EXTREME NETWORKS REPORTS TWO METRO NETWORKS OPERATIONAL AT 10 GBPS
Extreme Networks named two customers with
operational 10 Gigabit Ethernet metro networks built without SONET:  IntelliSpace and Yipes.  IntelliSpace is building commercial in-building networks offering bandwidth services scaling from 64K from 10 Gbps.  IntelliSpace is partnering with Metromedia Fiber Network and Global Crossing on wide area connectivity.  Yipes is building metropolitan area networks supporting native Ethernet service scaling from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps (in 1 Mbps increments).  http://www.extremenetworks.com/corporate/pressroom/news/pr10_18_00b.asp

  • In September, the IEEE P802.3ae (10 Gigabit Ethernet) Task Force completed the first draft of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet specification. Final ratification for the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard is expected in early 2002.  http://www.10gea.org.

INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION ADVANCES SPEC FOR 10 GBPS FIBRE CHANNEL
The Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) completed the core content of its proposed 10 Gbps Fibre Channel standard.  The forthcoming 10GFC spec leverages the work done by the IEEE P802.3ae Task Force and shares a common link architecture and common components with Ethernet and InfiniBand.  The proposed 10GFC standard will span link distances from 15m up to 10km and offer direct support for native dark fiber (DWDM) and SONET/SDH, while preserving the Fibre Channel frame format and size for full backwards compatibility. The core content's roadmap addresses speed and feeds, protocol, fabric services, management, security and technology. In addition, the content draft provides information for various interfaces, including disk drive physical interface, removable small form factor connector and transceivers.  The association expects a final standard to ready in early 2002.  http://www.fibrechannel.org

NORTEL NETWORKS, HP COOPERATE ON 10 GBPS ETHERNET SERVER NICS, DATA CENTER SOLUTIONS
Nortel Networks and Hewlett-Packard agreed to jointly develop solutions for next generation Optical Internet data centers, including a 10 Gbps Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) for connecting high-performance servers to optical networks.  Other elements within the Nortel/HP new data center model are expected to include optically enabled storage and content networks, as well as centralized service management. The companies would provide interworking between HP OpenView and Nortel Networks' Preside Managed Applications Services platform.  A definitive partnership agreement between the companies is still being finalized.  http://www.nortelnetworks.com/corporate/news/newsreleases/2000c/10_18_0000211_oidc.html

Nova Crystals, October 18, 2000

  • In August, Nova Crystals demonstrated an electrically pumped, 1.3-micron vertical cavity surface emitting laser diode (VCSEL) capable of delivering 2.5 Gbps bandwidth.  The transmission capabilities of the device are rated at 40 km without the need for repeaters and amplifiers.  Nova Crystals said its technology lends itself to low-cost, high-volume manufacturing, making it suitable for longer-reach Gigabit Ethernet /Fiber-Channel modules for LAN/WAN systems, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks, low-cost WDM systems and other SONET/SDH applications.
  • Nova Crystals was founded in September 1998 by former Cornell University researchers Dr. Yu-Hwa Lo and Dr. Felix Ejeckam.  Last October, Nova Crystals, in cooperation with Cornell and Sandia National Labs, demonstrated a means to create GaAs vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) on a silicon substrate.  Nova Crystals is based in San Jose, California.
