SBC REACHES 767,000 DSL CUSTOMERS, DATA REVENUES GROW 44%
As of December 31, SBC Communications was serving 767,000 DSL customers, up from 516,000 at the end of Q3.  Total data services revenue exceeded $2.2 billion during Q4, up 44% over the same period last year.  SBC noted a 68% increase in SONET revenues, due primarily to large corporate customers' growing use of bandwidth-hungry applications.  The company reported a 49% growth in switched data transport services, including ATM, Frame Relay and DSL.  Data revenues now represent 21.5% of SBC's wireline revenues, compared with 16% in Q4 99. DEUTSCHE TELEKOM REACHES 628,000 DSL CUSTOMERS, ISDN GROWTH CONTINUES
As of December 31, Deutsche Telekom reached approximately 628,000 T-DSL lines, exceeding the company’s target goal of 500,000 customers.  ISDN channels grew 30% over 1999, reaching a total of 17.3 million.  Meanwhile, Deutsche Telekom's T-Online Internet service closed the year at 7.9 million subscribers, a gain of 3.2 million new subscribers over December 1999.  http://www.telekom.de/dtag/presse/artikel/0,1018,x1064,00.html

GLOBAL CROSSING COMPLETES PAN AMERICAN CROSSING LINK
Global Crossing completed a critical link of its network linking the U.S. and Mexico to Central America and the Caribbean. The 10,000 km segment, known as Pan American Crossing, is a two-fiber-pair system providing 20 Gbps in initial capacity.  The new cable shares a landing point in Grover Beach, California, with the forthcoming Pacific Crossing cable system.  It will also connect to Global Crossing's South American Crossing (SAC) network via a landing station in Fort Amador, Panama; and will connect to Global Crossing's Mid-Atlantic Crossing (MAC) cable in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.  http://www.globalcrossing.com/pressreleases/pr_012501.htm

FIBERNET PROVIDES YIPES WITH ACCESS TO CLASS A OFFICE BUILDINGS

NLIGHT PHOTONICS RAISES $44 MILLION FOR ITS OPTICAL PUMP MODULES
nLight Photonics, a start-up based in Seattle, raised $44 million in its second round of financing.  The company is developing high-performance pump modules to enable new optical amplifiers that will reduce system costs and increase data speeds to 40Gbps.  Investors include Menlo Ventures, Oak Investment Partners, Mohr, Davidow Ventures, Adams Capital Management, Cedar Grove Investments, and a number of individuals.  http://www.nlightphotonics.com

MATSUSHITA INTRODUCES 1394 CHIP FOR DIGITAL AV COMPONENTS AND PC PERIPHERALS
Matsushita introduced an IEEE1394 interface chip that provides network connectivity for both digital AV components and PC peripherals.  Two high-speed physical layer ports each offer IEEE1394a-compliant maximum throughput of 400 Mbps.  The chip further features dual, bi-directional protocol processors and content protection circuits based on DTCP (Digital Transmission Content Protection) that enable high-speed, high-quality independent data streams of different data types to flow in both directions simultaneously.  http://www.matsushita.co.jp/corp/news/official.data/data.dir/en010117-1/en010117-1.html
