ALCATEL
INTRODUCES CORE IP PLATFORM, EDGE SERVICES ROUTER
Alcatel
delivered its next generation, terabit-class IP routing platform
to France Telecom R&D for testing as part of the European
Commission project ATRIUM. The
Alcatel 7770 Routing Core Platform (RCP) will feature a 640 Gbps
switching fabric with an ability to scale to 5 Tbps and 10 Tbps
through in-service upgrades.
It will use IBM's PowerNP network processor and customized
ASICs for distributed IP forwarding and wire-speed packet
handling. Intelligence
capabilities will include MPLS-guided traffic engineering,
multi-layer restoration and dynamic bandwidth allocation and IP
trunking. The design
will support multi-port POS interfaces at up to OC-192, as well as
future OC-768, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and very short range (VSR)
optical interfaces.
Alcatel also introduced an edge
services router for delivering
dedicated and differentiated business IP services.
The Alcatel 7420 Edge Services Router will use distributed
network processors to implement policy-based IP services at wire
speeds up to OC-48. Field
trials are expected in Q1. http://www.newbridge.com/

MCLEODUSA
OUTLINES MOVE TO MESH-SWITCH ARCHITECTURE
McLeodUSA, a national facilities-based
telecommunications provider, outlined its plans for a "mesh
switch" network architecture encompassing 50 POPs across the
US and stretching across 31,000 route miles of fiber.
Key architectural components of the network will include
ultra-broadband mesh switches, DWDM systems and aggregation
multiplexers that would enable fast provisioning times and
competitive price structures.
The company hopes that a mesh-switch fiber architecture
will be less complex and more efficient than the conventional
network ring topology deployed by other carriers.
McLeod USA plans to make its final vendor selections by
year-end 2000. http://www.mcleodusa.com/aboutmcleodusa/pressroom/singlestory.php3?pid=94
McLeodUSA, November 8, 2000
- Last month, McLeodUSA signed a
three year, $600 million contract to purchase wholesale voice
and data services from Qwest.
McLeodUSA also announced plans to acquire CapRock
Communications Corp., a CLEC serving the southwestern
US with 95,000 lines in service and 5,400 fiber route
miles.
- In
January, McLeodUSA acquired Splitrock Services Inc., which
operated a nationwide data network with ATM switches in over
325 POPs in all 50 states.
- In
May, McLeodUSA secured a bank credit facility of $1.3 billion
to expand its network and fund its business plan.
AT&T
OFFERS PRIVATE LABEL LAYER 2 TUNNELING PROTOCOL (L2TP) DIAL
SERVICES
AT&T expanded its private label IP ISP services with
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) capabilities.
The new capabilities allow ISPs and ASPs to offer their
customers value-added VPNs and multi-protocol remote access via
AT&T's L2TP-enabled dial infrastructure.

3COM
AND COPPER MOUNTAIN TARGET 3Com
and Copper Mountain Networks introduced a carrier solution for
secure Virtual Private Networks over DSL (VPNoDSL).
The VPN tunnel-switching combines 3Com's Total Control 1000
multi-service access platform with the aggregation capabilities of
Copper Mountain's CopperEdge 200 DSL Concentrator.
Copper Mountain's DSL concentrator dynamically recognizes
user profiles and services at the IP layer, aggregates all VPN
traffic from multiple subscribers in a geographic region onto a
single virtual circuit and forwards the traffic to the 3Com Total
Control 1000 platform. The 3Com platform applies its various
security and tunneling services to the VPN traffic (e.g., IPSec,
L2TP, authentication, accounting, and billing) and forwards it to
an ATM switch or IP router. http://www.coppermountain.com/news/11082000pr.html

LUCENT
LAUNCHES ENVIRONMENTALLY-HARDENED DSLAMS
Lucent Technologies introduced two new models of its
Stinger™ digital subscriber line (DSL) Access Concentrator
designed to withstand harsh climates and weather conditions.
The new Stinger RT models are smaller, environmentally
hardened DSL concentrators that could be deployed alone, or in
conjunction with a digital loop carrier (DLC) into existing street
cabinets. Lucent also
announced SHDSL capabilities for its Stinger family.
