CISCO
TO ACQUIRE NUSPEED INTERNET SYSTEMS FOR IP-ENABLED SANs
Cisco Systems will
acquire NuSpeed Internet Systems, a start-up developing IP-enable
storage area networking technology, for approximately $450 million
in stock. Cisco said
the NuSpeed technology would enable it to offer a solution to
converge data and storage networks into one infrastructure.
The company has 56 employees and is based in Maple Grove,
Minnesota.

SHAW
CREATES BIG PIPE INC. FOR TRANS-CANADA BACKBONE
Shaw Communications,
which serves 1.8 million cable customers in Cancada, will create a
new company to provide a national fiber backbone for its broadband
Internet services. Big
Pipe Inc. will operate a fiber network with connectivity to all
the major Internet peering points in Canada and the US.

FIBERNET
EXTENDS $200 MILLION METRO DWDM CONTRACT WITH NORTEL NETWORKS
FiberNet Telecom Group,
which is building metro optical networks in New York City and
Chicago, awarded a US$200 million contract extension to Nortel
Networks. FiberNet
will deploy the Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 3500 and 5200
Multi-service Platforms, Nortel Networks Preside network
management and professional services.
In addition to the city network, FiberNet negotiates with
office building owners to deploy fiber directly to the telephone
closet on each of the office floors, thereby extending its SONET
infrastructure to the customer.
A US$60 million supply contract with Nortel was announced

FiberNet
Telecom Group activated the first segments of its NYC
network in November 1999 using diversely routed OC-48 SONET
rings. It
targets Class A office complexes, such as The Chrysler
building in mid-town Manhattan.
FiberNet is pursuing a carrier's carrier marketing
strategy. Earlier
this month, FiberNet closed a $20 million private placement
of 8% convertible preferred stock at a price of $10 per
share with Nortel Networks.

BROADSTREET
SELECTS LUCENT TO BUILD INTEGRATED DSL NETWORKS IN 16 US CITIES
BroadStreet
Communications, a start-up service provider, signed a $120 million
agreement under which Lucent Technologies will help it build an
integrated voice/data DSL network serving 16 US cities.
The network will use Lucent's PacketStar
Multiservice Media Gateways, CBX-500 Multiservice ATM switches,
Stinger DSLAMs, PathStar access servers and AccessPoint routers.
BroadStreet will also be among the first to deploy Lucent's
Integrated Access Devices (IADs) for consolidating voice and data
traffic at the customer premise.

NOKIA
ESTIMATES GLOBAL MOBILE PHONE USERS AT 570 MILLION
As of the end of June,
Nokia estimates that the number of mobile phone users worldwide
rose to 570 million. The
company projects the number of mobile phone users will surpass one
billion before the end of 2002.
In its quarterly financial report, Nokia warned that its
profitability is likely to decline in the coming the quarter, due
to seasonality and product transition issues to more advanced,
Internet-ready mobile handsets.
