COMPLETES TELOCITY ACQUISITION, COMBINING DSL, DIRECPC AND
DIRECTV ASSETS
Hughes completed its $179
million cash acquisition of Telocity, which operates a
DSL network active in 150 US metropolitan areas.
Hughes plans to integrate the broadband delivery
capabilities of the Telocity service with DIRECTV, the leading
provider of digital multichannel entertainment in the US with
more than 9.5 million customers.
Hughes Network Systems also operates DirecPC, a
satellite-based Internet and broadband service.
Hughes already offers a combined DIRECTV/DirecPC service.

- At
the end of Q4, Telocity had 47,911 subscribers, up from
23,494 at the end of Q3.
- A record 1 million new
customers bought DIRECTV systems in the US during Q4.
- Hughes recently added a
satellite uplink capability to its DirecPC satellite
Internet access service.
The new DirecPC Satellite Return system provides
uplink speed of up to 128 kbps and a downlink speed of up to
400 kbps. The
system requires a new DirecDuo antenna, which provides
broadband Internet access as well as access to more than 225
channels of DIRECTV programming.

SELLS US $475 MILLION IN CAPACITY ON ITS UNDERSEA CABLES
During Q1, 360networks completed sales totaling more than US
$475 million to major carriers and network service providers for
services on 360atlantic, 360americas, 360asia and 360pacific as

Many of the new sales were from repeat customers.
More than 25% of the new 360atlantic cable capacity has

LAUNCHES HIGHEST DENSITY VOICE OVER PACKET (VOP) CHIP
Centillium Communications introduced its next generation
Entropia Voice over Packet (VoP) chip supporting VoIP and VoATM
and offering the ability to process 336 channels of either Pulse
Code Modulation (PCM) or Adaptive Differential PCM (ADPCM)
traffic. The
Entropia system-on-a-chip includes a Digital Signal Processor
(DSP) and software for voice processing, including compression,
echo cancellation, tone detection and generation, and signaling
support. The network processor, which is also integrated on the
chip, includes AAL1, AAL2, and RTP/UDP/IP processing.

AT&T
LATIN AMERICA SELECTS NORTEL’S LONG-HAUL AND METRO OPTICAL
AT&T Latin
America will deploy Nortel Networks’ OPTera Metro and OPTera
Long Haul optical solutions.
The contract also covers Nortel Networks’ Preside
network management and Nortel Networks’ Global Professional

- Last week, AT&T Latin
America announced $300 million in secured, long-term
equipment financing from its key vendors, including Cisco
Systems, Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks.
As part of the deal, AT&T Latin America will
commit to make equipment purchases from these vendors in
proportion to their respective financing commitments.
- As of year-end 2000, AT&T
Latin America's high-speed fiber network reached over 5,200
total route kilometers or approximately 131,000 fiber
kilometers, covering 12 major metropolitan areas.
WAYPORT
EXPANDS ITS 802.11B WIRELESS ACCESS SERVICE IN US AIRPORTS
Wayport is now offering 802.11b wireless Internet access at
San Jose International Airport (terminal-wide coverage),
Seattle-Tacoma International, Austin-Bergstrom International and
Dallas/Fort Worth International airports.
Wayport's wireless service simply requires a laptop and
an 802.11b wireless Ethernet card.
The service is also available at some hotels in the Four
Seasons, Wyndham, Sierra Suites and Sonesta Hotels and Resorts

SECURES $25.5 MILLION FOR BLUETOOTH SILICON
Zeevo,
a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, closed its
third round of funding with $25.5 Million in equity financing.
The company has raised $42 million to date.
Zeevo is developing a Bluetooth system-on-chip solution
using 0.18-micron CMOS technology.
Investors include Dell Ventures, Capital Research and
Management Company, Charter Growth Capital, Sequoia Capital and

NOKIA
SIGNS 3G DEALS WITH ORANGE,
MOBILCOM, HUTCHISON 3G, C&W OPTUS
Orange, one of the
world’s largest mobile operators, selected Nokia as the major
supplier of its advanced 3G networks for Itineris in France and
Orange in the UK. MobilCom,
which is partially owned by Orange, also selected Nokia as a
supplier for its 3G network in Germany.
These contacts are valued at 1.5 billion euros (US$1.34
billion).
Separately, Nokia agreed to
provide a bridge-financing package valued at GBP 460 million
(US$659 million) to Hutchison 3G UK Ltd. for rollout of its 3G
nationwide network in the UK. Hutchison 3G will provide WCDMA
coverage using Nokia's highly flexible Optima Compact and
Supreme range of base stations.
Hutchison 3G’s shareholders include Hutchison Whampoa
Limited (65%), NTT DoCoMo (20%), and KPN Mobile (15%).

Cable & Wireless Optus also
selected Nokia for the sole supply of a comprehensive 3G mobile
network in Australia. The agreement covers the supply of 3G RAN
(Radio Access Network), for both WCDMA and EDGE, as well as the

SIGNS UMTS/3G MOBILE CONTRACT WITH ORANGE FRANCE (ITINERIS)
France Telecom
Mobile, the French subsidiary of Orange S.A., awarded a contract
valued at 315 million euro (US$282 million) to Alcatel for the
supply of a 3rd generation mobile communication network (3G/UMTS)
for France. Alcatel’s
Evolium radio equipment will be installed mainly on the already
existing sites of Itineris's network, allowing coverage for half
of Northern France, including Paris and its outskirts.
Deployment begins this year.
Alcatel will also supply its Evolium solution for the
3G-core network, which will be able to manage up to one million

CISCO
ANNOUNCES IP+OPTICAL
DESIGNATION
Cisco
Systems announced a new IP+Optical
designation within the Cisco Powered Network program for key
service provider customers.
Cogent Communications, a next generation ISP, is the
first to receive the designation for having built a nationwide IP+Optical
end-to-end network with Cisco equipment.
Cogent's national backbone is currently operational via
two large interconnected Eastern and Western rings which connect
13 cities across the US. The
ISP is offering 100Mbps of optical bandwidth and Internet
connectivity for a flat monthly rate of $1,000.
