CABLELABS
ADVANCES ITS WORK ON KEY OPENCABLE SOFTWARE SPECS
CableLabs
outlined plans for a
forthcoming OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP)
specification, which
aims to provide a national interactive television delivery
mechanism for enhanced
video services to cable customers.
The specification will have two major components: an
Execution Engine (EE), which will provide a programmable
environment, and a Presentation Engine (PE), similar to a Web
browser, which will provide support for creating and using the
Web's standardized markup and scripting languages. Sun
Microsystems, which will be the lead contributor on the EE, has
licensed its Java TV technology to CableLabs for use in the
specification. Liberate
and Microsoft have been selected as lead contributors on the PE.
CableLabs expects the bulk of the specification work can be
completed before the end of the year.
