WORLD WIDE PACKETS LAUNCHES BETA TEST OF GIGABIT ETHERNET SUBSCRIBER GATEWAY
World Wide Packets, a start-up based in Spokane, Washington, disclosed plans for its Gigabit Ethernet subscriber gateway, a consumer device designed for gigabit speed residential access over fiber networks.  Beta testing is underway by the Grant County Washington Public Utility District (PUD) connecting nearly 100 residential sites in Ephrata, Washington.  The service will use a "fiber to the subscriber" model.  Technical details were not disclosed.  Worldwide Packets said it expects a commercial launch by early next year.  http://www.worldwidepackets.com/wwp-news-press-ethernet.html

  • World Wide Packets is led by Bernard Daines, the former founder of Packet Engines (acquired by Alcatel in 1998), Grand Junction Networks (acquired by Cisco in 1995) and Tidewater Associates.  The company recently closed a $20 million, founders' round of venture funding.  World Wide Packets is an active participant in the 10 Gigabit Ethernet alliance.

BROADCOM TO ACQUIRE SILICON SPICE FOR ITS GATEWAY PROCESSOR
Broadcom will acquire Silicon Spice, a start-up developing a network processor for gateway devices, for 5.0 million BRCM shares ($1.2 billion, August 7 prices).  Silicon Spice is working on processors for gateway and access devices offering Any-Service-Any-Port (ASAP) flexibility over IP and ATM networks.  Its silicon designs will feature a unique signal processing architecture, reconfigurable adaptive instruction sets, hierarchical DSP multi-processing, and a hybrid RISC/DSP core.  Broadcom said the acquisition would enable it to provide the highest density packet telephony silicon and software.  No products have been announced to date.  Silicon Spice is headquartered in Mountain View, California.  http://www.broadcom.com/  http://www.silicon-spice.com

LARA NETWORKS ACQUIRES WARPCOM FOR 1 GBPS AND 10 GBPS ETHERNET SWITCHING
Lara Networks, a start-up developing network application processors for accelerating high-end routers, has acquired WarpCom Technologies, a start-up specializing in high performance Ethernet switching.  Initial products will support IP over 1Gbps and 10 Gbps Ethernet.  Lara's current product portfolio consists of a set of Network Database Search Engines, subsystems and co-processors.  The Search Engines, which are built with IBM's 0.18 micron copper process technology, can scour silicon-based routing tables at speeds exceeding 80 million look-ups per second and can house tables holding one million addresses.  Financial terms were not disclosed. INTEL INTRODUCES CARRIER CLASS ETHERNET TRANSCEIVERS
Intel introduced a line of "Carrier Class" Ethernet transceivers designed to operate in an extended temperature range (from -40 degrees Celsius to 85 degrees Celsius) and able to compensate for noisy environments and sub-standard equipment that may already be installed in the network.  The devices include a new single-port 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit-over-copper Ethernet Transceiver; a new eight-port 10/100 BASE-TX Ethernet transceiver; a new single-port 10/100 BASE-TX Ethernet transceiver; a 10 BASE-T Ethernet transceiver.  http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/fe080700.htm

GLOBAL CROSSING ENHANCES ITS TRANSATLANTIC SERVICE WITH 622 MBPS ATM
Global Crossing expanded its existing transatlantic ATM and Frame Relay services to include transport speeds up to STM-4 (622 Mbps).  The network connects the company's North American backbone to 6 European countries using its undersea fiber.  Global Crossing's new service level agreement (SLA) for both the Global ATM and Frame Relay include a network availability guarantee of 99.9% and 4 hours mean time to repair.  http://www.globalcrossing.com/pressreleases/pr_080700.htm

TELE DANMARK SELECTS TELLABS' NEXT-GENERATION DWDM PLATFORM
Tele Danmark selected Tellabs' next generation FOCUS 6200 DWDM system for deployment in its pan-European backbone covering Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.  Financial terms were not disclosed. Tele Danmark is also installing Tellabs' FOCUS AC4 SDH system.

ALCATEL'S INSTALLED DSL BASE REACHES 3.5 MILLION LINES
Alcatel shipped a record 1.1 million central office ADSL lines worldwide during Q2, bringing its installed base among all its customers to over 3.5 million lines. The figures include the first DSL lines deployed in the new Alcatel Litespan Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) in addition to traditional DSLAM line shipments.  Alcatel said its Q2 shipments were 300% over the same period last year and 50% ahead of Q1 2000.  The company also shipped 325,000 ADSL customer premise modems during Q2.  http://www.alcatel.com/vpr/index.htm?body=/latestnews/07082000uk

OPENDSL INITIATIVE AIMS FOR INTEROPERABLE MODEMS
Leading DSL equipment vendors announced a new OpenDSL Industry Initiative to promote industry-wide acceptance and standardization of an open software specification that will automate the configuration of customer premise equipment (CPE) and network elements.  The vendors will also press for interoperability between multi-vendor DSL modems and routers.

VERIZON ACQUIRES ONEPOINT FOR IN-BUILDING DSL NETWORKS
Verizon will acquire Chicago-based OnePoint Communications, a start-up service provider targeting apartment communities, for an undisclosed sum.  Verizon said OnePoint's relationship with real estate developers would give it entree to prime apartment/condominium properties.  OnePoint's service areas include Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Georgia, Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina and the District of Columbia.  http://www.verizon.com/
