VELIO DEBUTS SILICON DESIGNS FOR OPTICAL CORES, TARGETS TERABIT-ON-A-CHIP SWITCHING
Velio Communications, a start-up based in San Jose, California, unveiled a silicon architecture for core switching platforms designed to scale to thousands of OC-48 and OC-192 ports and hundreds of OC-768 (40 Gbps) ports.  Velio’s designs are targeted at high performance switch/router backplanes capable of supporting multi-terabits of capacity.  The company also expects to be early to market with a terabit of switching capacity on a single silicon device.  Velio’s silicon architecture will integrate low-power serial input/output ports directly onto the switch fabric to maximize densities and reduce overall device count.  The company will use a standard CMOS processes along with extremely low power circuit design mechanisms to address internal switching functions, thereby allowing hundreds of gigabits to be switched with just a few watts of power.  Products will include Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) backplane transceivers (Dec 2000), SONET/SDH grooming switches (Q1 2001), and a cross-point space switch for optical core platforms and lambda routers (Q2 2001).  http://www.velio.com

  • Velio is led by Raju Chekuri, formerly a group director at Cadence.  Its technical team is headed by Dr. William Dally, currently a professor at Stanford University, where he leads projects on high-speed signaling, computer architecture and network architecture, and Dr. John Poulton of University of North Carolina.  The company was previously known as Chip2Chip.  Velio has raised more than $50 million in venture funding from Sequoia Capital, IVP, Global Catalyst Partners, Capital Research Group and HarbourVest Partners.

NEC & HIMEJI RAISE LUMINESCENT EFFICIENCY OF OPTICAL DEVICES BY 40%
NEC Corporation and the Himeji Institute of Technology (Hyogo Prefecture, Japan) announced a high-resolution microbeam X-ray diffraction method capable of defining optical devices with approximately 100 times greater accuracy than in the past and with approximately 40% greater luminescent efficiency.  The companies said their achievement could lead to significant improvements in optical elements used for WDM systems.

THURAYA-1 SATELLITE ENTERS ORBIT, DUAL-MODE GSM/SATELLITE COVERAGE + GPS
Thuraya-1, a geosynchronous mobile satellite serving the Middle East, North and Central Africa, Europe, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, was successfully carried into orbit on board a Sea Launch Zenit-3SL rocket launched from the equator in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The satellite will use on-board digital signal processing to route calls directly from one handheld unit to another or through a terrestrial GSM network.  The handheld phones will function as regular GSM phones while in range of a land-based mobile network, but will be able to automatically switch to Thuraya satellite mode in areas that are outside the terrestrial system.  The phones also incorporate Global Positioning System (GPS) accurate to 100m and SMS (Short Message Service) text paging.  The devices are similar in appearance, size and weight to ordinary mobile phones.  Thuraya’s satellite footprint over approximately 99 countries gives the satellite a potential coverage of nearly 1.8 billion people.  The on-board processor constantly changes the beam configuration to match fluctuating usage patterns.  Thuraya has the capacity for 13,750 simultaneous calls and an expected in-orbit life of 12 years. The satellite is owned by Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. of the United Arab Emirates. http://www.thuraya.com
