SBC SELECTS LUCENT'S 7R/E PACKET TELEPHONY FOR NATIONAL EXPANSION
SBC Communications selected Lucent Technologies as its primary provider of data, voice and access infrastructure technology for its national network expansion.  The five-year contract, which is expected to be valued at more than $1 billion, covers SBC's nationwide entry into 30 markets outside its traditional service areas.  SBC will be deploying a combination of Lucent's 7R/E Packet Solutions, AnyMedia Access Systems, GX 550 and CBX 500 Multiservice ATM switches, and operations and network management systems.  SBC plans to enter nine new markets this year and 21 next year, providing local, long-distance, Internet and high-speed data services to businesses and consumers.  Expansion efforts are already underway in Baltimore, Boston, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, New York, Seattle, and Washington, DC.

  • Earlier this week, Cable & Wireless selected Nortel Networks for a global migration from circuit-switched voice to VoIP.  The $1.4 billion contract covers deployment and operation of Nortel's Succession Communication Server 2000, Succession Communication Server 3000 softswitch and Nortel Networks Passport 15000 Packet Voice Gateway.
  • Last month, Global Crossing announced plans to converge all of its voice traffic over packet infrastructure by the end of 2002.  Its network includes Sonus Networks' GSX9000 Open Services Switch, the PSX6000 SoftSwitch and the SGX2000 SS7 Signaling Gateway.

ONI SYSTEMS INTRODUCES A LONGER REACH OPTICAL TRANSPORT SYSTEM
ONI Systems introduced a new regional optical transport platform designed to transmit signals up to 640 km between source and destination without electrical regeneration.  The new ONLINE11000 chassis could be deployed in rings ranging from a few hundred kilometers to more than 1,000 km. The new platform shares the line cards, client interfaces and management system as ONI System's existing metro core and metro access solutions.  It features full optical add/drop capabilities, line-based optical or path-based rerouting of channels in the event of optical fiber failure, and support for 33 protected and 66 unprotected wavelengths.  Client interfaces include OC3, OC12, OC48, (OC192 expected Q4 2000), Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel and ESCON.  http://www.oni.com/

NET2PHONE'S MINUTES OF USE GROWS TO 167 MILLION, UP 38% OVER Q2
Net2Phone's minutes of use grew to 167 million during Q3, up 38% over the preceding quarter and 117% over the same period last year.  Since forming its key alliance with Microsoft in late July, Net2Phone has routed more than 100 million minutes.  The company reported quarterly revenue of $24.9 million and a net loss of $27.8 million, or ($0.29) per share, prior to one-time charges for the acquisition of Aplio.

  • Microsoft integrates Net2Phone's PC-based client software into its MSN Messenger Service 3.0, a free Internet messaging client.  The service includes a new "Call" button that allows users to place PC-to-PC or PC-to-phone calls to any of their online buddies.  
  • In July, Net2Phone acquired Aplio, a developer of a standalone Internet telephony telephone that reroutes calls over the Internet without a PC. The Aplio/Phone uses its own processor and modem, Flash RAM, hardware-based full-duplex voice compression, embedded Linux and a proprietary Internet connection process to mediate between calling parties.  Aplio was based in Paris, France.

BROADWING INTRODUCES PHONE-TO-PHONE VOIP SERVICE
Broadwing Communications launched phone-to-phone VoIP service in partnership with Zeroplus.com, an Internet telephony provider. To place a call, the service requires users to enter a PIN number after dialing a toll-free access number.  http://www.broadwing.com

CORNING INNOVATION VENTURES FORMS $50 MILLION VENTURE
Corning announced a new venture fund targeted at optical start-ups.  Corning Innovation Ventures initially holds $50 million.  The company recently participated in the funding of CyOptics, a developer of optoelectronic components for 40Gbps and ultra-long-haul transmission.  http://www.corning.com/innovationventures

  • In June, WaveSplitter named Bill Diamond as its new President and CEO.  Diamond most recently was vice president of marketing at E-TEK Dynamics and was a major contributor to the company's successful IPO.  Prior to E-TEK, Diamond directed the worldwide marketing activities for Lucent Technologies' Optoelectronics business unit.

PEREGRINE SEMI ATTRACTS $21 MILLION INVESTMENT FOR 10 GBPS CMOS DEVICES
Peregrine Semiconductor raised $21 million in new venture funding to support its development of new 10 Gbps physical layer devices, as well as 6 GHz RF integrated circuits, based on its silicon-on-insulator processing technology.  Peregrine's Ultra-Thin-Silicon (UTSi) CMOS process technology is currently being used in radio frequency IC products for CDMA digital cellular, Bluetooth and LMDS/MMDS broadband wireless access.  Investors include Morgenthaler Ventures, Patricof & Co., Apax Partners, Wasserstein Adelsen Ventures, Roser Ventures, CSK Ventures of Tokyo, Japan. http://www.peregrine-semi.com

FRANCE TELECOM'S WANADOO REPORTS 1.5 MILLION CUSTOMERS, 61K BROADBAND USERS
As of September, France Telecom's Wanadoo Internet service had 1.5 million subscribers in France.  The company was providing Internet service to 61,000 cable modem and ADSL customers, up from 43,180 in June 2000.  The company attributed the growth to ADSL.  Wanadoo is currently hosting 35,000 Web sites.  It also has 505,000 active customers outside of France, chiefly in Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Morocco.  Wanadoo is targeting the 10-million customer mark in Europe by 2003, with 30% of the total on cable modem and ADSL.  http://www.francetelecom.com/vanglais/actualite/frames/res_wana.htm

JTEC APPOINTS FORMER NORTEL NETWORKS EXECUTIVES AS NEW CEO
Jtec Pty Limited, a subsidiary of Techniche, appointed Brian Davis as executive chairman and chief executive officer.  Davis formerly served as chief executive of Nortel Networks for Australia and New Zealand.  He replaces Keith Murray, who has been acting CEO for the last 5 months and John Riedl who is now chief executive officer of Jtec's recently established subsidiary Jtec China.  Jtec specializes in the design and implementation of carrier grade access and intelligent switching solutions for service providers and carriers worldwide.
