BROADBAND CONTENT DELIVERY FORUM COMPLETES INITIAL SPECIFICATION DOCUMENTS
The Broadband Content Delivery Forum (BCD Forum), an alliance of carriers and network equipment vendors, completed the development of end-to-end requirements for the delivery of broadband content.  The document, which is being prepared as an informational Request for Comment (RFC) for review by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), outlines four phases of broadband content delivery: finding an asset; preparing the network for delivery; delivering content; and clean-up. Additional documents address quality of service requirements, personal content tunnels and meta-data definitions for broadband content delivery.   http://www.bcdforum.org
BCD, January 22, 2001

  • The Broadband Content Delivery Forum (BCD Forum) aims to create a content delivery reference architecture based on Personal Content Tunnels, bringing revenue-generating content to the subscriber’s desktop and content mediation to the POP, and establish cross-branding and co-marketing between ESP/ISP and content developers.  The BCD currently has 108 member companies.
  • A separate Content Bridge Alliance was formed in October to address Internet interoperability issues related to the distribution, delivery and management of content across multi-vendor networks.  The Content Bridge Alliance will propose a new model for cross-network delivery in which changes in content are seamlessly passed between operators and usage information for that content is returned to the content provider.   http://www.content-bridge.com

UPC SELECTS CISCO FOR VOIP OVER ITS EUROPEAN CABLE NETWORKS
United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) selected Cisco Systems and KPMG Consulting to implement voice over IP (VoIP) over its European cable networks.  The three-year agreement initially covers five cities and up to 500,000 residential customers.  Financial terms were not disclosed.   http://www.upccorp.com/upccorp/default.htm?2#2
UPC, January 22, 2001

  • In December, UPC cancelled plans to merge its cable modem service with that of Excite@Home.
  • As of the end of Q3, UPC's chello unit reported 264,000 cable modem users on its European networks, up 21% from 219,000 in Q2.   Its cable networks passed approximately 9.7 million homes, of which 6.4 million subscribed to basic cable TV service.

BROADCOM DELIVERS SINGLE-CHIP IP PHONE SOLUTION
Broadcom introduced a single-chip solution for enabling Ethernet IP telephones.  The chip integrates a RISC processor core for protocol handling, a DSP core for signal processing, an Ethernet switch and two Ethernet transceivers, enabling it to receive, prioritize, process, and play or forward packets of voice and data over existing corporate 10/100 Base-T networks.  The device also integrates wideband-capable analog CODECs. Voice prioritization is accomplished via IEEE 802.1p QoS implemented in the integrated Ethernet switch.  http://www.broadcom.com

CISCO SHIPS NEW INTEGRATED ACCESS DEVICES
Cisco Systems introduced Integrated Access Devices (IADs) for use in three different network architecture scenarios: TDM-based access to central office switches, packet-based access to central office switches and packet-based access to soft switch architectures. The Cisco IAD2420 Series offers a choice of 8 analog ports ($2,695), 16 analog ports ($4,795) or one T1 digital port ($6,795) for voice connectivity. The units are available with either T1 or DSL WAN interface with voice over ATM Adaption Layer 2 (VoAAL2) and VoIP implementations.
