COLT TELECOM TO IMPLEMENT USAGE-BASED IP BILLING
COLT Telecom plc licensed XACCT Technologies' usage based IP billing platform for deployment throughout its network.  COLT plans full implementation before the end of 2000 in nine European countries as well as at its peering point in New York.  The companies said that the system would interface with COLT's customer and interconnect billing systems as well as its management control and Business Support System (BSS) platforms.

XACCT, August 15, 2000

  • COLT currently operates in 20 European cities in 9 countries and plans to be in 27 cities by the end of 2000.  As of March 31, COLT had installed 2,075 route km of fiber in its city-networks. In May, COLT named Cisco Systems as its preferred IP equipment supplier for its European networks.
  • Last week, XACCT announced that Genuity would deploy its system to create usage-based pricing models for IP services over its Cisco backbone.
  • Broadwing Communications is also adopting XACCT’s system to collect the customer IP usage data from multiple network elements, such as routers, switches, firewalls, and application servers.  The data will be used for pricing its new virtual private network (VPN) service.
  • XACCT’s multi-source, multi-layer architecture enables it to extract information from multiple network devices and from all layers of the network - from physical layer to the application layer, in real time.  The data is then synthesized or eXtensible Detail Records, similar to the Call Detail Records (CDRs) generated by telco switches.

NORTEL NETWORKS TO ACQUIRE SONOMA SYSTEMS FOR ITS ATM-BASED ACCESS
Nortel Networks will acquire Sonoma Systems, a developer of ATM-based integrated access devices, for up to US$540 million in stock, a portion of which is dependent on certain revenue objectives.  Sonoma Systems offers Carrier-Class Broadband Integrated Access Devices supporting Class of Service guarantees for business-class Internet Access, voice, high-speed data and Frame Relay using ATM backbone networks.  Nortel Networks already had an OEM relationship with Sonoma Systems.  Nortel Networks said the Sonoma Systems products also integrate as an edge device with its OPTera- Metro solutions.  The company is based in Marina del Rey, California with a technology center located in Marlborough, Massachusetts.   http://www.sonoma-systems.com

  • Sonoma Systems filed SEC papers in February for a pending IPO.  The company was spun-off from Retix in January 1998 with new funding from Lazard Venture Partners, Crosspoint Venture Partners, VantagePoint Venture Partners and others. (Retix then merged into Vertel, its subsidiary, to focus on network management software).

ALLAYER INTRODUCES ITS 10 GIGABIT ETHERNET PROCESSOR
Allayer Communications began sampling a 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching processor designed for connecting LANs to Internet backbones via OC-192 optical links.  The device will integrate a 10-Gigabit port with 12 ports for 1 Gbps Ethernet operating at full-duplex, wire speed for an aggregated bandwidth of 44 Gbps.  Allayer will support IP Layer 2-7 functions, Quality-of-Service and trunking capabilities. http://www.allayer.com/pressrel000814A.html
Allayer Communications, August 15, 2000

  • Separately, Allayer Communications raised an additional $12.4 million in funding from several corporate investors.  Allayer Communications, which was founded in 1997, supplies a range of silicon devices for Ethernet switches and fiber optic systems.  The company is led by Dr. Cheng-chung Shih (formerly with Allied Telesyn) and is based in San Jose, California.

GLOBALCENTER TO HOST ORACLE APPLICATION SERVICES
Global Crossing's GlobalCenter unit entered into a strategic partnership with Oracle to host application services targeted at the media and entertainment and financial services industries.   The arrangement makes GlobalCenter an Oracle Authorized Applications Provider partner, allowing it to host, develop and sell value-added services based on the Oracle E-Business Suite.  http://www.globalcenter.net
