YAHOO! INTRODUCES FREE VOICE SERVICES
Yahoo! will use Net2Phone's Voice over IP network for a suite of free voice services, including telephone access to popular Yahoo! content and e-mail; free voicemail via a 10-digit mailbox number; and free PC-to-phone calling via Yahoo! Messenger.  Text-to-speech technology for the services is provided by SpeechWorks.

  • Microsoft already integrates Net2Phone's PC-based client software into its MSN Messenger Service 3.0, a free Internet messaging client.  The service includes a new "Call" button that allows users to place PC-to-PC or PC-to-phone calls to any of their online buddies.  

  • In August, AT&T invested $1.4 billion in Net2Phone, acquiring a 39% voting stake and a 32% economic stake.

YAHOO! REPORTS 185 MILLION USERS, TRAFFIC UP 15% OVER JUNE
Yahoo! reported cumulative registrations for member services grew to a record 185 million, up from 155 million in June.  Overall Yahoo! traffic increased to 780 million page views per day on average during September, compared to an average of 680 million page views per day in June 2000. Yahoo! Japan's traffic, which is included in these page view totals, increased to more than 112 million page views per day during September from more than 85 million per day in June 2000.  Yahoo! Europe's traffic, also included in total page views, reached 41 million page views per day on average in September.

  • Yahoo!'s communication platform delivered 6.1 billion messages on Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Messenger and eGroups in September, up from 4.4 billion in June.

  • Voice minutes spent by individuals on Yahoo!'s Chat services doubled to one billion total minutes during September, up from 500 million in June.

  • Separately, Yahoo! appointed Edward R. Kozel to its Board of Directors.  Kozel is currently a managing partner of Open Range Ventures and a member of the Board of Directors of Cisco Systems, where he worked for 11 years in a variety of roles, including chief technology officer and senior vice president of business development.  While at Cisco, Kozel was responsible for more than 22 technology acquisitions and 25 minority investments.

OPTICAL INTERNETWORKING FORUM COMPLETES FIRST 10GBPS SPECIFICATIONS
The Optical Internetworking Forum approved three optical networking specifications, including the first for interfaces within routers operating in 10 Gbps applications.  The approved documents include:

  • a recommended interface based on the SATURN Development Group's "POS-PHY 3" specification for the interconnection of OC-48 Physical Layer (PHY) devices to Link Layer devices.

  • a high-speed packet interface specification for the interconnection of Physical Layer (PHY) devices and Link Layer devices supporting packet and cell transfer over OC-192 SONET/SDH, as well as 10 Gbps Ethernet applications.

  • a recommended electrical interface specification for the transfer of data between STS-192/STM-64 framers and a Serializer/Deserializer device.

The specifications were developed by the OIF's Physical and Link Layer Working Group.

GTS, COMPAQ AND MICROSOFT LAUNCH EUROPEAN STREAMING MEDIA SERVICE

METROMEDIA FIBER TO ACQUIRE SITESMITH FOR OUTSOURCED WEB DESIGN SERVICES
Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN) agreed to acquire SiteSmith, a provider of Internet infrastructure management services, for $1.36 billion in stock (Oct 9 prices). SiteSmith provides corporate customers with outsourced Web design, hardware and software installation, co-location and management services. CACHEFLOW TO ACQUIRE ENTERA FOR ITS STREAMING CONTENT DISTRIBUTION

ONEPATH NETWORKS SECURES $40 MILLION FOR ITS FTTH ARCHITECTURE
OnePath Networks, a start-up based in Princeton, New Jersey, secured $40 million in its latest round of financing.  The company is developing optical access solutions for delivering high-speed data (10 Mbps) as well as CATV and DBS entertainment video into a home.  Investors include Aurum-SBC Investments, Patricof & Co. BROADBAND USERS IN SINGAPORE REACH 250K

LUCENT TO MISS REVENUE TARGETS AGAIN
Lucent Technologies expects earnings for its fourth fiscal quarter of 2000 to be lower than expectations and in the range of $0.17 to $0.18 cents per share. The company expects revenues from continuing operations in the range of $9.3 billion to $9.4 billion for the quarter, a 14 percent to 15 percent increase over last year.  Lucent attributed the shortfall to lower than expected revenues and gross margins in its optical systems business; credit concerns and bad debt in the emerging service provider market; and greater than anticipated decline in circuit switching sales and margins (now at 39% to 40%).
