ASTRAL POINT ANNOUNCES OPTICAL ACCESS NODE FOR METRO SERVICES
Astral Point Communications, a start-up based in Chelmsford, Mass., introduced a compact optical access node designed for metropolitan optical services such as DSLAM backhaul, low cost Ethernet, T1 and T3 packet services and next generation dynamic wavelength services.   Astral Point’s ON 2000 Optical Access Node combines the functionality of a distributed digital cross-connect, an Ethernet switch and an optical ADM into a single multi-service platform.  The units will be priced starting at $15,000 per node, allowing service providers to move closer to the customer premises.  They could be provisioned as an all-optical platform to support up to 160 Gbps of DWDM lightwave capacity through a variety of SONET/SDH modules, including OC3/STM-1, OC12/STM-4, OC48/STM-16, OC192/STM-64, 10/100 BaseT Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel.  Astral Point’s network-wide distributed 3:1:0 digital cross-connect (DCS) capability enables the units to provision leased line services from DS1 and DS3 to OC48 and low-cost mapping of DS0 and DS1 traffic at the network edge. General availability is expected in Q2.  http://www.astralpoint.com

  • Astral Point also introduced its Galaxy Distributed Control Plane software, a system that automatically integrates every Astral Point node as a single virtual network element that leverages a distributed switching architecture.  The software uses OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) routing protocol and MPLS ready signaling to perform auto-discovery and One Touch Provisioning functions.  It also provides a unique protection scheme supporting non-fiber back-up paths and full-time utilization of all bandwidth resources.
  • Astral Point has previously disclosed contracts with Time Warner Telecom and Advanced Telcom Group.
  • In July, Astral Point raised $80 million in third round financing.  Investors include KMC Investment Partners, E-TEK Dynamics, GE Capital, Bowman Capital, Essex Investment, The Sprout Group, New Enterprise Associates and OneLiberty Ventures.
  • Astral Point was founded by Raj Shanmugaraj (formerly PictureTel), Bill Mitchell (Cascade Communications), Bruce Miller (Bay Networks) and Steve Sherry.
