CISCO
AND CIENA TEST 10 GBPS VERY
SHORT REACH OPTICS
Cisco Systems
and CIENA completed interoperability tests of 10 Gbps
(OC-192/STM-64) Very Short Reach (VSR) optics between Cisco 12000
Series Internet Routers and CIENA's MultiWave CoreDirector DWDM
switching system. The
VSR design uses a 12-element array of 850-nanometer lasers, each
operating at 1.25 Gbps. The companies said the VSR links could be
used to scale Internet POPs at 40% below current OC-192 costs.
They also expect VSR parallel optic interconnect technology
to scale for more affordable intra-office interconnections at 40
Gbps and 80 Gbps. http://www.ciena.com/news/archive/2000/12/12.08.2000.html

GATESPACE
INTRODUCES SOFTWARE PLATFORM FOR OSGI SERVICES
Gatespace,
a spin-off from Ericsson, introduced a distributed software
platform for creating, delivering and managing network services
based on the Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGi).
OSGi aims to specify an open standard for connecting smart
consumer devices with Internet services.
Applications for Service Gateways could include IP
telephony, secured entertainment on-demand, secured e-commerce and
banking, automated energy management, remote meter reading, home
appliance diagnostics and security monitoring.
Gatespace’s distributed service platform acts as a thin
server managing the interface between the home network and the
service provider. The
software consists of a set of OSGi components for management and
remote control of service gateways.
Gatespace was instrumental in developing the technical
specifications for OSGi. The company is based in Göteborg, Sweden
and has a branch office in Menlo Park, California.
