are to maximize the deployment of Ethernet-based metro networks by promoting standards and interoperability.  The Metro Ethernet Forum plans to leverage existing standards and technologies as much as possible and facilitate the development of new standards, service definitions and operational agreements necessary to bring multi-vendor optical Ethernet into metro networks.  http://www.metroethernetforum.org/

  • Storm Telecommunications has previously announced a long-term, US$100 million dark fiber lease with Telia, giving it access to substantial fiber across Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, and a US$13 million lease of fiber-optic infrastructure from Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN) in key European cities.
  • Sycamore Networks supplies optical switching and transmission equipment to Storm under an agreement now valued at up to US$100 million.  Sycamore also provides lease financing to Storm.

LOOKING GLASS NETWORKS SELECTS NETCRACKER’S OSS FOR ITS NEW METRO NETS
Looking Glass Networks, which is building fiber-dense networks in key US cities, selected NetCracker Technology to provide inventory and provisioning systems as part of its operational support systems (OSS).  Looking Glass will use NetCracker’s web-based solution to track, manage, and maintain its end-to-end physical and logical inventory and to automate service provisioning.  NetCracker will be a core component in Looking Glass' "flow through" provisioning strategy.  NetCracker is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.  http://www.netcracker.com/news/061201.html
NetCracker, June 12, 2001

  • Looking Glass Networks is building dense networks of 216 to 864 fiber cross-sections per cable in major US cities.  The network is designed to deliver SONET, Gigabit Ethernet and wavelength services in addition to dark fiber.  Looking Glass is led by Lynn E. Refer, who formerly served as Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Engineering at MCI WorldCom.  Refer previously was Senior Vice President of Development for MFS Communications.  http://www.lglass.net/
  • In February, Looking Glass Networks raised an additional $275 million in debt capital to fund its metro optical network build-out plan, bringing its total funding to $475 million.  In March, Looking Glass executed interconnection agreements with all targeted incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) in its Phase I markets.
