LEVEL
3 WINS CONTRACTS WITH SIX CARRIERS
Level 3 announced six contracts in Asia and
North America. In Asia, China Unicom (China’s second
largest telecommunications carrier), Accelia, GlobalNet
Telecommunications International, and Produce on Demand
will use Level 3’s CrossRoads Internet access service,
which provides global connectivity at port speeds up to
1 Gbps. In the United States, France Telecom awarded
Level 3 a contract to obtain a 2.5-gigabit per second
circuit between New York and California using Level 3’s
(3)Link Private Line service. The new circuit
quadruples France Telecom’s transport capacity while it
works to complete construction on its North American
backbone network. The (3)Link Private Line service
provides dedicated amounts of bandwidth connecting two
fixed locations while bypassing the public switched
telephone network.

- In December, China
Unicom announced plans for a VoIP network spanning
more than 319 cities across 30 provinces. China
Unicom selected Cisco Systems to supply IP core
backbone and aggregation routers and switches as well
as voice applications for the packet-based network.
The companies describe the project as the world's
largest VoIP network.
- In September, France
Telecom selected Alcatel to design, build, install and
maintain its DWDM backbone network across North
America. Nortel Networks was selected to supply its
10 Gbps SONET transmission platforms. Level 3
Communications will provide 15,000 route miles of
long-haul dark fiber. The installation will cover 28
points of presence and 270 intermediary sites across
the continent. Commercial services over the backbone
will be offered under the Global One organization.
France Telecom plans to invest about US$ 200 million
in the project, approximately half of which will go to
Level 3.

PROXIM WIRELESS LAN PRODUCTS TO SUPPORT BOTH
802.11b
AND 802.11a STANDARDS
Proxim will incorporate both
the 11 Mbps 802.11b wireless LAN standard and the
802.11a standard, which offers data rates of up to 54
Mbps, into its Harmony wireless LAN product family of
access points and PC cards. Dual standard support will
allow enterprises to deploy 802.11b wireless networking
solutions today, and migrate to 802.11a as products
become available. Proxim says that the 802.11a standard
enables more simultaneous wireless users and new mobile
multimedia applications such as streaming video, while
experiencing fewer interference problems than 802.11b.
