BROADWING
LIGHTS EASTERN RING OF ALL-OPTICAL NETWORK
Broadwing completed
the eastern optical ring of its all-optical US network and expects
to activate the central and western rings within the next 45 days.
Broadwing's eastern ring features optical switches in Fort
Worth, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Joplin, Missouri and covers 4000
route miles between New York and Fort Worth.
Broadwing recently announced the installation of its first
all-optical switch from Corvis and the first field trial of an
optical signal traveling over 4000km without electrical
regeneration. On-ramps
to Broadwing's optical network are provided via Nortel's Optera LH
and CIENA's CoreDirector Optical Switching Systems.
Broadwing said overall completion of its all-optical
network will eradicate constraints of bandwidth availability and
provisioning problems that have prevented customers from realizing
the true potential of multimedia and rich content in their
business applications. http://www.broadwing.com

QUAKE
TECHNOLOGIES SAMPLES ITS FIRST 10 GBPS OPTICAL COMPONENTS
Quake Technologies,
a fabless semiconductor start up, began sampling two physical
(PHY) layer chips for optical networking applications.
The first device is a 10 Gbps serializer/deserializer (SerDes)
transceiver for delivering Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF)
compliant, 9.953 to 10.3 Gbps speeds for Ethernet and SONET.
The second chip is an integrated transimpedance-limiting
amplifier designed for 10 Gbps SONET/SDH or 10 Gbps Ethernet
applications. http://www.quaketech.com

ERICSSON
DEVELOPS BLUETOOTH KIOSKS FOR MOBILE INTERNET ACCESS
Ericsson
introduced a new
mobile communications concept, the Bluetooth Local Infotainment
Point (BLIP) -- a
stand-alone local platform that enables users to gain access to
information through their mobile phone, PDA or other mobile

SBC
COMMUNICATIONS UPDATES 2001 OUTLOOK
SBC Communications said
its key growth platforms are performing well and that 2001
revenue growth will be driven by solid core wireline operations,
continued strong data growth, contributions from its Cingular
mobile venture with BellSouth, and expansion of the company's
long-distance business. However,
the company noted increased expenses beginning in the second
quarter of 2000 due to its acquisition of Sterling Commerce and
DSL, national expansion, long distance, Cingular wireless and
Ameritech network upgrades. SBC
now expects first-quarter 2001 earnings per share in the $0.50 to
$0.53 range, which is below the average analyst estimate of $0.59.
SBC expects earnings per share in the second, third and
fourth quarters of 2001 to be above the $0.60 level.
The company expects to improve its expense rate through
improved DSL economics, Ameritech merger synergies and service
improvements, network efficiencies, and a more measured national
expansion effort. SBC
expects capital expenditures for 2001 to be comparable with 2000
levels. http://www.sbc.com
