YAHOO!
TO ESTABLISH INTERNET EXCHANGES IN EQUINIX CENTERS
Yahoo! will establish "Yahoo! Internet Exchange" (YIX)
points in Equinix's neutral Internet Business Exchange centers.
By locating in the Equinix centers, Yahoo! will be able to
choose from a variety of ISPs, carriers and other service
providers participating in Equinix's open marketplaces for
Internet infrastructure services.
It will also enable Yahoo! Broadcast to eliminate
intermediate backbone transit by peering with ISPs through
Equinix's Gigabit Ethernet central switching fabric.
Yahoo! Broadcast estimates it will be able to reach as much
as 85% of the Internet community directly through partners under
the same roof. The
new Equinix Exchange service will be available initially in the
Washington, D.C. and Silicon Valley IBX centers, followed by other
Equinix centers in 2001. http://www.equinix.com

than 15 million hours of audio and video programming in
September 2000.
- For September, Yahoo! reported
that cumulative registrations for member services grew to a
record 185 million, up from 155 million in June.
Overall Yahoo! traffic increased to 780 million page
views per day on average during September, compared to an
average of 680 million page views per day in June 2000.
- Equinix's list of customers also
includes AT&T, Cable & Wireless, Charles Schwab, EYT
(formerly Ernst & Young Technologies), Excite@Home, IBM,
InterNAP, Loudcloud, NorthPoint Communications, Ogilvy &
Mather, StorageNetworks and WorldCom.
BROADWING
DEPLOYS CIENA'S OPTICAL CORE SWITCH
Broadwing will
deploy Ciena's MultiWave CoreDirector optical switches on its
nationwide fiber network to deliver next-generation communications
services supported by automated, real-time optical provisioning,
restoration, protection and switching.
Broadwing said it chose an intelligent
optical mesh rather a SONET design in order to simplify its
network architecture, lower costs and support customized service
offerings. The
CoreDirector platform provides high-capacity optical switching,
dynamic network protection and restoration, and real-time service
provisioning. Broadwing
expects to be the first network provider to deploy CoreDirector's
mesh capabilities. The initial
CoreDirector systems are being deployed in Fort Worth, Atlanta,
New York and Washington, D.C.
Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ciena,
December 7, 2000
- Ciena's
CoreDirector switch initially supports 256 OC-48/STM-16 or 64
OC-192/STM-64 interfaces in a single bay with the ability to
scale to multi-bay configurations.
The platform provides OC-3/STM-1, OC-12/STM-4,
OC-48/STM-16 and OC-192/STM-64 transmission, including
wavelength switching, and is designed to support
OC-768/STM-256 in the future. The optical interfaces may be
software-configured for full wavelength switching or
channelized STS-n granularity, down to STS-1.
- Broadwing
uses the Corvis all-optical platform for long-haul
transmission of optical signals without electrical
regeneration.
- In
July, Broadwing launched 10 Gbps optical wavelength
services as a standard offering to its customers.
Other telecom companies could use the service to link
their routers via 10 Gbps wavelengths over Broadwing's
18,500-mile fiber network.
CIELO
DEMONSTRATES 1.3 MICRON VCSEL-BASED OC-48 OPTICAL TRANSMITTER
Cielo Communications demonstrated a 1.3 micron
Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) OC-48 Short-Reach
(SR) optical transmitter transmitting error-free data over 20 km
of single mode fiber. Cielo
and Sandia National Laboratories developed the SONET-compliant
device, which was built using commercially available integrated
circuits and proprietary optical packaging.
Cielo Communications said benefits of its technology
include faster modulation speeds, easier testing capability,
smaller size, lower power consumption and lower device cost.

Cielo Communications, December 7, 2000
- In June, Cielo and Sandia
National Laboratories jointly announced a 1.3 micron VCSEL,
fabricated on Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) substrates.
VENDORS
TEST INTEROPERABLE VOICE OVER BROADBAND SERVICES
Members of the OpenVoB initiative completed a
multi-vendor interoperability test of ATM Forum AAL2 Loop
Emulation Service. The
Voice over Broadband initiative is aimed at enabling
interoperability between broadband gateways and integrated access
devices from multiple vendors.
The recent testing was held Nov. 27-30, 2000 at the
University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory in Durham,
N.H. The next test is
scheduled for March 2001.
