ONI SYSTEMS LAUNCHES NEW OPTICAL EDGE SERVICE PLATFORM
ONI Systems introduced a new optical edge service platform for extending high bandwidth services from bandwidth rich core metro networks directly to end-users.  The new ONLINE2500, which incorporates technology acquired from Finisar, combines multi-wavelength transport with managed wavelength services and multi-service grooming in a compact, modular, 2-rack unit (2RU) chassis.  For managed wavelength services, it provides rate and protocol-tunable interfaces with digital wrapper technology. These interfaces can be throttled to service rates between 100 Mbps and 2.5 Gbps and provide comprehensive performance monitoring capability.  The product uses coarse WDM technology to support up to 8 protected or 16 unprotected wavelengths per ring.  Another unique feature enables full bandwidth SAN service delivery at distances up to 6,000 km by incorporating buffer credits that compensate for protocol signaling delay.  Like ONI's existing portfolio, the ONLINE2500 provides internal management channels to simplify and streamline service monitoring and provisioning by eliminating the need for a separate overlay management network.  http://www.oni.com

KAGOOR DEVELOPS VOIP TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLATFORM, SIGNS ITXC
Kagoor Networks, a start-up based in San Mateo, California, introduced its VoIP-aware traffic processing technology platform to address quality issues relating to call completion rates, call duration, call disconnects, route availability and quality, bandwidth availability, and other parameters affecting toll quality VoIP infrastructure.  The Kagoor Voice Flow Operating System classifies, measures and manipulates packets of voice traffic at wire speed across the IP media and signaling layers.  It differs from MPLS-enabled routers in that it is “voice aware” and can be implemented in non-MPLS networks, including the public Internet, to improve latency and other issues in VoIP routing.  Kagoor’s platform could also be deployed in an MPLS network as a complementary network element adding VoIP specific capabilities.  Two initial applications are VoIP traffic engineering and call aggregation.  ITXC has agreed to become the company’s first customer and another six carriers are currently testing the system.  http://www.kagoor.com/news__press_releases.html

  • Kagoor’s major investors include ComVentures, Vantage Point Venture Partners, TDF Ventures (Singapore) and Intel, as well as industry luminaries Ed Kozel, former CTO at Cisco Systems and Raj Singh, founder of Cerent and Siara.
  • Cisco Systems acquired Class Data Systems, a developer of policy-based QoS systems, for $50 million in stock and cash in May 1998.

SALIRA TARGETS GIGABIT ETHERNET PONS, NAMES MANAGEMENT TEAM
Salira Optical Network Systems, a start-up based in San Jose, California, announced its plans to extend passive optical networking technology to Gigabit Ethernet speeds.  The company said its IP/Ethernet optical system would add intelligence at both the customer and service provider ends, while reducing equipment costs to less than $500 per user.  The system would leverage a distributed network processor architecture and offer software to deliver value-added services on a per-port basis, enabling personalization of bandwidth and services to individual customers.  The company’s expected timeline was not disclosed.  http://www.salira.com
