COLT
TELECOM TO IMPLEMENT USAGE-BASED IP BILLING
COLT
Telecom plc licensed XACCT Technologies' usage based IP billing
platform for deployment throughout its network.
COLT plans full implementation before the end of 2000 in
nine European countries as well as at its peering point in New
York. The companies
said that the system would interface with COLT's customer and
interconnect billing systems as well as its management control and
Business Support System (BSS) platforms.

XACCT, August 15, 2000
- COLT currently operates in 20
European cities in 9 countries and plans to be in 27 cities by
the end of 2000. As
of March 31, COLT had installed 2,075 route km of fiber in its
city-networks. In
May, COLT named Cisco Systems as its preferred IP equipment
supplier for its European networks.
- Last week, XACCT announced that
Genuity would deploy its system to create usage-based pricing
models for IP services over its Cisco backbone.
- Broadwing
Communications is also adopting XACCT’s system to collect
the customer IP usage data from multiple network elements,
such as routers, switches, firewalls, and application servers.
The data will be used for pricing its new virtual
private network (VPN) service.
- XACCT’s
multi-source, multi-layer architecture enables it to extract
information from multiple network devices and from all layers
of the network - from physical layer to the application layer,
in real time. The
data is then synthesized or eXtensible Detail Records, similar
to the Call Detail Records (CDRs) generated by telco switches.
NORTEL
NETWORKS TO ACQUIRE SONOMA SYSTEMS FOR ITS ATM-BASED ACCESS

NETWORK
An
executive conference examining next generation
architectures for the access network will be held 21-22
September at the Kensington Hilton
hotel in London. The conference will
discuss whether the growth of IP traffic renders the ATM
layer obsolete, how network layering will enable
effective voice/video/data delivery, and how IP over SDH
will evolve. Additional topics include the role of
ATM in Full Service Access Networks (FSANs) and the role
of IP and WDM in the access network. Speakers
will include chief technologists and senior network
engineers from Bell Canada, Telenor, GTE Labs, Chronos
Technology, ADC Telecommunications, Formus
Communications, Alcatel Optics, Ciena, Sorrento
Networks, Marconi, Intel and others. The
